NFL 2021: The Week 18 (!!!) thread

The NFL does not like DBs already so this is never going to change. It is more "exciting" to get a DPI than a well-played pass defense. /sarcasm

They already made PI reviewable. But then they never overturn it. Seems like they will be too dumb to fix this one too.

It's the Lions though.

3rd Person is an immediate red flag..

Can we talk about one of the most bullsh*t recurring plays in football?

I'm talking about the "pass interference due to the wide receiver suddenly hitting the brakes to go after an underthrown ball" play.

I feel like there needs to be an exception to pass interference rules carved out for this. The response is always "well the DB just needs to turn his head and play the ball", but with downfield contact rules so emphasized, defenders have to watch and follow the receiver's body, because they can't wait until the ball is thrown to start covering a guy. With athletic QBs extending plays, one wrong-timed head turn and the WR changes direction and bolts towards empty space.

Sh*tty QB throws should not result in an advantaged play for the offense. Contact created from receivers abruptly stopping their route should be excluded from penalty.

100%.. They gotta stop rewarding this play.. the DB can't possibly cover the WR AND look back at the QB... so the whole somehow magically sense the ball is underthrown to instantly stop and turn to avoid the WR who now is running into you is 99% BS.

This is too funny.

The Bears are offering minimum wage to ex-players to be assistant coaches.

These players made millions of dollars a year and then they come at them with $15/hour offers as if that'll get them off the couch. Sad.

Panthers plan to keep Matt Rhule next season.

Get ready for more "run the ball all the time" stuff when you have no QB, a crap offensive line, and a great RB who is getting more breakable every years.

FTFY

Also, Matt Rhule is a lying sack of sh!t. You probably should have mentioned that, too.

I've lived through some bad Panthers seasons, but this is the first time I've felt like there was no chance they'd be better the next season.

I feel like the Browns have entered one of those storm clouds of rumors where I will just stop believing anything and wait to see what happens. Obviously much easier to do when you're not a fan of that team.

Speaking of rumors, there's rumors that the Vikings will fire Zimmer. This would make Matt LaFleur the longest tenured head coach in the NFC North.

Also, it looks like the Giants will play the WTFs with 51 players because they're out of cap space. Yikes.

The level of concern and urgency the Broncos offensive line feels towards protecting Drew Lock is truly touching:

Well, by the looks of the play that just flipped the game, they don't care for their RBs either.

In preparation for next football season, I have placed my jersey orders, one for each of the two Trents.

By which, of course, I mean Trent Williams and Trent Dilfer.

One of those knockoff jersey stores on DHgate had the 1990s Fresno State pattern! If the Dilfer jersey shows up looking good, I am definitely doing a Lorenzo Neal and a Marquez Pope.

Minshew starts for the birds tonight.

First drive: 13 plays, 75 yards, TD on a 3 yard pass.

If Mike Glennon were a Lego Star Wars toy ...

What will it take to get him on my team? I can offer Baker and a second, and maybe some OJ?

Fresh squeezed, or concentrate?

I hadn't realized Tyree Jackson converted from QB to TE. Broadcast kept mentioning his name as catching passes and it was throwing me through a loop. Turns out, yup, same guy. I guess it makes sense, since he was huge for a QB.

Apparently he was in the XFL last year, still as a QB, but Philly signed him after the XFL and started the conversion to TE. Guess it's going OK for him.

Apparently that first TD was his first NFL catch. He also injured his knee on a punt play.

How things are going in Carolina:

* Panthers fire OC Joe Brady because the offense (never mind who picked the non-Cam QBs) stinks.

* Panthers promote to interim OC Jeff Nixon, the team's RB coach and "senior offensive assistant" (translated: he has known HC Matt Rhule since high school, no kidding)

* Carolina announces they're looking for a new OC. Candidates include a college OC who's looking for his second HC job, a former HC who thinks the racist name of his former team should have never been changed, and a guy who has been an OC for three seasons but doesn't actually call any plays.

* Panthers announce, welp, we did a national search and it turns out the best candidate (Jeff Nixon, durr) was in our building the entire time.

Too cynical? I'm thinking not.

Browns plan to move forward with Baker as QB.

Thought I'd just put it here so we could re-use the same picture. More efficient that way.

Why couldn't they have done this last year, when the Niners needed a DC?

DeMeco Ryans has done too well to lose his job, but man would I want Fangio. Shanahan wanted him when he first got to SF.

Still have nightmares about Watson in the orange and brown next season

Keeping Baker for the final year of his deal isn't really what I would call "moving forward" with him.

If they signed him to a contract extension, that would be a different story.

It's just PR leak that they're not cutting him. Which they shouldn't. Until they have someone else in place to start.

Trevor Lawrence 19-of-25 for 208 yards and 1 TD at half.

And of the 6 incompletions, one was a dropped TD right before half, one was a deep sideline throw that was also dropped, and one was a back of endzone throw that Jones caught but couldn't get his feet in.

This is the first half of football where Jaguar Jesus has looked like the guy on his college tape. He's come a bit more alive each week since Urban got chased out of the building. What a waste of a season. Get a real coach in here.

I'm pulling for the Jags this week bc of the MAXIMUM CHAOS factor. If the Colts lose, we could get a Chargers-Raiders Kneeldown Bowl. (A tie means both teams go to the playoffs.)

Make it happen, Jags!
