[Discussion] Mass Shootings - Yeah, we need a thread just for this...

This year is the deadliest year ever in terms of mass shootings. In a political climate of polarization, it becomes harder to suss out legitimate information from the misinformation propagated by those with political agendas. Complicating this more is the continual resistance of 2nd amendment advocates to allow for political talk surrounding these massacres. This will involve political discussion to see if there are ways we can all agree might be good ways to prevent mass shootings.

This discussion should involve the details of any current, or future mass shooting, and how they compare to past mass shootings. How are they the same? How are they different? Do gun laws have an impact? Does the race of the shooter affect how we treat them? What makes one a hate crime and one an act or terrorism? Are these shootings the price of freedom?

A 15-year-old shot up his Michigan high school. Three dead and six wounded.

The shooter had a semi-automatic pistol and multiple magazines.

The police arrested him without pumping him full of bullets so the odds are pretty good it's a White kid who somehow got hold of his parent's firearm.

Just seen this on my news feed. No details yet but I wonder with the chubby cheek murderer getting off on self defense can this guy claim self defense if he didn't start shooting until someone tried to stop him. He feared for his life because someone was going to take his gun and kill him.

They were BLM supporters that were trying to teach him CRT. That alone will pay for the best attorneys money can buy.

The pessimist in me knows that the TikToks kids are taking during school shootings are ultimately going to have as much impact on gun regulation as cell phone videos have had on police reform: not much and even then only for supremely egregious incidents.

Nothing will ever change on this issue.

My high school aged son texted my wife between classes that there are rumors of a potential shooting at his school today. Someone saw a text message stating that someone else was going to “shoot the school”. The school is investigating it. No lockdown, classes moving on as normal.

My hands are shaking as I type this while I sit here, completely f*cking worthless, jumping out of my skin worrying about the (probably nothing) situation.

This should not be normal. Kids should not drill for this. Parents should not have to worry about this. I shouldn’t be sitting here wondering if my last conversation with my son will be about him not taking out the trash when it’s full, and him asking to log into my steam account.

From the school:

We are aware of social media postings about rumored threats directed toward our school.

The police department and school administration have investigated, and it was determined that there is no credible threat against our school or any students. Out of an abundance of caution, police have shared with is that will have an additional presence this afternoon.

Parents, please help us reinforce the message that we will continue to share with our students about inappropriate messaging via text and other social media platforms. The police department and school division take online messaging very seriously. Students can be arrested and suspended/expelled from school for incidents that cause disruptions to the school day.

Please help us reinforce with your student the need for them to think about whether their message is appropriate before posting it.

Thank you for your continued partnership.

Words escape me.

Ah the old bomb threat because I didn't study American experience. You know where they are pretty sure nothing will happen...this country.....

We had one of those on 9/11. Somebody called in a threat to the business school. Not sure I was going to class anyway after the crazy morning.

A teacher at a local High School was arrested for 'discovering' and reporting notes threatening gun violence that they had written themselves. f*ck I hate people.

This school is like 15 minutes from where I grew up (and about a half hour from where I live currently). Multiple schools (not limited to junior or high schools) have been closed today due to possible threats. We've also seen everyone sharing the TikTok videos of the kids recording from inside the school, including one teacher who we know personally. Not sure how we feel about that, to be honest. On the one hand I guess it makes the situation more real for people that are not directly affected, but on the other it also seems gross to keep showing groups of scared kids running for their lives? If the videos somehow showed the shooter or could somehow be used as evidence to convict the kid then maybe it would be better somehow? Jesus even typing that out felt wrong. Sorry, this is mostly just a stream of consciousness post at this point

My wife and I are currently discussing whether to send our son into 3rd grade today--there was actually supposed to be an active shooter drill scheduled sometime this week too.

This was an e-mail we recieved at midnight last night:

Late last evening, we became aware of social media posts of accusations of a threat to high schools across Oakland County. While there is strong evidence that these are not credible threats, out of an abundance of caution, we will not be having school on Thursday, December 2, for our three high schools...

Tomorrow will give us the opportunity to work with law enforcement and discuss next steps for moving forward at our high schools. In the meantime, our police and public safety departments will be providing extra patrols at all of our schools.

Sheriff Bouchard has stated multiple times in the media that there are a rash of copycat threats that they are continually investigating.

What is really depressing is that my wife and I heard the news that this was the deadliest school shooting this year and we were surprised that the bar was set at only 4 children losing their lives this year. How f*cked is that?

The parents of the Michigan school shooting suspect will be charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

And there are no chances of those charges sticking. America gun laws make it super clear that there is no level of responsibility too light to be called "oppressive" or "unconstitutional". They could literally have stored their loaded gun in their son's backpack and they would never be at risk of legal repercussions.

The only hint of a chance at justice will be if the families sue the f*ck out of them and leave them in crushing debt until the day they die.

MI is one of the states that require trigger locks for guns and even with a lock their laws state you can be criminally liable for anyone committing a crime with your gun if they are under 18. However, I think the dad reported his gun missing before the shooting so they could give him a out. I think he will get hit for not having a gunlock since reporting the gun stolen wouldn't matter.

What I've read is that he reported it missing after he heard about the shooting.

Also some reports that the parents are on the run now.

According to the county sherif, they stopped communicating with their lawyer who was in the process of arranging for them to turn themselves in, and he has called in the US Marshals and FBI to help locate them.

Truly parents of the year.

Maybe they're going to the Rittenhouse home.

Supposedly. Their arraignment was scheduled for 4pm EST and they never showed up. So far as I can find, they still haven't turned themselves in and are still being searched for by the authorities.

Edit

Undersheriff Michael McCabe told CNN that a sergeant with the county's fugitive task force had spoken with one of the attorneys, who said she had not actually talked with the parents.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/12/03/us/mi...

The undersherriff doesn't seem to be taking the lawyer at his word.

Undersheriff Mike McCabe of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the statement, "doesn’t mean anything. We’re actively looking for them.”

This whole thing is just a sh*t show from top to bottom. Dad bought the gun specfically for his son, the next day he uses that gun in the shooting. Now they run "concerned about their saftey" and their lawyer is saying "yeeeeep, they'll be back aaaany minute now" as US Marshals get involved. Not a great look.

The US Marshall's tweeted an hour ago that they were adopting the case and tasking their Detroit Fugitive Apprehension team to help find them.

Lol Jesus

When do we get National "Children who died to defend our precious 2nd amendment rights" Day?

I blame antifa.

Approximately weekly.

So, there was a school shooting threat made via Yik Yak for the local high school. Deputies "picked up" the football player who made the threat and "talked with" him, possibly about his swim times.

I had never heard of Yik Yak, and from what I learned, the most socially responsible thing the social media app ever did was shut down, four years ago.

Now, like a phoenix emerging from a flaming dumpster, it has returned. From an Observer.com article:

Yik Yak, Notorious for Student Bullying and Harassment, Relaunches With Mysterious Ties to a College Marketing CEO

According to a document obtained by the Observer, Corey Cleek, the co-founder and chief executive officer of college marketplace Uloop is the primary registered agent for Yik Yak LLC.

I am sure everything will work out fine.

They're in custody now. They were hiding in an industrial building in Detroit.

A building owner saw their vehicle parked in their back parking lot, recognized it as theirs and reported it, so at least they made someone richer, as the US Marshals had put out a reward on each of them for up to $10k.
