Oh that. I remember now. There are
two
additional areas that are collectively known by that name I think, which is why it didn't click at first.
Have you found the place where you would use the information you were looking for?
I think you've probably learned what was supposed to be inside that panel you found, back when you were trying to get through that painting/door in the tower. What you saw in "matrix view" was the digital signature of it having been destroyed. It's up to you to work out how to get past the corresponding lock without that information.
I'll offer some general advice about this stage of the game:
You're essentially inside the Strangers' video game. The supernova has you on a time limit. So you've got to work out the speedrun glitches to get through it in time. (You will not actually be that pressed for time if you navigate correctly.)
To break this up a bit (I'm playing, then writing a bit) I've now
Spoiler:got right into the building in the shrouded forest, after following the creature under the tunnel. I'm in the room, there's loads of the creatures there, the door locks behind me & I've no idea what to do. I've tried staring at them, concealed my flame on the artifact, shined my light on them, I've looked for a teleportation statue that might be upstairs in the room but I've had no joy. Am I missing something? I know I've to walk through the lit fireplace to get to the forbidden archives of the Shrouded Forest but the creature is right there as I tried to run past it & got grabbed, my flame getting blew out.
What you are missing... is time.
Have you ever been in the simulation and gotten booted out because of something that happened in the real world? If so, that should give you a clue as to how to get through "the party house" (the developers called it that in an interview).
Regarding the place where I'm looking the information for
Spoiler:do you mean the 3 areas that you need the correct symbol order for in the secret world of the submerged structure?
Yes. You will learn what you need to learn to get through that, though that knowledge does not take the obvious form.
It's hard to keep track of where I've seen certain reels, gained the various pieces of knowledge etc. I've only recorded the last 3-4 reels on my PS5 so I can go back & watch them to work out exact locations of the stuff I'm looking for.
On the
Spoiler:panel, I think I remember seeing a slide of that getting destroyed, but it was hours before I actually got to that point so I'd forgotten about it. When you say corresponding lock, you don't mean that it's in the forbidden archives near that panel? Are you talking about the ones in the submerged structure that I talked about in the earlier spoiler block of this post?
Yes.
Oh yeah in regarding your last spoiler block, it seems you can go by
Spoiler:raft in the shrouded forest to all the other locations, I found that out in the last 30 mins or so. I'm guessing you need to do a task in the shrouded forest, jump on the raft, go to the endless canyon do something there, eventually getting to the submerged structure at the end of the secret world to finish of a chain of events.
Oh, that's rather important. And relevant to the question I asked in my first spoiler block. That was basically the first thing I learned how to do in there, so it didn't actually occur to me that you might not have found that. It's amazing to me how this game can have such a tight knot of puzzles and mystery and still have so much room for different paths through.
Thanks again for the help Vargen :)
You're very welcome. I haven't yet figured out how to wipe my brain so I can play this again myself, and helping other people with their journey is as close as I can get.
The one you're stuck on is one where I just had to Video Game my way past the obstacles. My general approach is in the spoiler. It's a little less subtle than my other hints.
Once I got down the spiral stairs I set the artifact down and scouted in Matrix mode. That let me get a good look at how many Strangers there are and their default patrol patterns. And get a good look at the terrain to know what my obstacles were. From there I was able to pick a line. Then it was a matter of watching an antler silhouette pass back and forth in front of a light in order to time my run.
Spoiler:I've no idea how to get to the point where you can extinguish the other two lights on the big casket.
You already know how to do what you need to do for one of those.
I actually got down to the
Spoiler:Starlit Coves - Forbidden Archives by going into the Matrix Mode to scout it out last night. I went in from the tower at the Cinder Isles to Starlit Cove, conjured the lower part of the tower into existence with the little pier for the raft. I then jumped in the water to go back to the ritual room, took the raft to the Hidden Gorge & went to Endless Canyon. I knew at some point late in the loop the creatures would be taken out of the Starlit Cove as the tower in the Cinder Isles eventually falls over & the ritual room is submerged with water. I was down the spiral staircase with the two patrolling creatures when this happened, I got to go down into the Archives where there were three reels to look at. I only got through two of them before the loop ended. I'll need to go back & just time running down the long stairway past them both much earlier in the loop.
Yeah, I tried that approach at first myself, but didn't have enough time to see much.
In reference to the second bit are you talking about the
Spoiler:segmented platforms that show up in Matrix Mode for the first puzzle block section that would be on your left if you were to enter through the submerged structures ritual room? Or the bridge with the eye sentry with the light shining down on it?
I was referring to the first one.
Hey have you ever watched a speed run of the base game? It's pretty wild. It starts out about like you'd expect. They parkour up to the museum and hit the statue ASAP, then yeet themselves off the cliff because dying is the fastest way back to the launch pad. Then they wake up, take a couple steps forward, and kill themselves by standing in the fire . Apparently the game doesn't unlock the ability to sleep until you've died twice, and they need that to line the planets up right.
Anyway...
About the bit with the bridges
that you can see while in Matrix mode, the fact that you can see the bridge sections means you're very close. If you did have the combination for that bit, what do you think it would do?
I might have been a bit too clever with my "tangent" about the speed run...
On the slide reel that you can't quite translate:
You've seen the physical forms of the Strangers that are walking around in the simulation. Do they look alive to you?
And a bit more if you feel the need:
Do they wake up when the bells ring? They're lying right there beside you when you wake up.
On the codes:
You don't need to know them. You do need to interact with one of the code input cylinders. Just make sure you can see what they're doing.
Oh jeez I just looked at my first spoiler block & have answered the last spoiler blocks question I was asking. Still though
Spoiler:to make the jump of seeing an older stranger die beside the flame in the ritual room & getting drawn into the simulation to you actually having to step into the flame to die wasn't that apparent to me. My mind was connecting that with him/her being too old/sick & it give them life.
I'd actually like to hear some others input on the above if anyone else who has completed the DLC wants to jump in & give feedback on how they found that particular part.
I had recently watched the speedrun I described, so when I saw the reel of
the Stranger being uploaded at the moment of death, I thought to myself "I know how to die in that room. I'll try that."
I brought it up to try and give the same context that got me to the solution. That said, I can see how it might not look like that would work. According to my interpretation of the reels
the reason why sleeping and meditation take you into the simulation is because it calms your brainwaves and lets the system get a good read. It's easy to see how dying of old age would lead to a similarly compatible pattern of brainwaves. Burning to death... kind of the opposite of the calm and peaceful that the system seems to want.
Was there anything that you actually had to look up yourself Vargen? just out of interest.
My wife was on the couch beside me the whole time, and between the two of us we didn't have to look up much. Having the two of us there gave us more patience for wandering around while trying to work out what to do next. My wife did look up
the location of the hole in the outside of the space station
because we were having trouble finding it with just the ship's headlights. I think she might have looked up a couple other things but didn't tell me.
Oh, and I think our play pattern helped. We did a bunch of ~1 hour sessions on consecutive nights. That made it easy for at least one of us to remember what we were doing and gave plenty of time for our subconscious to work.
Huh. There was a patch, and the notes are appropriately vague:
Outer Wilds Patch 12 is now available! For all of you who might want to play Echoes of the Eye during the holidays, we updated and polished portions of the expansion and fixed a number of bugs on all platforms. The patch may take a little longer to publish on XBOX but should go live shortly.

Most of those sound interesting. Not sure I'm a fan of "Made it more difficult to skip dark sequences by surviving certain falls" though. I definitely used that in one key location and I don't feel like it detracted from the game at all.
I'm curious to see what the level changes are.
Sorry if this has been discussed, I’m a filthy skimmer, but can anyone give me advice on how to get into this game. I’ve heard so many good things and want to experience it. I’ve started it once and had trouble with the initial lack of direction. I feel like if there something to give me a foothold and momentum, it would be smooth sailing after that. I’ve avoided looking for tips online because I want to avoid spoilers. Heard the less you know about the game the better. So any advice?
So any advice?
Hmm...
When you do the introduction and go talk to the folks at the museum, there's one person who asks you what you're going to do first. The available responses to that question are all pointers to things you can investigate. So I guess my advice is to answer that question honestly; pick something from that list that sounds good and follow that lead. From there your ship's computer will keep track of what you've found and how things are connected, so keep consulting that and try to fill in the gaps it shows you. You will be able to get to all of them so there's no FOMO to worry about with that choice.
Go find the astronaut on Giant's Deep before you get too far into your wanderings. Not necessarily right away, but definitely after an hour or two. They unlock a game mechanic that is pretty helpful, though not strictly necessary.
Finished the Echoes of the Eye the other day & only getting a chance to post now. I didn't realize I was so close to the end & that the last spoiler questions I was asking lead directly to the end part of the game.
Have you gone back and beaten the base game again? I hear getting to the end of the DLC will add some stuff there. I haven't managed it yet, as my skills are rusty. But for some reason I can't bring myself to just YouTube it either.
I was actually thinking about doing that. It's easy enough to get
Spoiler:the warp core & go straight to dark bramble
so I might give that a try fairly soon.
I haven't re-learned how to dodge the fish. I've been meaning to practice while my wife is at work, but baby minding keeps me distracted.
There's also the
Spoiler:Quantum Moon
ending that I never got around to.
Oh, that's worth doing. I might even remember it well enough to give hints.
I wonder what happens if you go see the post-Echoes ending without doing that.
Did you see the secret
Spoiler:music room
in EOTY Vargen? it's well extremely hidden but a really fun Easter egg. I watched it on YouTube.
I think so. We had to turn on the "Reduce Scares" option to sneak past a certain part and found an easter egg. The secret was neat but mostly I was relieved that it wasn't on the critical story path and I could still say I completed that without nerfing the challenge.
I really need to play this. Put the shortcut on my desktop to remind me and it sits there for months...
I picked this back up again today after not being in a really good place to enjoy it in the fall when I first spun it up.
Remembered exactly the degree you need to find a certain something with a telescope. And immediately realized why I put this down last time again.
I need to play this in VR. So I'm going to try playing through the DLC in VR. Will report back on how successful that ends up being

Truly a black mark against your gaming credentials
Well I partially blame you. Message me when you're enjoying something because I'll probably like it too. I do you the same courtesy, mate.

You put this down?? Staygold, are you okay? *hug* Hope the VR is successful!!
Alright I finally started during kids nap today. Got 3 or 4 runs in. Hm...
Pretty sure I spent a lot longer than 20 minutes wandering around the village. That first run doesn't start until you launch maybe? Anyway, flew to the moon first, and then that led me to Brittle Hollow. Boy that planet is strange.
Found a few things, some Nomai text, and a couple astronauts. Intriguing.
Thinking about playing after the kids are asleep.
Remembered exactly the degree you need to find a certain something with a telescope. And immediately realized why I put this down last time again.
Wait, what? That sounds like it's important but I have no idea what you're talking about here.
Unless you're trying to find the DLC? If that's the case I can tell you how to do it without measuring the angle of anything.
Alright lost a few more hours last night and today to this one. Think I've now been to every planet once, no comet yet, and still I don't feel like I've solved anything. Spent a few runs on certain planets thinking I was close to... something... and still can't finish what I start.
This is a weird one. It's fun but frustrating. And I need some answers!
Don't want to get a guide. But I'm wondering if I should look up some more hints. Like for instance, the twin planets...
Knowing when x/y/z is covered/uncovered would be nice. I've discovered some things but been too late/early to access them.
Just minor annoyances, and I feel like I waste a run if I don't get a new entry about SOMETHING in my ship computer at least.
Oh sh*t... YOU ARE DEAD.
I knew I shouldn't have
taken out that warp core.
Still, that was a great run. Finally I understand the basics of what is causing this 22 minute loop. Now to figure out why...
the cannon is breaking, and if I can somehow stop/fix this...
