Help me build my PC 2020 Catch All

Oh I misunderstood then. I'm okay going AMD, but yeah I basically know even less about that side. I used AMD once out of the ~10 PCs I've built and it had some random issues so I got a bit scared of using it again. Having said that, it was over 5 years ago now so probably not fair to be holding onto that experience.

So the EVGA notification I signed up for in June notified me today. I have 20 hours to buy 12G-P5-3657-KR, their 3060xc card for $400

Since I already got a 3060 on Newegg shuffle a while back I don't think I need 2. Do I sell my gently used Asus one and buy this instead? Do I sell this brand new one?

Any goodjers desperate for a 3060 today? I'd rather just get it to one of y'all than try to scalp it, knowing someone will use it. Got about 18 hours to figure this out..

Buy it, sell to someone you know. Whether here or elsewhere.

I can't fault you for flipping it on ebay or whatever as that card is going for $600-$700 sold.

Dang, if it was a 3070, I'd be all over that for my brother.

Somebody here has to want a 3060.

I agree with garion though. I'd buy it and if nobody here is a taker, go ahead and eBay it.

May I ask, what was your original timestamp for the card?

10:49 AM PST today. So 20 hours from then. Under 15 hours from now.

Signed up back on June 29.

Looks like you can't even sign up anymore for at least the last month.

I'm waiting on the 3060 black haha just 8 more minutes God dang it.

I have two 3080 wait list signups that are now each over a year old.

Sorry Stele, I meant what was your registration timestamp for that card? You can find it here: https://www.evga.com/community/myNot....

Thanks!

Yeeeeah I still have a queue entry active from October 8th for a 3080 FTW3. Pretty sure they're just... not making that card really.

I don't need it, I already got my FTW3 Ultra and I already passed on one 3080 XC Black Edition queue purchase to someone else, but I know a few people looking for a card and I keep thinking maybe someday they'll hit me for that regular FTW3.

If you watch the Moore's Law is Dead channel, he has a recent talk on how Nvidia is happily throwing their weight around to keep prices high. It is suspected that once their current stock is sold, they are not going to make any more since they've hit/exceeded their margins already and are perfectly fine waiting until the 4000 series is ready.

They are fine with the price hikes and won't even bother in the future with artificial MSRPs. So it is rumored that they want low end GPUs to sell for $400-500. The 4080 will also supposedly retail for $2000. And gamers keep gobbling them up so they feel justified.

I know it is just rumors. But the fact that it sounds like something they would do, you shouldn't be buying from them.

You act like there's a better option.

AMD cards are just as overpriced, and they perform worse. I got my 3080 FTW3 Ultra for its then MSRP of like $809. A 6700XT is $800 in stores. That's a noticeably worse videocard for the same money. No thanks.

If you want to bail on PC gaming, by all means do so, but you aren't going to avoid a sh*tty videocard market even if you try to avoid Nvidia.

Both Intel entering the GPU space and AMD's APUs will add more competition. Will that help, time will tell.

I still have zero faith in Intel on the GPU end of things, but if they can disrupt the midrange and below that would certainly be nice.

But I also have no faith they will somehow maintain any kind of supply.

If intel can get out of its own way, I think they can disrupt the midrange. ARC is supposed to be within a few points of a 3070. If they can get that down to $350 or below it is an instant purchase for me.

The 6600 is available at much closer to MSRP. But $350 for 5700xt performance is too high. It needs to be in the $275 or below range IMHO.

What I want may not come to pass for years. But believe it or not, I can subsist on my aging RX 580.

I got my 3080 by getting an Alienware Aurora wrapped around it. Took about… 5 or 6 weeks? I think. For me, well worth it, not just the card but a fantastic system wrapped around it.

Just a thought.

PC building is dead, long live prebuilts.

Well, that and I’m old and after speccing and building several dozen over the years, I’m tired of it. Waiting a year for parts kind of pushed my last button, and I realized if anyone can buy enough to have them in stock, it’s Dell.

Seriously, that's my takeaway from the GPU shortage.

So, we're finally admitting that PCs are just gaming consoles with more I/O ports? I'm cool with that.

No, because they are still configurable in many more ways.

My PS5 can run Unity games, but the Unity IDE not so much.

My new PC is a Legion pre-built and it's great. It cost me about the same as it would have to build one without the hassle of actually having to build one. I think I'm officially done building PC's. My old PC is having issues, it has a 1060 so I was just thinking I might buy cpu/mobo/ram and build a new one but now I'm thinking I'll just buy a cheap pre-built and call it good.

I think it needs to be said that buying a prebuilt does not remove the need or desire to custom build...

I am currently using a pre-built I bought in 2014. With a new video card, an extra SSD and HDD, a new MB and CPU, and new RAM. Oh and a new monitor, webcam, headset, 2 new routers, wireless charger, and on and on...
(new desk, new desk organizer...)

The PC of Theseus.

Oops. I forgot that I replaced the power supply too. Perhaps a CPU cooler or two.
I think the only original part is the case

This thread is depressing. I've been looking for a 3080 at a reasonable price for most of this year.

It's hard to assess, but it looks as though prices may be easing a little bit. The scalpers seem to be having more trouble getting 2x MSRP right now.

I think I'm with you at this point. I've spent this summer thinking about my rig's overdue CPU refresh. Based upon some minimal research, the price of one of those Alienware pre-builts isn't far off the cost to update CPU/MoBo/Ram/Disk one my existing rig. Plus I'll be able to go to a 3080 (or similar) as well.

I do love Alienware. I've had one of their gaming laptops since 2008 (currently on #3) and they make quality builds.

Express delivery Dec 15, so about 8 weeks out.

One nice thing about buying a pre-built is being able to keep my current rig for a server. Or hand it off to a friend.

Alienware also, importantly, has great tools and support (excepting McAffee, of course, dump that trash immediately) and lets you add stuff or change out parts without voiding the warranty or support. So you can add in extra drives or upgrade your video card and they will still support it. And the last few years, the build quality has been *tight*.

Basically you get it, you plug in all your peripherals, and boot right up into the end of Win 10 install. Then you can start laying on your own software.

I've given up on getting a 3080. 4080 is my new hope.
Not going to pay 2x price, out of principle if nothing else.

Alienware also seems like paying 2X price in a different way.
