Playstation 5 Catch-All

Again Wario64 and CheapAssGamer are good follows on Twitter. They have alerted whenever Best Buy or Walmart announce stock in advance. And whenever Target, GameStop, or Sony have some live.

No, not yet. I have weird mixed feelings about the whole thing. I’m looking forward to getting one but, at the same time, I’m enjoying playing and finishing older games without the pressure of newer games needing to be played right away (as most new PS4 games are now going automatically onto the ‘play on PS5’ list.)

Me to. Don’t get me wrong, if I could buy one tonight I’d happily give some giant evil corporation my money. But I don’t really have the time or money to devote to allot of games, and this is forcing me through my backlog.

If it's any consolation, I snagged a launch PS5, and while Returnal was a fun romp for a while, my gaming time has wholly consisted of Hades, Nioh 2, FFXIV (for a month or so), Dead by Daylight, Fortnite (kid bonding), Apex Legends (Fedaykin bonding), Monster Hunter World: Iceborn, and Risk of Rain 2. Still feels like almost everything work a crack is just a gussied-up version of something you could happily play on a last-gen console.

Yeah a lot of it is, but for someone who didn't get a PS4 pro, it was a nice upgrade from the standard PS4. Way better loading times and 4k patches for many of those PS4 games.

Meh, my launch PS4 still runs fine. And there is only a little smoke when it tries to play a game past 2019 or so.

Unfortunately playing PS4 games from the PS5's internal drive doesn't give me any time to read the loading screen tips!

It's pretty dire here in Australia. After months of trying I got on to a *pre-order* list in September. That pre-order has just been delayed until 2022.

So my launch PS4 might just have to struggle through another Aussie summer. Like Higgledy though I'm kind of enjoying revisiting old PS4 games and saving up a bunch of games from the last few years for when I do eventually get a PS5. I mean, this can't go on forever... right?

Hell, I had a PS4 Pro (it definitely made a difference in a lot of PSVR games), and the PS5's a huge upgrade as a PS4 player. Last month I fired up God Of War just to see what it looked like at 60fps, and to my surprise I got sucked into playing the entire thing. I actually enjoyed it more the second time (playing in New Game+ and having all my gear & upgrades from the previous runthough didn't hurt); I'd forgotten how genuinely funny the writing was.

Like many other people have posted here, most of my playing has just been going through my PS4 back catalog, but that's normal for me - I have no interest in playing multiplayer, so I'm happy to keep a large wish list and only pick up games when they go on sale.

I have a PS4 Slim and I am in no hurry whatsoever to try and get a PS5. It will happen eventually, but until then... too many games, like they say on DLC.

If you haven't tried it yet, I have always had great success using www.nowinstock.net which includes getting a PS5 back in March. It's still luck of the draw that you get the notification at a time you can easily go to the website, but I find it way more reliable than news stories and twitter accounts which are always two steps behind.

I set this up. God help me, I set this up.

Sadly, I bought this before I have a PS5. I think the Black/Black look is my jam.

Well Sam's Club had them last night and Target this morning. Both Twitter accounts I mentioned were on it.

Maybe it is time for me to start back on Twitter then.

I decided to spring for one mainly due to the streamlining of the corners compared to the original. I think the grey with black interior will look sharp.

I just popped in here to express my frustration with Sony. I received an email yesterday, alerting me to the fact that Sony are now selling PS5s directly to Playstation account holders. So I go to the website (admittedly, I only saw the email 10 hours after it was sent)... and discover that the console is 'Out of Stock' with Sony too.

I am now resigned to the fact that I will not own this console until next year... sometime.

@Higgledy - Have you managed to snag one yet?

Sony has been selling them direct for a little while. You can register to buy direct. I believe if they have any left after all those that got an invite then the open it to the public? Maybe that's what your email was? Or letting you know you can sign up? They release a certain amount of consoles at a certain time and they always sell out but if you get an invite I think you have a really good, if not guaranteed (they don't actually guarantee it, of course) chance of getting one.

I actually got an invite this week. They sent it on Wednesday for the sale on Thursday at 11PT. You log in at that time and they put you in a queue. Initially it said my queue was over an hour but it ended up being only a few minutes and I was able to buy one. This was the only way I was going to get one as I'm not interested in the stress of the other methods personally.

Oops

Cross posting from deals thread:

Western Digital WD BLACK SN850 1TB is lowest price ever, $150, at Newegg for 4 more hours. Missed the email this morning but just saw it.

This is the most highly recommended PS5 expansion drive so far, beating the Sony internal drive in speeds even. So time to double up my storage.

Stele wrote:

Yes there's lots of good ones on Amazon for $15 or so. Most reviews mention the PS5 and/or the hard drive.

I got this one.

Heatsink got here yesterday. Hard drive today.

Watched videos. It looks really simple to install. Will try after the kids are asleep tonight and report back.

Ok that was surprisingly easy. Screwdriver that came with my heatsink was a lifesaver though. I don't have any Philips heads that small.

I did think I screwed up for a minute because I was having trouble popping the cover back on. Maybe my heatsink was a little more centered to the connection side than the screw-in side? Could have made it snug. But anyway it's back together.

Started up and it asked me to format. Then it reported the speeds at 6600, well over the 5k required, and near the 7k that that drive is supposed to max out at. Moved most of my PS4 games over to it for now. Although maybe I'll make it the primary drive? Just wanted to test it out with a few things first and see how it goes.

I managed to get one by turning on notifications for this stock tracking twitter. Worth a shot if you're not doing this already.

Thanks, I am signed up to one of those twitter accounts, but they always seem to ping me when I'm busy doing something else (and the stock disappears in minutes).

Glad you got one though, I guess that shows there are actually some around!

Heads up for the UK Playstation users, there's a big discount on 1 year of Playstation Plus at Shopto. Enter 'EXTRATEN' at checkout & you'll grab it for just under £30. Limited time only apparently, got one myself.

Nice, thanks - the two years I bought last time Shopto ran a promotion like that runs out next year.

Looks like [$REDACTED] has a similarly low price for US owners - 31% off.

Edit: And Amazon's got them for $39.99.

(Further edit: oops, didn't realize that site was a no-no. In fact, although I've bought from them before, this time my card company refused the transaction.)

We generally don't post that site in deals thread. Has been discussed many times but it's not an official seller, some kind of grey market, and not reputable.

There should be PSN deals at actual retailers next week for black Friday

Can confirm there's no guarantee even with the invite email when it comes through. I got my special invite to log in to the store to buy one a couple weeks ago. I logged in just a few minutes after the appointed time in the email message, got through the queue also in a few minutes, and I still saw "Out of Stock" for both versions of the console.

I'm almost to the point of getting one on stockx and paying an extra couple hundred bucks for it. Would that just mean I'm feeding the people who use bots to buy out from under us normal people though? I don't exactly want to encourage them.

GameStop keeps having bundles. Extra controller, 2 or 3 games. At least that way you're spending the extra money on something tangible.

I think Newegg has had a couple in the shuffles too.

Any word on stores that will have PS5s on Black Friday? I may stand outside and test my luck.

It’s an individual choice but the number of games you can only play on PS5 is really low. I personally wouldn’t pay more than retail for it.

As for Black Friday, I know at least some retailers have said that consoles will be online only.

Today I started playing Kena Bridge of Spirts, which is a beautiful game.

Probably in my top 3 games of the year.
