NFL 2021: The Week 9 thread

Can't wait for A. A. Ron to land endorsement deals with My Pillow and AT&T.

I don't see how this disqualifies him from a future Jeopardy job given who's currently hosting.

She tried to walk a lot of that back.

And I think Ken Jennings is taking over the rest of this month.

As a side note, can we all agree that there is no easier way to tell if someone is not a certain thing than if they say they're a certain thing?

Like if someone says they're "drama-free," or a "nice guy" or a "critical thinker," they are almost 100% guaranteed to not be that thing.

EDIT: I should add, this only applies to POSITIVE personality traits. If it's a negative one, it's usually 100% honest.

I'm not a Jaguars fan!

....

f*ck it didn't work

Now you tell me.

She "walked it back" with the "do your own research" bullsh*t.

I am starting to wonder if there is a player (much less an organization) in the NFL that I, as a progressive, open-minded individual, can root for without feeling disgusting. I used to think it was A A Ron, but I guess not.

Mark Davis is the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

  • Whose worst failings are what, a bad haircut, inheriting his ownership stake, and not being as rich as the other billionaire owners?
  • is calling for the WFT emails to be released
  • has a section in wikipedia that reads like a normal person and not a terrible human being
  • despite being the only team in Nevada, was not the owner caught soliciting prostitution.
  • Who managed to convince Sin City to build a stadium for the raiders? I have sympathy for most of the team/city relationships and whether stadiums should be paid for with taxpayer money, but Las Vegas is special in my book.
  • is not the racist owner of a world-series winning team that still does the tomahawk chop in 2021

/s, but not entirely because the bar is simply so low.

PS - Come root for the Steelers, the worst thing we have is tiktok dancing and a QB that was sleazy over a decade ago, hopefully retiring after this year. Solid ownership, a successful black head coach, and generally controversy-free coaching (give or take a joey porter, and todd haley's insistence on the bubble screen) We mostly managed to keep AB within the usual confines of a diva WR while he was here, compared to the disaster that was Mr. Big Chest.

I think Mark Davis can be summed up with his ill-advised "I can breathe" tweet. Which, in this context, was meant to actually show support for the Floyd family following the Chauvin conviction, but instead invoked the smarmy t-shirts cops wore to mock the victim.

His sentiment was in the right place, and he just completely bungled the execution.

Emmes, you're kind of leaving out Big Ben's sexual assault allegations.

A. A. Ron's on Pat McAffee's show right now and he's totally that guy.

Aaron Rodgers claims he’s a victim of “the woke mob” and “cancel culture.”

Rodgers claims to have done his own research and that he has an allergy to an ingredient in the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, and he said that his decision to seek alternative treatments was “what was best for my body.”

Edit: HE CONSULTED WITH HIS "GOOD FRIEND" JOE ROGAN!

I guess we know what post football career he's gunning for now that Jeopardy is off the table.

I personally will not be tuning into the Aaron Rodgers experience on XFM

Do you think he’ll sign a deal with Barstool or Outkick the Coverage? Fits right in with both

Somewhere in the below video it's mentioned that Rodgers is friends with Barstool founder and accused sexual assaulter Dave Portnoy:

I was only half listening playing Phasmophobia last night and was paranoid that Stugotz's voice would piss off the ghost.

Oh, that's an even-money bet. Super tough to call.

Last thing though:

I want to know what it took the NFL, which has never met a standard it couldn't subvert, ignore, or gut into PR-friendly meaninglessness, to tell one of its most visible, elite (?) athletes, "no, buddy. That's not gonna cut it"

Like Aaron's "presentation" must be absolutely amazing. Was it in Powerpoint or was it a collection of YouTube videos? You said this "needs to be a conversation," Aaron, share your knowledge with us!

EDIT: Also, RE: MLK

I specifically called them out, and that's why I consider our current QB to be sleazy. I really don't want to get into the details on an online NFL forum, but there's a bunch of extremely poor decision making on the non-Ben participants in both cases. Ben has documented infidelity to apologize for and isn't my favorite player, but it's a long way from that to criminal offenses. If infidelity was a dealbreaker when it came to rooting for sports teams, I would not have any teams to root for.

In both cases, I do not think that they meet the threshold of a criminal offense, just like how even in the #metoo movement there haven't been too many criminal charges filed. But to summarize:

2009: Is consent something you get to decide the morning after you visit a celebrity's hotel room alone, or should you make up your mind the same day? If you bragged about the incident to your coworker afterwards, does that imply consent?
2010: If you consent to drinking a staggeringly unwise amount of alcohol in a short period of time, should you have any responsibility at all for what happens afterwards when you go to a place with no cameras or witnesses? The laws were changed in 2012 from yes to it depends. Also, Ben seemed to legitimately turn himself into an adult after this one.

Not sure how I missed you calling him sleazy. Sorry about that. Still, I consider cheering for a Big Ben-lead team is like cheering for a Kobe-lead Lakers, there's a stink.

Pretty much every team has something hanging over their heads.

Definitely ill-advised, but I did give him a few points for at least trying. I guess I had just filed it away under "things white people say", not some weird way of signaling support to the cops.

His sentiment was in the right place, and he just completely bungled the execution.

I think that just reinforces my thought that he's the hero we deserve.

And a lot of them are from this season.

For sure, if you're asking me whether I think he was a married, predatory womanizer that I don't want anyone considering to be a role model, I agree. Am I sad that this is somewhat normal for celebrity sports figures, yes. If you as a fellow AFCN fan want to give him that other nickname starting with an 'R', that's trash talk, though I don't think it's necessarily appropriate to be throwing around that word too easily when we just want to watch sports.

I think what's helped me personally is how he's talked about it in the years since. Some combination of his wife, his coaches, his more senior peers, and his faith seemed to finally make him capable of adulting, and he's been willing to praise all of them. I've been reserving the right to withdraw that opinion for years, if he ever backslides.

My boss is from Pittsburgh and a huge sports fan. Even he thinks Ben got off because he was rich and powerful. I trust his judgement on this sort of stuff because he knows people involved in the organization.

Restructure to be a FA after this year and super expensive this year. Looks like the idea is to try and make him a FA Monday.

My 8yo: "No Rodgers Rate, now. Only the Patrick Price."

Removing the final two years turn this into a rent-a-player scenario, which changes the calculus somewhat for many teams. Might be that was a move to dissuade the Jacksonvilles of the league from making a claim.

That said, there is one other element to consider for potential claiming teams, and that's the franchise tag.

If a non-contender claimed him and then used the franchise tag to keep him, I would be so happy.

If Baalke did it, I would take a brief leave of absence from Baalke sh*t-talking.

EDIT: Also, if your team isn't going to be free agent buyers next offseason, claiming OBJ and letting him walk in the offseason would be good for your compensatory pick formula...

I did not see it above but my wife just read that the medicine Rodgers took that he told covered him was Ivermectin.

So kind of a dummy whammy because if he thought he was smart enough to do his own research and then took that then...?

I swear every time Red Zone switches to a Browns game, I see OBJ dropping a pass. Is he even good anymore?

As someone who has watched alot of Browns football, he can still play (if healthy). He has a bad shoulder now that I think is contributing to his drops, but now that he is (mostly) over his ACL tear he is starting to run routs and get open like he used to.

Thus the video OBSr. put out, and thus the nail in the coffin.

Despite what his Scouting report said (and how gaga PFF was over him), Baker is not the world's most accurate QB. He's fine, but lacks finesse.

OBJ is, or was, a top tier, creative WR who frequently is open at times Baker isn't expecting. This leads to rushed throws that are generally in the vicinity but frequently overthrown (cause Baker always throws it as hard as he can) or just out of reach.

I have no idea what OBJ has left in the tank after so many injuries, but Baker was always the wrong QB for him and it was obvious after a few games. I'm shocked they hung onto OBJ this long.

So it looks like OBJ was released without a modification of his contract, so he is pretty likely to be a free agent. No idea where he will go now.
