NFL 2021: The Week 12 thread

Mike Tanier:

It's theoretically possible for a football team to execute an infinite drive on which they score zero points and net zero yards.

This is the sort of thing you end up thinking about while watching the San Francisco 49ers.

49ers games are prog-rock double albums: you never know when the 12-minute, six-part anthem is coming, but it's probably coming.

1. Now he's trying to get me interested in watching the 49ers
2. 12 minutes is pretty slim for a prog rock anthem

Hater.

Like he said, even after The Eternal Drive, they're still 8th in the league in yards per play. PFF has them graded the 6th overall offense. And they're 14th in explosive play rate on offense.

Tanier's just mad that the explosive plays don't come with 20 air yards on a throw first.

And Detroit remains winless

What a Lions way to lose that game.

There were rumors that Matt Nagy was going to get fired after this game.

Lions making sure that doesn't happen and that Chicago must still suffer.

The more Lions way would have been for Detroit to get the ball back, have time to drive the length of the field, have a short FG to win, and then the long snapper fires it back so hard it flies past the holder's head and bounces all the way through the other end for a game-ending safety.

The Steelers remain the only team to play the Lions and not win.

Yay.

Congratulations Matt Nagy, you have literally cleared the lowest bar that could be set for you.

America did not need a Mark Davis crotch shot today.

Oh thank God this endless hell is over.

That was bad.

Saw a good tweet though: the referees are really America's team.

Tony Boselli and Patrick Willis or GTFO.

Willie Anderson can go in after Boselli.

I'm not making the case for putting Fred Taylor in, but I am making the case that Fred Taylor is far more deserving than Eddie "3.6 yards a carry, even Bettis thinks it's a joke" George. I'm also making the case that Fred Taylor belongs well above Ricky Watters. So if any RB in this group makes it, it should be Fred.

I'm going to take the lack of argument against this comment as being tacit agreement.

I'm glad we're all on the same page for this.

I didn't watch any of it, but just looked at the box score . . . 28 penalties? 14 each?

Wow.

Just . . . wow.

How many penalties were called just during the last LV FG attempt?

3, not counting the pass interference penalty that put the ball near where it ended up being kicked from.

Saints with 65 yards of total offense at halftime. 51 net passing yards.

It's tough when you don't have a quarterback. I mean it's not like they have the league's 18th highest paid quarterback just sitting on the bench doing nothing...

They're lucky Josh Allen has been turning back into a scrub since losing the Josh Allen Bowl. Buffalo should be smashing the Saints.

Dammit, I missed the obvious argument opportunity.

Fred Taylor over those two so damn easily. He's not getting in, but over those two easily. He was really good on some solid teams, but, well, no ring, small market, and not enough attention. Win a ring in some place like Dallas or NY, he might have had a shot, but small market in Florida makes it harder. I will look forward to discussing the same thing regarding Lavonte David later.

Boselli and Willis I waffle on just due to shorter careers even with the greatness they showed. Have no problems with either. Still, my vote is Ronde Barber (*shocked face*), Torry Holt, DeMarcus Ware, Zach Thomas, Jared Allen. Sure, why not.

They also don't have a Josh Allen to stop Josh Allen.

Sounds like somebody needs another Josh Allen.

Josh Allen would block for Josh Allen to protect Josh Allen from Josh Allen so that Josh Allen wouldn't sack Josh Allen, intercept Josh Allen and force fumbles from Josh Allen like Josh Allen did to Josh Allen in the Josh Allen-Josh Allen Bowl.

I used to be uncertain about the short career guys too.

However, once the Hall decided to induct guys like Terrell Davis, then it was no longer a question for debate. The precedent was set to include the short career guys, and they should now be considered as satisfying the standards for induction. Otherwise, you're applying an inconsistent career length requirement at random.

I was much less certain about Tony Boselli as an inductee before the Terrell Davis induction. But now I don't think there's any reasonable basis for exclusion. If Terrell Davis is a Hall of Famer, then career length is off the table as a basis for exclusion (at least for anyone who had more than 3 elite-level seasons).

I wasn't on board with the Davis induction, but I'm less on board with punishing some guys for shorter careers while giving guys with even shorter peaks a hall pass. The Hall voters made their decision on which side of the career length argument they come down on, now they need to apply that standard consistently.

Spoiler:

I said, a HALL pass. *tap tap* is this thing on?

Good thing there's college basketball on causes this football game sucks.

Twitter is on fire with people wondering exactly what the point of Taysom Hill is, while he spends this primetime game sitting on the bench doing nothing. No touches, no targets, nothing.

EDIT: Broadcast claims he has a foot injury, though he's still active.

Legion makes completely valid points, and has swung me to Boselli and Patrick Willis without question.

Spoiler:

But right after Ronde #@$!!! Barber.

It helps explain why the Saints won only one Super Bowl in 15 seasons when they had one of the best passing QBs of all time. I am totally here for it, btw.

Their offense, yes hobbled by injuries, is really filled with such utter replacement-level guys it's sad. Right now they're the Detroit Lions of the South.

One of my favorite little zingers after last year; Tom Brady has won as many NFC Championship games as Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.

The Onion's Things You Should Never Say At Thanksgiving Dinner #21:
“What’s the score of the Detroit Lions game?”

Spoiler:

You’re wasting your breath, always assume they’re losing.

(not sure why I spoiler'd this; everyone knows it already)

Days like this I kind of miss having Sunday Ticket, because I always liked putting a terrible game on the second TV. Would it have been Jets-Texans or Falcons-Jaguars? Either of those could very much be entertainingly awful.
