Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Catch-All

Got this on early BF sale for PS5. Hoping to jump in this week so tagging in.

And started last night. Got through a good chunk of the first mission. Some combat, teammate powers for puzzles and combat, level up 1 power, and then finally got to the upgrade bench, which the game had been telling me I could upgrade forever, but I looked in the menu and didn't see how hehe.

Hopefully finish the opening up later today.

Don't have much time to type but I also snagged this on sale and the one thing I will say about combat is Star Lord draws a lot of aggro and I think that's the primary reason it can get frustrating and feel chaotic.

I am honestly very, very surprised how much I am enjoying this.

Rolled credits this morning. Terrific game. Certainly will make my top 10 list.
Don’t sleep in this game if you like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The game reminds me of a hybrid between Unchartered, a Telltale game and Mass Effect.

Finished. Loved it. So few games manage to do humour well. I'd wager that if Andromeda had had this level of writing and visuals people would have given it a pass.

Well, yes. I agree. If Andromeda had been better, people would have liked it more.

Because visually and narratively Guardians puts Andromeda to shame. Hell, I'd argue it's better than most Marvel movies, nevermind the videogame comparisons.

Also, it has pace and structure that Andromeda because of its dull open world can't have.

I'm on Chapter 16, minutes away from finishing the game, but there is something wrong. Peter can't move, so I keep dying over and over again. I have pressed every button and pushed every stick. I just spent the past 40 minutes trying to figure out what is happening. I downloaded and installed the latest version (I'm playing on the PS4), I closed the app, restarted the game multiple times, restarted the console, looked up information online... but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any idea of what might be going on and how to fix it? I am incredibly frustrated right now.

I am only chapter 4 but have got stuck on environment twice already.

Once I had to restore checkpoint. The other time, the game seemed to recognize and teleported me nearby where I could move again.

This is why PC games with /stuck console command are better. Or you know, level design that doesn't get you stuck in the environment.

EDIT: Right after this post I went sliding down a hill and got stuck off to the side. Game took me back to the autosave after a few seconds. Had to redo the whole environment puzzle. At least the upgrade currency I had collected was saved so I didn't have to sidetrack for those again.

I had to reload a checkpoint a couple of times as well because things were not generating correctly. In this case, though, I am in the middle of an open space, and I just have to run forward... but Peter is completely unresponsive. I just don't understand.

So, it turns out I had to push both sticks forward at the same time to move. What? Why? It doesn't matter. What matters is that I was able to finish the game, and it was amazing!

This game is fun. Characters are perfect.

Ch 4

Spoiler:

Drax! What part of quiet don't you understand?

Dead is quiet, Peter Quill.

Hehehe

Oh wow I just stumbled on a scene at Knowhere. Peter and Drax...

Spoiler:

talking about their dead families, and the afterlife.

Pretty deep for a game. And once again they nailed these characters.

Is this best played with a controller, or is keyboard and mouse good too?

So very good still. A few hours more tonight. Into Chapter 10 start when I took a break.

There were a couple of huge fights with enemies, some who healed, and some who shot electric things at me a couple chapters back. Got overwhelmed and died twice in a row. Then got a huddle and breezed through it the next time. So those are really strong. Only times I've really been frustrated with combat.

There was one other area, chapter 8 or 9, where a team member on unavailable for several rooms of combat. I think if I had known ahead of time and chosen different unlock powers, that would have went smoother. Don't think I ever died during that, but it really felt like a slog.

One thing that might help more is I keep forgetting to use Peters skills, since they are on a different button than the rest of the team. Hm

So combat was a little less fun overall tonight. But the story and characters are still great. And there's always story difficulty combat if I start to get annoyed again.

Oh yeah I also got to fight a space battle. That was fun!

Reading back through posts I see some talk about the costumes. I too have been annoyed that I'm not getting them all. I did find GotG movie costumes for everyone except Gamora. So I'd really like to find that one so everyone can match.

It sounds like there's a rewind save feature that will keep you jump into things quickly to get what you missed. I'll definitely check that out when I'm done

I managed to finish the game without finding a single outfit for Gamora. I found almost of them for Groot, a bunch for Drax and Rocket, and a couple for Peter, but none for Gamora. On the bright side, I really like her outfit, so I wasn't too upset about not being able to change it.

What? Didn't you get the gold outfit?

I am... really bad at finding things. I mean, really bad.

I found a video series of collectible locations from the trophy guide.

Here's chapter 1. The description has link to the whole playlist. Think I'll use it to backtrack a bit. Guess we'll see how many trophies I'm missing.

Got a few new combat ones last night.

Buddy told me the game has a chapter select after you beat, so I figure I'll beat the game first, then cross-reference with guides and see what I've missed. I've done already so far, currently chapter 7, but there's gotta be a lot of stuff that's sneakily hidden.

The game automatically gave me the gold costumes near the end.

Unfortunately you can't mop up collectibles via chapter select, other than the costumes, via chapter select, as you can't save.

Well that's lame. Ah well, we'll see if this game warrants additional playthroughs for narrative choices and overall story enjoyment.

It includes a good interview with the executive narrative director Mary DeMarle.

Haha. They hired writers. What a concept.

I mean, it's definitely not as new a concept as the article is making it out to be.

I actually finished chapter 8 today, and while I still am enjoying it, I'm now a bit concerned since it feels like I concluded act two of three and I'm only halfway through the game. I'll have to see how it goes from here.

Also: they really could have used less dialogue for when you go exploring. I get it, and sometimes it works comedically, but don't make a game filled with collectibles if you're going to constantly verbally punish the player every time they want to do it.

So, yeah, surprisingly good writing, but certainly not perfect and the Guardians could stand to shut up once in a while.

Haha I love the chatter when you're going the wrong way. Lets you know you are near a collectible.

"Peter fell down a hole."

"Again?"

"Looks like Captain Distraction is at it again...'Ohhhh hey guys, look at this pile of weird stuff. Let's stick our fingers in it!'"

This game is an absolute gem. Definitely making my GOTY list and I'm only on chapter...5? 6?

Finished chapter 10 and some side character spoilers...

Spoiler:

So thrilled that Mantis showed back up later! I thought it was just a nice cameo on Knowhere and was happy. But then she turns up and is key for at least a couple chapters. Yay!

Just wrapped up this game about an hour ago and I can say this was a great experience. Just a straightforward action game that clearly had a theme it wanted to hit and really laser focused on it. The writing was perfect--the transition of a group of people that were barely holding it together to really becoming a real team by the end was handled really well. Absolutely loved the side conversations where it was revealed to either Quill or the team in general each characters backstory and motivation. It's a full hour after the credits rolled and I'm still thinking about it There are very few games that have that affect on me. I said it before, but this is easily toward the top of my GOTY list.

And yet many of the movies haven't figured it out...
