Playstation 5 Catch-All

Hmm, I seem to be the only person who actually likes the PS5 interface. Other than a couple weeks of adjusting to the fact that press vs hold function of the PS button is basically reversed this time around, I found it very intuitive.

I like it. I never cared about unique themes myself and like how it switches to the game you have highlighted. An improvement over PS4 IMHO.

May end up having to send my week old PS5 in for repair. Instead of waking or turning on it will flash a blue light. I’ve tried a number of things and it will work for a day or so and then do it again. Tonight I reset it and reinstalled the system software. Thankfully my saves were all backed up. If it happens again then I’ll probably be contacting Sony.

I contacted support on 11/29 but still waiting on the box to send the console to them. I got the blue light even when it attempted to restart during the recent system update.

A lot of stories about bad experiences with Sony support out there. I could live without Rest Mode but I am concerned it means there’s an actual hardware issue.

Ultimately, it’s my decision, of course, but I’d love to hear what others might do to in my situation. Send in the console, assuming the box ever shows up, or hang onto it and just not use Rest Mode? Given mixed stories about Sony support and the fact that it’s under warranty until next November.

I couldn't play without rest mode. Especially a game like Returnal, you actually couldn't play it properly without rest mode before the recent patch.

I never use rest mode. I have two controllers to swap and I'm never desperate to play a game the second I buy it, so even charging and downloading is left when I have it on and I'm using it.

But even if I was in your position, I would definitely send it in. Not being able to properly exit rest mode or even restart after updates could very much mean there's a hardware issue that's a ticking time bomb somewhere inside there.

I always use rest mode. Even if I didn't the fact that there seems to be a problem with rest mode on your console points to an issue that would likely manifest in other ways down the line. Absolutely send it in.

Thanks, folks! Yeah, I think I already knew I should send it in and just needed to accept it. It helps to hear others say it.

A little frustrated with the way this process has started. I called support again and it turns out a box was never sent and that I WILL get a tracking for it. That’s the exact opposite of what I was told last time. But ultimately this is what needs to be done and I can’t complain when many people still haven’t been able to get a system.

Hopefully the rest of the repair process will go better.

You either mistyped, or have USB Type A and Type C confused. Type A is the larger, irreversible rectangular plug; Type C is the smaller rounded rectangle that works regardless of which side is up. PS4 only had Type A ports (two in the front for the base, the Pro added an additional Type A port in the back).

I already have this Anker 4-port USB 3.0 hub plugged into one of the Type A USB ports on the back; if I didn't, between PSVR, a bluetooth transmitter for my non-Sony headphones, and an external drive I'd already have maxed out all the Type A ports.

Hi,

Yes, you're right; I got my As and Cs confused.

I can never keep micro- and mini-USB straight, and because I'm a certified cheap bastard who never upgrades his technology until it breaks, I have a plethora of both around the house.

Did the latest update break the YouTube app for anyone else, or is it just me?

Three new (IMO unappealing) Dualsense colors coming and console covers/faceplates matching these and the existing controller colors.

I’m interested in a boring black console but the big question is price. I can easily see these costing more than I’m willing to spend.

Preorders open in USA: https://direct.playstation.com/en-us...

$55 for the covers. $75 for the new color controllers.

I'm really thinking about getting the black covers. The white sticks out pretty badly in my setup. Although it does match the PSVR headset... Meh, I'd prefer all black.

They are just ugly. Why can't they do a design lab like MS?

Kinda expected they’d be around $50… and I think that might be more than I’m willing to pay.

I do like my red Dualsense but don't think I want a console to match.

And on Etsy you can get a custom one for a lot cheaper

$20

Although perhaps not better looking

For $20 I assume that is just a stick to slap on your controller.

There are plenty of websites to get custom PS5 controllers anyhow, although the price ramps up quickly.

Systems online at Walmart at 3pm Eastern today about 90 minutes from now

Today I started playing Kena Bridge of Spirts, which is a beautiful game.

My gaming time has been limited the past few days, but I have been able to put a few more hours into Kena. The combat can be challenging, but if you fail an encounter, you respawn close to it, so it's not too punishing. After you get a bow, the game presents an area where you can explore and do some combat, traversal, and puzzles in whatever order you wish and that was a lot of fun tonight. I have gotten stuck in a few areas, since they don't give too many hints regarding puzzles. My advice is to just look around everywhere.

I've reached the second area, like ccesarano, and the combat is proving to be a bit too difficult for what I want out of this game, so I dropped it to "story mode." The final straw was an area where the challenge was that it was super cramped, and thus situational awareness was really low. It just did not feel satisfying to beat hose encounters, and I'm glad I could drop down the difficulty.

I also noticed that to get a Platinum on the game, you have to beat it on an unlocked difficulty level. No thanks.

I'm just about to do that myself ("Stone Guardian" boss). I'm glad I started on "Normal" to build some skill and get challenged early on, but there are some big difficulty spikes. It does feel a little unfair when you're getting hit from behind because of low awareness, and you can't cancel out of many animations to block or dodge.

Despite how it looks, this is not a casual kiddie game! Even on a low difficulty level, some of the puzzles are going to be challenging for young players.

But, I'll give them credit, they shot for the moon with a complex combat system. As others have said, they've proven they can make something gorgeous and interesting and fun, if a little imperfect. I'm very excited to see their next project.

Even I'm getting frustrated at points, though. My playthrough is going slow, but I just reached the Vine Knight and he has one grabber attack in particular that is just frustrating the crap out of me. In addition, despite having increased my health bar a decent amount, each of these boss types leaves me feeling as if there's been no change. It really does result in some crazy difficulty spikes, leaving it one of the most uneven feeling games I've played since Dragon Age: Origins.

It's still good when it works, and there's much to like with managing the battlefield and your rot powers. In addition, I'm probably relying too much on dodge and not enough on the block/parry mechanic (though given how many of those grabs Kena looks to have successfully dodged only to be snagged I guess by her pinky toe, begging questions of who handled the I-Frames and hit boxes in this game, I still feel like I should be getting by fine but instead am not). I know the first zone boss ended up having a powerful attack that you could stop mid-charge, but I didn't discover it until the very end of the fight. As such, I'm wondering if there's something similar going on here, but it's just not being communicated clearly enough.

I plan to beat this over the next week, and I'm definitely enjoying it, but it's just filled with so many little things that leave me feeling less satisfied with the combat's spit-shine polish. I think I said it before, but I feel like Kena is more difficult than it is "supposed" to be in that it feels less precise and polished in the areas most players won't really notice.

I finally got a PS5! So happy.

So far:
- Astro's Playroom seems fine but unplayable for me without invert camera option
- transformative for Kingdoms of Amalur as the load times are now bearable
- STILL takes forever to load XCOM2, I guess there are limits to what it can do

Same. And good news, you can set default controls for the system and it will apply to Astro even though you can't change in game. It's nice!

Oh, thanks so much! I'm still finding my way around the UI.

ComfortZone wrote:

I've had it for like 9 months and I am still trying to figure out the UI. But it seems to work well for lots of others. So I am just a very slow learner.

Newegg shuffle has PS5 plus controller bundle today. Pretty reasonable as bundles go, if you can get chosen. Good luck.

GameStop bundles in select stores Dec 23. Last chance this year maybe.

Got an email from SQenix that says you can get the PS5 FF7 upgrade for free starting today, through Jan 6. Maybe it's not active in the store yet though because it's not working for me?

Fine print says even if you claimed the original from PS+ in March you can now get the free upgrade. So that's me. But at least the app still just says "add to wishlist" and has no "buy" or "add to library" button.

Same it seems to work for some. I assume I'll check it in a day or two and see if I can nab it then.

I hope there’s a way to redeem without the console because my system is at one of Sony’s repair centers.

I only tried on the PS App on my phone. Don't usually have the console while the kids are awake.

Nothing about it says it is a limited time deal so I'm sure you can just do it whenever you get it back a long as your Plus subscription is still active.
