Welcome folks, and happy “74th Anniversary of the one and only flight of the Spruce Goose” week! The Spruce Goose was a flying boat designed and built by the eccentric millionaire (is there any other kind?) Howard Hughes. Due to wartime restrictions on aluminum, it was made entirely out of wood. It was six times larger than any aircraft of its time and was intended to be used to transport troops and materials across the Atlantic, but it was not finished in time for the war. In 1947, Howard Hughes himself piloted it a total distance of one mile, staying airborne for 26 seconds. After that, it was hangared and secretly maintained by a full-time staff until Hughes’ death in 1976. Now, it sits in a museum in Oregon, and the enormous hangar it was in has been turned into a sound stage where, among other things, they filmed Titanic. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you build something huge, but don’t show it to anyone.

Just Dance 2022 boogies on up this week with 40 new tracks, featuring songs by Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, and that hit song from Frozen2.

The Binding of Isaac: Repentance is the second expansion for this bible-inspired, roguelike dungeon-crawler. Made by a team led by a former modder of the game, it’s like one of those belt’n’braces mods that switches up a game so comprehensively as to be almost a sequel. On top of all the new rooms, enemies, and weapons, there’s a bunch of gameplay and rebalancing tweaks that render many tried and true strategies obsolete. The Binding of Isaac is 10 years old now, so I guess this kind of overhaul is required to keep the game fresh.

Forza Horizon 5 officially launches on November 9, but folks who preordered the Premium Edition (or, if you’re on GamePass, preordered the Premium DLC Bundle) will get an early look at it starting November 5. The Horizon series is about open-world racing, and this one is set in a fictional Mexico. You’ll be driving through jungles, an ancient Mayan temple, and an active volcano—as you do. I’m fascinated to see what tires you pick for driving through lava. It will also have ray tracing and the customary Forza graphical amazingness.

If you want a little more combat and gadgetry in your racing, then there’s Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R, by the devs behind King of Seas, a surprisingly-chill pirate game from earlier this year. As you race around the track, you can deploy traps, use paintball weapons, or find shortcuts and speed boosts. This is based on the animated Fast & Furious Spy Racers spin-off TV show (that I only just now knew existed) and will feature characters from that series.

Conway: Disappearance at Dahlia View is billed as an “observational thriller”. Set in 1950s Britain, you play as a retired detective investigating the disappearance of an 8-year-old girl at his apartment complex. It’s got a Rear Window vibe: your character is wheelchair-bound, and spying on observing his neighbours through their windows. There’s also some puzzles and interrogations to be had.

Bloodshore is a live-action, interactive movie about a Battle Royale reality show that pits celebrities, streamers, and death row inmates against each other on an island. At various points in the movie, you’ll be asked to make choices on behalf of one of the characters: Nick, a washed-up actor. Will he get popped in the first five minutes, or will he survive long enough to blow the lid off the whole thing?

Imagine if the Titanic were an intergalactic cruiser, with impeccable art deco trimmings and staffed by human-looking robots. Then imagine Among Us-style impostor gameplay where you are either a rogue robot trying to cause disaster or a passenger trying to prevent said disaster and suss out the impostors. This is the premise of First Class Trouble which will be free on PS Plus this month.

Demon Turf is an indie 3D platformer with a kind of 90s, Poochie attitude. It’s got 2D characters moving through a 3D space and a bangin’ techno soundtrack, featuring rapping by the player character herself: Beebz, a demon girl who is travelling through the demonic realms to take out their bosses and become the Demon Queen.

Anime Gundam fans may want to check out Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation Code Fairy. It’s being released in 3 volumes: one per fortnight over the next month. It’s essentially an expansion to the previous game, Battle Operation 2, with a new story.

Saving the best for last with this week’s GOTW: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise on the Switch. It’s a big chunk of paid DLC that’s dropping together with the game’s free Version 2.0 update. The 3DS version of Animal Crossing had a spin-off game, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, which focused on designing houses for yourself and the other villagers. This DLC basically brings all of that into the Switch version. Our family bounced off of Animal Crossing last year, mostly due to not giving it a fair shake after one of my kids immediately regretted his decision to name his island “Poopy Island”. This expansion, plus the Roblox servers being down, could be the thing that finally draws them in.

Had to avoid low hanging, Star Citizen jokes when writing this one up, eh?

Bloodshore sounds awful. I'm gonna buy it.

I'm stoked for Forza Horizon, though I didn't pre-order. There's so damn much content in these games I'm fine playing the base version until dlc goes on sale.

Been waiting months for binding of isaac repentance on consoles, but this release date is only for north america

Argh! That's a bit old-school, I didn't see anything about it being US only.

Apparently, according to the games creator's twitter account, it comes out in other countries "not longer after".

I played 15 minutes of Unpacking before noping the eff out.

I moved house in June, so a large portion of my year has involved transferring things in and out of boxes. Can't deal with more of that. But the game seems neat for someone who DIDN'T just move house.
