[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

Why isn't "Tupac still alive" in that link section?

Well now I have a lot of things to carefully Google. Like... Denver Int'l Airport?

The Denver Post has you.

I took a screenshot of the bottom triangle for that reason.

Finland doesn't exist?

I would google, but I'm on my work machine and don't want to trip into something that would get me a meeting with HR.

Apparently it started as a comment on a six-year-old Reddit thread about the weirdest thing thing that your parents taught you. The comment was completely made up.

The TL;DR of the conspiracy theory is that way back in 1918 Japan partnered with Russia to 'create' the country of Finland where only ocean existed. Japan wanted this because, as a nation of sushi lovers, they wanted more fish but were constantly hampered by those pesky early 20th century environmentalists. So Japan told Russia that if they were given access to that ocean where they could fish that they'd give Russia--who was starving--a portion of their catch as payment.

But how did Japan get all the fish from non-Finland to Japan? Easy. The Russians built the Trans-Siberian Railroad to ship all the fish to Japan. (Just ignore the fact that the Trans-Siberian Railroad starts in Moscow and doesn't reach Finland, that at the time Russians used a different railway gauge than the Fins so any train starting in Finland would have be off-loaded to a Russian-gauge train, that the entire trip took seven days which meant all the fish had to be refrigerated with ice (and topped off every day), etc.)

All the fish shipments were disguised as Nokia products because "Japan is apparently one of the worlds largest importers of Nokia products despite the fact that 'nobody there owns a Nokia phone' apparently." (Also ignore the fact that Nokia didn't make phones until the 80s and that in the early 20th-century they were primarily a wood pulp and rubber producer.)

The UN got in on the scam by convincing Finnish people that they lived in Finland and not in the eastern part of Sweden, the western part of Russia, or the northern part of Estonia like they really did. Pilots flying into Helsinki (which is really in Sweden) were bribed to keep their mouths shut. And the UN secretly altered every satellite image, drawing in a landmass where none existed.

Finland's name, of course, is a subtle acknowledgment of the entire conspiracy: fish have fins and the land was made up.

A great story. Like flat earth, it's so easily disprovable by, you know, going there. But it's far enough away for the Americans that would believe such a tale to never try, especially since they're the same people who've likely never traveled outside their home state.

I was just this week talking to a man who'd been to Finland recently. How do the conspiracists deal with a credible counter-claim, with pictures, standing before them?

I’m having a hard time figuring out how #FreeBritany could be a conspiracy theory. Is there a vocal minority who believe the whole thing is a hoax? I can see how misogynists might think the whole thing is a non-issue. Do some people think Brit is lying?

Initially, people either didn't know how bad her situation was or thought she really was crazy and needed to be looked after. So they thought #freebtriney was just an obsessed fan conspiracy and she didn't need to be freed. It's only in the past few years that it started being taken seriously by most people.

That should really be Americans busting out of Odin's palace. Most of our damage has been self-inflicted.

Oh! So it’s an example of how you shouldn’t say sh*t about sh*t that you don’t understand. Ok. I get it now.

I think that *if* it was categorized that way a while back, then it was appropriately categorized; "We've got questions" says to me that unlike something like MK Ultra, nothing has yet been proven, but unlike something like pizzagate there is reason to have legitimate suspicions and concerns. I think just about everything in the "things that actually happened" category once belonged in the "We've got questions" category, but then the questions were answered with a big YES. Some of the things in the other direction may have belonged there too until the NO answers came in (though certainly many of them never had legitimate questions).

The list of politicians I wouldn't throw in would be shorter.

I've used that Good Place gif a lot this weekend. Well, every October since season 1 actually.

The party of "Limited Government" LOVES Government force, but only when it's used to do things they like. For example, preventing small businesses run by immunocompromised owners from setting a workplace rule to ensure their staff is masked and vaccinated. But they can -not- bake cakes for the gays all they want. Freedom!

So any time someone says 'I believe in limited government that's why I vote Republican' you can just know they're an asshole up front who votes for a party of government control on the regular. It's not about -whether- there's government control, it's what that control is used for.

I would not be surprised if this was fake but I think it might be true at least in terms of what allows fascism to fourish.
