Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

I didn't particularly like the first season of Locke and Key but I liked the premise enough to read the comics. The comics are better but still have some dumb aspects. I'm two episodes into the second season and I don't know if I can make it much further. It's such an interesting premise but the everything else about it is not great.

I enjoyed season 1 of Lost in Space but fell off at the start of season 2 (the first episode felt overly contrived.) Having learnt that season 3 is imminent and that it is the last season, I decided to give it another go. I’m glad I did. As you get deeper into season 2 the story evolves in fantastic directions and it’s brilliant to see every member of the Robinson family solving problems and overcoming obstacles together and alone. June Harris, the actress who plays the deliciously wicked and untrustworthy Dr Smith, is fantastic.

The actor's name is Parker Posey, and I see what you've mixed up but I don't think I can explain it without spoilers

Ah yes. I see my mistake. Parker Posey is a far superior name.

The second season of Another Life is up and - well while still being pretty mediocre it’s a considerable improvement over the last season. It’s enough trash TV to get me to the second episode

The first season carried over the characters and some plot lines from the comics. But the budget for the show needed to be like at least 10 million per episode more to capture the wonder of what was shown in the comics.

The second season, which I haven't finished yet, veers pretty far off of what happens in the comics and only takes a few scenes or plot points from it. I'm like "ugh" when we watch it but my wife who hasn't read the comics is like "Yay! More!".

She also enjoys watching The Good Witch. Which she informed me, despite the title, there is no spell casting or any witchery even though there are characters that identify as witches. It would be like watching Bewitched sans the bewitching. So there is that.

Update:
So I saw my wife was just watching The Good Witch again. So I went over and asked her to confirm that there is no witchcraft in the show and she made a "disgusted" face at me. I may have been over asking about this whole point of contention a bit too much.

So she goes back to watching the scene that is playing and then says "The earrings make her want to be with her husband more."

So I take that as an affirmative that there actually is witchcraft in the show.

But then after I go in to the other room and back to work, I'm working from home, I start thinking regardless if a husband buys her wife some earrings wouldn't she naturally want to be with her husband a bit more? That's not magic.

Then after some more time had passed I had a more diabolical thought. What if those earrings in the show were not magical at all. That my wife was annoyed at me questioning the show and was slyly suggesting that I need to buy her earrings to get on her good side now.

Being a husband is sometimes hard.

Ended up staying up late last night to watch Doctor Sleep. The fresher talk about Mike Flanagan by way of Midnight Mass had something to do with piquing my interest as well as it being a sequel to a very old, very influential horror movie.

It's such a different movie from The Shining. I think the film's marketing and reviews tell that story well enough but it didn't really hit me until about halfway through its significant runtime. I think I liked it overall. Were I really looking to have my socks scared off I might have been disappointed since it's more of a drama/suspense movie than straight horror. Ewan was great and so was the actor playing his young accomplice.

I want to enjoy this soooo much. Please be good, please be good.

Okay, I see a lot more Spike swagger which makes me happier

It’s weird how cryptic they’re being about Ed. They essentially confirmed that she was in the show but there’s been no announced casting and she’s been completely absent from all the promotional material and trailers.

There's magic in it. I guess if you wanted to narrowly define witchcraft specifically as people doing stuff like standing over a cauldron then you could make a case it doesn't have any.

It's a Hallmark Channel show so...

If a friend asked me what it was like I'd say low budget and painfully corny. But it's also one of those things with a very specific target audience.

Someone predisposed to liking overly sentimental heart-on-its-sleeve stories would probably enjoy it, and anyone else could easily dismantle it. But I can see why doing that to a person actively watching the show could be interpreted as borderline trolling worthy of a disgusted look.

Sometimes a saccharine storyline about earrings is just a saccharine storyline about earrings.

I will say hearing season 2 of Locke & Key appeals to people who like the Good Witch makes me think I might not be that show's target audience anymore, however.

This looks better, much better. Optimism rising.

If you liked the new kevin smith Masters of the Universe don't watch the new trailer unless you want major spoilers. I wish I hadn't broke my rule of never watching trailers for things I know I will watch. The second half of season 1 drops Nov 23. I predict the response will be interesting. I know I was clearly wrong on some things and a lot of people with strong opinions were wrong about things. Cartoons, why so serious?

This times a thousand.

If you want the broad outlines of the plot 100 % spoiled, DO NOT WATCH!!

Not watching - thanks gang. My girls and i are super excited for pt. 2 and we don't want thpoilerth!

Finally watched Midnight Mass and I think it is one of the very best shows on Netflix.

It's not exactly a horror story. It's more a drama that uses horror elements for a very carefully and thoughtfully argued discussion of religion, faith, morality and mortality.

But, aside from that, it's still a top notch vampire story.

Watched Army of Thieves and liked it. The movie is more straight forward and the camera work is really good. The movie is a bit to long. They should have removed one job since it was just a repeat. Also I would have liked if the move didn't focus on one person. The cast is interesting but we only learn about one person. I did like that one person though.

I’m really enjoying Army of Thieves now. I wasn’t sure at first. Ludwig Dieter was the best thing about Army of the Dead so it’s fantastic to get more of that character. I agree about the rest of the cast being under utilised, especially Guz Khan who, since he became a contestant on Taskmaster, I’ve become a big fan of. Hopefully the movie will boost all their careers.

Army of Thieves was surprisingly dull, I thought. Entirely by the numbers, no wit or spark to it at all. I didn’t know it was connected to Army of the Dead which I haven’t seen.

Agreed, and I watched it because it was a backstory of the thief from that other movie.

Lucky for you. There are some redeeming qualities but overall, it's not a good movie at all. I would go so far as to say it's awful.

I added it to My List but dont' exactly have high hopes based on Army of the Dead.

The missus and I had plans to watch a spooky movie for Halloween last night but got derailed due to the insane amount of fireworks going off and spookin' the ever loving crap out of our dog. (FYI fireworks and firecrackers are illegal in my city). So we spent most of the evening consoling the poor pupper.

We're doing a make up session this week. The options we've narrowed down to based on Netflix Canada are:

Sinister
Us
Color Out of Space

Open to recommendations if anyone wants to throw their support behind one of the above or something else entirely!

If you want to watch Nick Cage go all bonkers Color out of Space is excellent. If you don't want to watch Nick Cage go way over the top, Color out of Space is terrible.

Us was... ok, I thought. It's no Get out. If you haven't seen Get Out, it's one of the better horror movies in the last decade.

Haven't seen Sinister, so I'll leave that for someone else to chime in on.

Sat down and watched "The silence" expecting something tense like A quiet place. It's terrible. At one point Tucci turns on a wood chipper and all the monsters flew into it. They should have just left it on and problem solved.

I have seen and enjoyed all three, so I would recommend them all. For what's worth, I've watched Sinister three times, I have watched Us only once (in theaters) but have been wanting to rewatch it ever since, and I have no desire to rewatch Color Out of Space. I hope that helps!

Thanks dudes. We've landed on Sinister. We'll probably do a delayed double bill with Us. And I'll probably end up watching Color Out of Space by myself!

It seems like you've already figured it out, but from someone who has seen all three. Sinister is probably the biggest crowd please, but the tone annoyed me. It told a really dark story, but would have moments of comic relief that killed things for me.

Us I have watched three times and like it more than Get Out. But I am probably in the minority.

Color Out of Space is definitely worth a look, but it wasn't as amazing as I was hoping for. It has Cage doing his thing.

Another Life - the second season - while still horribly derivative and unoriginal is a very considerable improvement on the first. It’s certainly not going to be winning any awards, and it would be nice to watch a sci fi show where the main antagonists are not

Spoiler:

homicida AIs

but it’s….. OK.

Also thought they handled the gender neutral character really rather well. Although I’m probably not really the right person to make an informed judgement on that.
