Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

I grabbed Dusk and Amid Evil during a sale on PC a few months ago and they were both great with mouse/keyboard. If you like those you’ll probably love Prodeus.

I don't know why I've been sleeping on the boomer shooter revival, but I finally played DUSK leading up to Halloween, and am playing Amid Evil now.

Ion Fury and Prodeus are next on the list.

All 4 of these games have Switch ports (not yet released in the cases of AE and Prodeus), so we're not even off-topic.

I dunno, I played Doom and Doom 2 and a bit of Quake in the 90s. I don't really have a yearning to go back to that.

Love the retro side scrollers and RPGs sometimes, but early FPS games? Nah.

Someone has only heard of DOOM? Like, I get that we are all different ages here, but only knowing a little about DOOM sort of feels weird.

It's like saying, "yeah, I've heard about Super Mario!"

I dunno all Blind_Evil's gaming background but as a primarily console player and console-style gamer, it's kind of easy to not know much about DOOM if you haven't kept up with it. Knowing DOOM exists and is a first-person shooter is very easy, and unless you go out of your way to research why it became so influential then it's pretty indecipherable from any other boomer shooter of the time, regardless of being the inspiration to most of them.

It's just like people saying "I've never seen a Star Wars movie". They exist! And amazingly enough, most of them don't actually know a lot about the movies! It just happens.

And, yes, there are plenty of people that have only heard of Super Mario and don't really know much beyond that.

Don't want to go back to pure gameplay games? Gotta have all those Big Narrative Cutscenes?

Well I guess it would have mouse aiming at least?

Last time I tried to replay Dark Forces using pgup and pgdn to aim was... not good.

My OLED Switch is arriving tomorrow!
I want to trade in my older (good) one, but I have three nephews and may just pass it along.

I have kept mine so that my son and I don't have to haggle over who can play on the device.

I will also say that after a few months I am still blown away at how good it looks when I play in handheld. It is just amazing.

Didn't it come out a month ago?

Yeah, you gotta play those old games with modern source ports. Bethesda has at least provided new ports/remasters for some of the old id games (the new Quake remaster is nice, and removes the need for source ports for most players).

Dark Forces is one of the old ones I have avoided playing much of due to the lack of a good source port. Although one is finally in development.

Ooh, 1.0 estimated out in December.

There were lots of interesting Doom console ports. 32x baby!

yeah, I've heard about Super Mario.

My parents always steered me away from game consoles so my gaming was almost exclusively PC (and Commodore 64) growing up.

My first Nintendo console was the Switch I bought earlier this year.

Now that I look back I’ve heard of Quake as well but never played. And I’m no spring chicken, 37 here. I just didn’t play PC games and had no interest in the console ports.

I assume I've played Doom but I wouldn't be able to say exactly when or where. Certainly not when it was new, even if I did get hooked on Heretic for a while.

Maybe I tried building it when the source opened up? Or tried that version where you kill OS processes by shooting them?

The Quake remaster released a couple months ago plays great on the Switch.

How does Doom fair with additions like mouselook?

Like it didn't even have jump, so I'm curious how that stuff would affect the gameplay. Seems like some of the design definitely wouldn't have anticipated it.

When I played a Windows port with mouse look, it just meant that vertical auto aiming was disabled. For example, in the original game if there were enemies on a high balcony, you just needed to line up your aim on the x-axis and your shots would automatically hit them. With the mouse look port, you now need to put your cross hairs on the enemy.

Honestly, it feels pretty modern with mouselook on autoaim disabled.

I've played through all of DOOM, DOOM II, and both Plutonia and TNT (Final DOOM) that way.

If you never played DOOM the old way, you probably would not realize that it wasn't this way originally.

Does anyone want this Satisfye ZenGrip Pro Slim? Has the case and the grip.

Important FYI: It does NOT fit the OLED or the Lite!

I will gladly send it along to anyone for the cost of postage. Non-grinder DM.

They are releasing an OLED version of the grip, along with a “slim” model, if you weren’t aware.

I've seen people hack (literally) that in half to use with other handhelds.

Hmm, since I've had no takers, perhaps I will do a little hacking!
Never thought of that, thanks!

I was looking at games on sale and had a couple questions. I’m looking for a good couch coop game to play with my kids, an 8 year old who loves games and a 6 year old who likes games but is sometimes hesitant about new things.

The ones that look the best so far are Castle Crashers, Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time, Overcooked, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Has anyone played these, especially with kids? Any other recommendations are welcome too.

Also, MUA looks cool, but I’m a little hesitant about grindiness, and it possibly being a little tough. And it’s the most expensive.

My daughter (7 yo) played through Castle Crashers with me and had a good time. The potty humour was pretty funny for her.

Castle Crashers would be great with kids, and if it matters, there is a toggle to turn off blood/gore. No idea about Marvel for kids but I've played with wife a bit and it works.

If you have a Switch and don't already have Kirby Star Allies and Mario 3D World, those are great family couch 4 player co-op games.

Yeah, I should have mentioned I have most of the big Nintendo first party stuff. Kirby and Mario have both been great.

So was mostly looking at indies on sale. Might just go with whatever both kids are interested in the most. Since I’m most interested in just playing something with them.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is not an easy game and I didn't like it, the combat and controls felt slightly off to me, but the camera was gawd awful and seriously the wirst I've encountered in a iso action game in years. I died way more time because I couldn't see than from enemies.
