NFL 2021: The Week 18 (!!!) thread

SF at Dallas, 430 Sunday, CBS. Just like old times.

Boo indeed.

Must have been a lot of stress on that kicker, knowing that if he missed the Raiders would still go to the playoffs.

Bah.

Bah.

He was probably more worried about not breaking his never-missed-in-Vegas streak.

It's also the Nickelodeon game. "Garopalo's been sacked again! And here comes the slime! Now a sneak preview of the next episode of the Spongebob prequel!"

I didn't see the Draw Play comic on Madden until right now, but shout out to Dave for having it mention Allan Hancock College, the junior college right here in Santa Maria. Madden's first coaching job.

I'll comment on the Niners fans filling SoFi stadium every time, but the stakes of this game made it something else. I commented to my wife while watching the game, "I can't remember the last time I heard a crowd be that loud to the home team's pre-snap offense".

Wow, what a game last night. Sucks to be me for going to bed early not because I didn't think the game was going to be good (it was interesting through halftime) but because I am old and could barely keep my eyes open.

Also: Watching the Panthers this season was exhausting. I'm glad that's over.

Anyway, a heads up: Let's all celebrate Black Monday here (FireRhuleFireRhulePleaseFireRhule), and then I'll post a short playoffs thread this evening.

So, Jags get to trade out of the 1st overall pick, eh? To the Panthers maybe? It won't take much to make Tepper fall in love with a QB.

Giants and Jets both have top 10 picks. They should maybe focus on OL and WRs, assuming the G Men don't try for a new QB already.

Jags are really setup to make mock drafts really f-ing tough to mock up. Gonna be fun!

Wow, Mike Zimmer is gone. (And their GM.)

Matt Nagy too, but that was expected.

Black Monday! Off with their heads!!!

Also, the worst thing about last night not ending in the greatest and most mutually beneficial tie for both teams is now I have to listen to my in-law Steeler fans gloat about backing into the playoffs.

Ooooooooooooooooh snap, Ryan Pace is finally fired! That guy did nothing in the draft outside of pickup a couple good RBs in later rounds. Talk about terrible top 10 picks year in, year out. He'll probably got to Jacksonville now.

Brian Flores also out in Miami.

Is there someone in the draft worth trading up for? I honestly don't know who The Guy is in the 2022 draft.

Nagy + Zimmer supposedly gone.

It was a good run. I'm confident tho that both teams will manage to hire equally average coaches.

Anyone who had Brian Flores in the Black Monday pool, collect your winnings.

I didn't see that one coming.

Edit: Panthers Twitter is ON FIRE with the prospect of Flores coming to Charlotte.

Meanwhile, there are six teams with HC vacancies: Bears, Broncos, Dolphins, Jaguars (interim), Raiders (interim) and Vikings.

As a coordinator, or as a Rhule replacement?

Rhule replacement. Which won't happen, sadly.

I wouldn't think he's a coordinator candidate. Flores is a defensive guy, and Phil Snow seems to have a lock on the job despite how poorly the D has played over the past month or so.

Usually. There isn't a locked-in-gotta-get guy yet, but it'll happen.

Otherwise the Jags will end up taking an OT 1st overall.

Actually, won't it be that DE from Michigan, Aiden Hutchenson?

Edit: Think they will try to lure Harbaugh out of UM?

No, I don't think you have to worry about Trent Baalke trying to hire Jim Harbaugh.

I thought Harbaugh was going to the Raiders?

And does the Miami job seem intriguing?

Pro: The team fights like hell. They had no business winning 9 games.

Con: The QB situation is week, and there doesn't seem to be much talent.

As it stands right now, the two premiere edge rushers, Hutchinson and Oregon's Thibodeaux, are considered the top two prospects, with Alabama OT Evan Neal in the tier beneath them.

I'd like the Jags to be able to trade down a couple spots and pick up Neal. At least, that's my position right now before I dive into watching video and making my draft list.

Here's a fantastic twitter thread: NFL Quarterbacks and what kind guy they seem like.

Some highlights:

Jimmy Garoppolo is on house arrest awaiting trial real estate fraud but still posts daily “rise and grind” stories on Instagram
Andy Dalton is your best friend’s ex boyfriend who reads at a 7th grade level but is a millionaire because he was an early investor in Top Golf with money he got from a settlement from getting run over by a zamboni when he was 16.
Aaron Rodgers is the manager at a local brewery and shares custody of a 3-year-old boy named Dash with his ex-girlfriend he met back when she was a bartender there. He is currently dating one of the bartenders there.
Ben Roethlisberger seems like a guy who has been credibly accused of sexual assault on multiple occasions but got away with it due to his employers turning a blind eye and his PR team carefully engineering a born again Christian persona oh wait

Panthers re-sign PJ Walker.

Sure, you can't let QBs with a 51 career passer rating just walk, you gotta lock that down.

Apparently the Giants brain trust has yet to meet with Judge.

Literally the least surprising Panthers free-agent signing ever (bc Temple).

I'm actually kinda surprised they didn't re-sign Haason Reddick first (also Temple).

The Miami job involves a terrible owner, a GM who has been allowed to be bad at a number of jobs within the organization for a couple decades, and they just fired a coach who finished the season 8-1 after a disastrous 1-7 start. I think the Miami job is in the Jacksonville "oh God, please somebody work here" category at this point. Bad owner, bad legacy GM looking for a fall guy, uh . . . good weather?

The Flores move was a big surprise. Points made above as to why. Wow, how can people like that be canned and others like Judge remain if this is the case?
