Well, it's out. Shall we reset the server and start afresh?

Just say the word and it shall be done.

I have always considered that more of a feature than a bug. It gives the worlds an otherworldly high fantasy feel IMHO.

Mr. Scott, the word is given.

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! You are about to enter another dimension. A dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. It is dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

GWJ's Vanilla Minecraft server has been updated to the brand-spankin'-new Minecraft Vanilla 1.18! Connection details are below. Please note that you will need to use Java/JDK 1.17 to run the client (downloads can be found here, here, or wherever fine JDKs are sold freely available).

Vanilla Minecraft
Version: 1.18 (using PaperMC on the server)
Server connection: GAME-USEAST-01.MTXSERV.COM:27240
Dynmap URL: http://147.135.27.4:27241/#

lol every time they tweak the terrain generation it’s like they specifically select the aspects that I find the most annoying and make them even more common and extreme. I miss the days when there weren’t massive impassible ravines everywhere or random holes every 10 steps that drop into insta-death pits or open pools of lava.

Am I seeing that map correctly and you guys just started a new server and are already mapping out the nether?

Pretty sure that's the old map.

Yeah, the map is slow to update, and it's out of my control.

Ok, whew. Makes me feel less like the worst MC player in the world.

Enjoy the new landscape!

I might come on and build bridges... lol I'd bet that will be a need.

Is it possible to change the view-distance on the server? 1.18 introduced a very short (10 chunks) render fog and the server overrides the client view render settings.

Awesome!

I was thinking about checking the new server out - are there any group goals on the server?

Be awesome and enjoy?

The same thing we do every night, Pinky. Try to take over the world!

Narf! Now I want to see a 300-block tall bust of P&TB.

Here's me, at Y=-15, standing in a huge cavern, staring down at another huge cavern. There are underground areas in the overworld that are so massive that it feels like being in the nether, except it's all pitch black.

The dynamic map still hasn't updated. There's slow and then there's a week behind slow.

I'll open a ticket.

I took a different approach, and installed the Dynmap Bukkit plugin myself, since we're running this as a PaperMC server. Our new, fully-controllable Dynmap is here

Excellent! Is enablesigns true for making sign markers?

I don't think it is, but I'll enable it this afternoon if it's not. Otherwise an OP can use the /dmap command to create map markers.

Nice! Thanks, Merphle!

Pixlriffs Survival Guide Season 2 has started up with the release of Caves and Cliffs. Here's the latest where he goes exploring in his new world.

He's done surviving the first night, getting iron and some basics of farming and herding already as well.

I've started a new world myself, but haven't gotten too far into it just yet. I did find a cave with an "overhang" that I followed down into a lush cave that lead to an abandoned mineshaft. But that's about it. I'm getting used to how huge Minecraft feels now - I mean, Minecraft worlds were huge before, but now it huge on top of huge on top of huge.

Big exploit that seems to impact Minecraft Java.

Word of the vulnerability first came to light on sites catering to users of Minecraft, the best-selling game of all time. The sites warned that hackers could execute malicious code on servers or clients running the Java version of Minecraft by manipulating log messages, including from things typed in chat messages. The picture became more dire still as Log4j was identified as the source of the vulnerability, and exploit code was discovered posted online.

Holy forking shirtballs! That is a sweet bug and a pen tester's wet dream.

Good thing real programmers don't log!

MS/mojang was quick to fix it on their end -- faster than the java people. Minecraft 1.18.1 closes the hole for Minecraft clients.

I'll update the server to 1.18.1 today.

Edit: Done.
