Elden Ring Catch-all

I’ve seen enough. I’m going to try to avoid seeing anymore.

Same here. Going in blind from this point on.

For those not avoiding spoilers (for as long as it remains available). Note: There's not really much to see here, just a bit of the world and some jumping.

All these people on Reddit were like "You can see how open the world is", but I'm just thinking "This looks exactly like Dark Souls, but with jumping.

For whatever reason, From are masters of making an area look a lot bigger than it turns out to be.

Also delayed a month or so:

Heh, the way they describe that delay...

Elden Ring will release on Feb 25, 2022, as the depth & strategic freedom of the game exceeded initial expectations.

It is just so good it couldn't possibly be ready for January! :S

As for open world... the less open world the game is, the better, imo. Can't wait to be proven wrong.

Edit: It is one week after Horizon Zero Dawn 2? Whyy. I hope that one is getting delayed due to being unable to contain that many dinosaur robots in a short month like February.

I'm actually happy it's being delayed, because it was going to be around the same time as PAX South, assuming that happens.

I likely wasn’t going to be able to play Elden Ring by then anyway so, selfishly, I’m happy I’d like to be experiencing it for the first time with everyone else. I missed that with Dark Souls.

15 min gameplay footage stream!

So, I've been pretty uninterested because the Souls formula has worn thin for me, but this is something of From's take on BotW? Okay, I'm interested. The art is really something else.

Looks interesting

The footage from Bandai Namco Europe's channel (skip the to the ~14:30 mark for the footage)

Collector's Edition stuff:

I'm not watching that, but also, yay.

Yeah, I didn't see anything revealed in the thumbnails so I figured it was safe to post without spoiler tags.

Yup, that looks like exactly the game I wanted it to be!

That’s about as Dark Souls as a game can be without being named Dark Souls 4

Looked like there was a lot more magic and stuff being used than I'd expect, but yeah, the parry is there and is definitely the same parry that's in all the Dark Souls games, as well as a bunch of other clearly identifiable stuff.

Nonetheless, I'm liking the look of it and wish it didn't get hit with a delay.

Yeah, which is what worries me. It certainly looks cool and interesting, but that Souls heritage is a big red flag for me. Definitely going to wait on reviews to see how much of that Souls frustration factor is present here.

Agreed.

Squint and some of the areas being shown from 14.30 onwards could have been repurposed from Demons Souls or Dark Souls (one or two).

As I get older, I increasingly long for more variety. I fell off of Dark Souls after number 2, when it felt to me like the games were getting longer without becoming any more interesting. I think the number of bosses increased from low 20s in Demons Souls to the low 30s by Dark Souls 2. And more and more boss encounters were multi-phase fights. It all left me a bit cold.

From what I can see, Elden Ring - with its open world - risks taking this trend even further.

Super happy if it returns more to Dark Souls than Bloodborne and Sekiro.

Not watching videos though.

Damn, we don't just both hail from the same planet, we share a brain!

I don't need to see this, or anything more than I've already seen. I will enjoy being surprised.

I will say that if they took some time off from the strict Dark Souls formula to make BB and Sekiro and are now returning refreshed to make the ultimate Dark Souls, that's pretty much my dream scenario.

Decided to take another glimpse at some of the preview gameplay after restarting Dark Souls Remastered again. Unlike the rest of you, I'm a bigger fan of how Bloodborne plays, and returning to Dark Souls had me groaning heavily at the atrociously worthless speed of the dodge roll. Elden Ring looks to actually have a decent dodge roll and recovery speed, so already I'm happier than if it really were just Dark Souls, But Open World.

Don’t get me wrong I think it looks amazing. I’m 100% on board for more Dark Souls.

Are you aware of the effect of equip load on roll speed? There's no quick sidestep in Dark Souls like in Bloodborne, but I don't think there's much difference between the roll speed between the two games at low equip load. The break points for dodge speed in Dark Souls are 25%, 50%, and 100%. Get under 50% at a minimum. If you like the fast roll, get under 25%.

Bloodborne is totally amazing, but it really is like Castlevania in that we all basically play the same type of character but with different weapons. The builds in Dark Souls are way more varied.

I'd love to see a BB2 if From makes it. If the rumors of Blue Byte making one are true, I'd be in very skeptical, wait and see mode.

One question for those who are partaking of Elden Ring media: Have they confirmed DS stlye jolly cooperation, or just Pokemon phantoms?

Jolly cooperation is shown in the gameplay trailer, in addition to your pokemons.

Yeah buddy already told me. It's far more RPG than action game in that encumbrance load thing. Honestly, though, Dark Souls is designed so heavily around shield use that I'd rather have a good shield with HP as back-up than worry about a dodge roll that the game isn't really designed around.

Honestly though, starting a new save in Dark Souls today and getting a bit further than last time, I think I'm getting a better understanding of why I liked Bloodborne so much in comparison, and some of it just has to do with placement of foes on the way to a boss. Also: Dark Souls is obsessed with tight corridors.

But hey, at least I beat those dumb gargoyles this time.

I like a lot about Bloodborne (especially the setting), and some parts of Sekiro.
Main thing that elevates Souls for me is the broader build choices; slow/fast weapons, shield, multiple magic paths. Instead of basically just slow/fast weapons in BB.

Best outcome might be if Elden Ring has even broader build choices, where you can also get the more offensive/fast playstyle from BB.

I still have a huge spot in my heart for PS3 Demon’s Souls
