Coronavirus Tales

So our son (8) tested positive last Monday and comes out of iso on Thursday. Local health department has told us our daughter (5) needs to begin her own quarantine AFTER he emerges for 14 days. And all of us not our son have to retest 3 days after his iso ends to make certain we don't have it.

This is new news to us (including our daycare?). No symptoms of anyone in the house (son had a slight cough and was tired for ~5 days).

Obviously I'm primarily glad no one is sick. This is the most important thing. I'm also frustrated with needing a full two weeks of stay home care.

And I'm furious at everyone who could have done their part to get this under control and chose not to. I'm kinda with Stele from this thread or the other one: f*ck these selfish f*cks.

This. I had gotten comfortable being vaccinated and returning to less mask requirements. Now I'm going to go full reverse. Mask whenever I'm out and get boosters as often as I can.

I have a feeling Delta may be the last variant of note since it's super contagious. Maybe not, but even so a seasonal vaccine that many get with other folks having natural immunity and/or prior vaccinations is where we're gonna end up.

To paraphrase Doctor Malcom: Life (or viruses) finds a way. Let me introduce you to AY.4.2 an evolution of Delta that is competitive with it and is seeing growing numbers in the U.K. ( BBC news link ). I think any assumptions about the final state of Covid 19 are probably unwise.

Delta is at an infection rate of 8. It's about as infectious as things tend to get. Measles is basically the only virus more transmissible. As such, I don't see it getting too much more infectious.

Anyway, I realize I'm derailing the Covid Tales thread instead of the Covid thread so I'll drop my ongoing retort(s).

Well the few recommendations we could find suggested Moderna booster with J&J original so that's what my wife got tonight. Watching her for side effects and planning the same for myself tomorrow afternoon.

And holy crap arm pain. She fell asleep early right after the kids. But I was awake for 10 or 11 hours after mine and tried to move around. Still hurts like a MF this morning. Hers seems to have subsided finally. So hopefully mine won't last after today.

No fever or anything so far.

Well explitive. My son has it now. Feeling crappy, like a stomach flu. It's funny since we were watching for my daughter to be sick due to a classroom exposure. But so far, she is fine.

Got a Moderna booster after my J&J vaccine. I am having a much more severe immune reaction to the Moderna than I ever did with J&J.

Reminds me of when my wife, son, and I got sick with a real bad mysterious flu in Feb 20, you know, before Trump admitted that Covid 19 was here.

I'm curious, to what degree? Fever, chills?

I'm doing my darndest to avoid getting a booster because of side effects. I was SO tired with the J&J and had a rough 24 hours of fever and chills.

If I gotta go through that again...? Ugh.

Yeah I had the fever with J&J but nothing as bad with Moderna. Well, the arm soreness, much worse than most vaccines.

It's better than getting covid.

Also, "second shot often has worse side effects" isn't "second shot always has worse side effects".

My own second shot was much milder that way.

Oh, for sure, was just curious since I had J&J first. The reports were that booster shots had side effects but that they were generally a bit less frequent than with the original round.

But if I get Moderna/Pfizer as a booster I feel like I'll need to schedule an appropriate time to feel like poo for a day or two afterwards.

Like a flu. Low grade fever, body aches, alternating heat and chills.

Better than Covid-19.

Just got moderna booster after JJ in April. Washington state has a system to save our vaccine cards in a Google wallet with a qr code businesses can scan if they are required to check.

What's the name of the app you're using for that, Mao?

Outstanding.

Just downloaded and yep, it works! Another example of good government in action.

So, I’m now a couple weeks back to work after Covid and I find myself still physically a lot slower—partly on purpose until I feel my body catch back up, and partly because my capacity is just less right now. But what surprises me most is how much slower I feel mentally. It’s not a hugely significant amount, but I can feel a difference. Task switching takes longer, my motivation and urgency are in the dumps, and my capacity and drive for self care simply can’t even be found. Some of it is Covid-triggered depression, but I’m starting to wonder about mental elements of the effects of Covid.

Ouch, that's awful. Mono was like that for me. Even after I was "better" mono felt like depression. It was icky, but time certainly helped.

So sorry to hear that, Antichulius. I agree with Garion. Time should heal, but it’s definitely a really nasty disease. Maybe look into some anti-inflammatory diet stuff?

Got my 5yo his first jab today!

Awesome. Still 2 years away for my oldest.

Wow, 2 co-workers from my old dev team (2 years ago) are leaving. I know one of them was a bit of a conspiracy guy. So I'm guessing vaccine mandate means he's quitting.

Woot. Former smokers count in the guidelines, so I am scheduled for 3rd Moderna shot on Friday after work.

Nine year old got his today, he is unbelievably happy! Our school is on a year round schedule, so if we can get past Thanksgiving when his winter break starts, he will be fully vaxxed before going back in January.

So, we're at 70% vaccinated in Greece. 12 year olds and up can get Pfizer or Moderna. And our cases are shooting up and up and up, without any kind of explanation. We already have a *huge* number of limits compared to the U.S. in terms of going inside anywhere that's not a doctor's office/pharmacy/supermarket means getting your vaccine status and ID checked (we have a QR code app).

And yet...our big surge before was 3000 cases per day, and we just hit 7000 cases per day (population 10.5 M).

They're not talking about closing schools, they're mostly talking about more ways to keep the unvaccinated in their homes.

I am hoping they follow the U.S. again with letting kids get the vaccine. My older kids are fully vaccinated, while my five year old is not.

Just got my moderna booster after getting j and j back in April. Pleasantly surprised to see the vaccination site as busy as it is. Hopefully this one won’t hit me quite as bad as the initial dose did.

Good luck, I had the same combo and I had a reaction after the Booster and I didn't have one after J&J

Yeah I had bad fever after J&J for 10 hours or so. But nothing from Moderna. I did preemptively take some ibuprofen before bed though.

Wow, yeah, that's a big ol spike. Has your country recently seen a bunch of bad weather that kept folks inside? That could be a driver.

Or simply 70% of 12+ simply isn't high enough to keep numbers in check against Delta...
