Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

Nevermind. I think I figured out what I'm going to do about the Expansion Pack and having a family account I'd like to downgrade. There isn't much that interests me yet in the Expansion Pack. I'll probably get the AC DLC on its own and if games like Paper Mario and San Francisco Rush show up on the Expansion Pack I'll bite then.

Oct 25 for Nintendo Online+.

Pricing announced as $50 for single and $80 for family. Animal Crossing DLC ($25 by itself) is bundled in. So that helps with the first year increase, especially if in family and get multiple copies of the DLC.

As someone that doesn’t care for AC, I’m not interested. $30 extra for a year for more of their drip feed of classic games? I’m gonna pass. I was already at the point of canceling the base membership.

I'd probably be feeling the same outrage as everyone else, and the price jump being more than double is incredibly shocking, but I'm constantly playing Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and Monster Hunter Rise with my friends online.

However, I am about ready to get some friends on my family account to cough up some twenties...

That family price without the Expansion Pack is so damn cheap it's incomparable. The price jump is nutso, even if it comes down to licensing costs, but I don't hanker to play N64 and Genesis games to the extent I'm plunking down a full games' price worth for em.

I'm not outraged, they didn't suddenly force everyone into this, but it's definitely not for me.

30 increase on solo, 45 on family.

50 vs 80. 20 vs 35. Hm

Seems like 40/70 would have been better. Double both. Oh well.

They’re both double plus $10, oddly enough.

$80? What an outrageous price to play N64 and Genesis games.

*spends $600 on Steam Deck to emulate games*

After a short time with the new OLED switch I can say I couldn't go back for handheld play. Between the slightly larger screen and the OLED technology it is clearly superior so I couldn't go back. Let many technology updates you don't miss it until you have it then suddenly going back feels impossible.
I remember thinking how I didn't really need two monitors at work but then I got them and suddenly I couldn't work on a single monitor setup anymore. It is kind of like that.

So I guess my recommendation wouldn't be - don't use one! (Unless you plan on getting one)

Got the call today that my new switch was in. It is very pretty. And now I won't have to fight with my son over who gets to play on the switch.

It is very much an indulgence to about another one and not sell this one used but it will be wonderful to be able to both be playing and not have to debate on how much time each person gets anymore

So new Switch Online options and higher price……but still 1990s level multiplayer and friending and voice? Pass.

Now, I know Nintendo has been pretty done deaf since, well, the mid-to-late 90's, at least, but this whole pricing scheme for that paltry offering really is something else. Not biting. I've got some of those N64 games already on the WiiU. They have to do a lot more to entice me and it's gonna take quite a ramp up in quality if they think I'm forking over.

The only appeal for me is online N64 play in some games, for nostalgia. Couldn’t do that on the Wii or Wii U.

If they add Wave Race 64 with online multiplayer I’d probably bite, if only for a month or two.

OLED Switch thoughts: the screen is marvelous, I like the feeling of the back of the unit and love the white color scheme. Only complaint is they made the power and volume buttons more flush so I have to get used to it.

Ha. If it was a sizeable chunk of the library or even just the first party stuff, it'd be tempting! Even just for the convenience. At least with the Steam Deck you can play what you want a lot more easily.

But like trueheart said the haphazard drip feed of games isn't much of a draw.

The SNES mini is a good budget option but once you get to N64 it’s hit or miss. You’d also want to connect a suitable controller.

Yep. The N64 bluetooth controllers pre-order sold out nearly immediately, and they're going for $120+ on eBay. IMAGE(https://emojipedia-us.s3.dualstack.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/thumbs/240/facebook/304/woman-facepalming_1f926-200d-2640-fe0f.png)

Just out of curiosity, does PS+ family sharing have a limit on consoles it can be shared across? Or number of accounts? Right now I got the family plan for Switch Online and it is spread across four separate devices. There's never any issues with anything, but then again, online purchases or save files aren't shared since everyone has their own account with purchases tied to them. It's basically there so everyone gets online play and the "virtual console" library.

Additionally, how many of you with PlayStations also have PS+, and of those that do, how often do you game online, and how often do you even bother playing (to completion, in particular) the PS+ freebies on offer? I'm curious to see if perhaps the harsh reaction is more a demographic thing than anything else.

Can’t speak for PS+ personally but Xbox Gold applies to any number of accounts on one “home” console and any console your main account is logged into so really only two consoles can play with it at the same time. Last I heard PS+ is roughly the same.

Some of the “games with gold” are good and end up being played but also I’m paying for Game Pass Ultimate that includes Xbox Gold so if you include those games then yes we play them every single day and I’m fact most Xbox games we play come from that plan. That being said the sticker price is certainly a lot higher than Switch online.

tl;dr:

One PS5 console and one PS4 console.

Freebies and discounts only apply to the primary account on each console. But other accounts on the same console also have access to multiplayer and can play games redeemed by the primary account.

I'd say the harsh reaction is that the assortment of games available is just not that good, varied, or recent compared to Sony or Microsoft even when factoring in the cost difference. I primarily have it for Cloud Saves and online functionality.

So this:

Is pretty disappointing. And the bulk of the Genesis titles are already in the Sega Genesis Collection you can buy for like $10-15 bucks whenever it goes on sale in the Switch shop, plus 40 more. And those you won't lose access to if you cancel your subscription.

I think we can safely bet additional Genesis titles will also just draw from that same collection, but at a random trickle defying logic to anyone outside of Nintendo.

PS Plus's selection isn't anything like Gamepass, but even it still has some big hitters that are fairly recent.

PS Plus+PS Now is about $80-90 if you buy codes from cdkeys, Gamepass Ultimate is about $140, and even if Nintendo ends up having a similar discount and it's $50-60 a year it's still the least compelling, IMO. Because on top of having a better selection in general both PS Now and Gamepass also even let you play games on PC.

But maybe it's just not in Nintendo's interest to offer more than a token effort to keep up or compete in that arena. Their games don't go on sale as much and sell pretty regularly anyway. So a $100 service that offers access to recent first party games and an assortment of other current titles probably just doesn't make sense.

If there was a way to get a family plan of Game Pass Ultimate that worked on 3 consoles in parallel I’d be jumping on it. So far I haven’t been willing to pay full price for one more console in the house tho.

That family plan part of Nintendo Online is nice.

Oh, I also bought a Binbok set at the same time, as well. There are a few different versions, but I went with the slimmer ones that have been recently updated.[/url]

So the Binbok set is going back. Slid them on and over the past 4 days, the colored ring LEDs have been lit up about 90% of the time. Maybe a bum pair, but keeping the other set.

Obra Dinn is on sale now. Small discount. Disco Elysium is out for $40.00.

Console Hackers Commandeer Switch Game’s Very Fast Sega Saturn Emulator

In the meantime, Switch enthusiasts have figured out how to exploit the emulator that runs the three late-‘90s games. Based on various clues, ZebraEngine is almost certainly a variant of SSF, a closed-source Saturn emulator that started development over 20 years ago. SSF has pretty good compatibility and performance, traits which have been borne out by GBAtemp members putting ZebraEngine through its paces.
The catch is that playing with the newly uncovered emulator requires either a launch-era Switch capable of running custom firmware or a hardware-modded Switch that can do the same, both of which are a little tricky to come by. Even so, it’s super cool to see Sega Saturn, an underappreciated, tricky-to-emulate system, unexpectedly running so darn well on Nintendo’s relatively low-powered portable. Makes you wonder what other feats might be possible.

Even if it's "just" an official emulation, I'd throw some money at an official release of games like Radiant Silvergun on Switch. And I actually own a Saturn still, ha.

As long as that purchase came with a general promise of publisher support, so we'll see if they follow through on addressing Cotton performance issues:

October 5, 2021 - Notice of input lag for “Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute”

We have confirmed that the following titles currently available on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 are experiencing input lag.
We are currently investigating this matter and plan to update each title on each console to improve the input lag.

I'm sure lots of people would go crazy if Sega ever released Panzer Dragoon Saga this way. And that includes myself, despite the fact that I've played it already.

Nintendo needs to make some rails shooter games for the Switch that allow you to use the Ringfit ring as your gun. Sure, also support other controllers and joycons but I want an expanded catalog that uses the ring.

This. This is pretty genius. How is it that a company like Nintendo doesn't build on ideas like this? Rather, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that ideas like this turn up here, but not in the company itself.

In any case, I'd be very much into it.

Star Fox Zero was a massive flop, even for Wii U standards.

To make a rail shooter that requires a peripheral? That's niche, I'm sure. Rail shooters are already pretty niche.

True so I hope it's just a possible control option in a game that supports all motion controllers.

I enjoyed the rail shooters I played on the Wii such as Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and Dead Space: Extraction but there weren't very many on that system.

Other ones that were good were Sin & Punishment: Star Successor and the arcade conversion of Ghost Squad, and I've heard good things about House of the Dead Overkill.

The thing that gave Ghost Squad legs was levels of difficulty that brought in branching paths and changed enemy placement and mix. I went in with fond memories of my time in the arcade and stuck around for the modifications they added.

Man the OLED… I am quite enjoying this screen.
