NFL 2021: The Week 5 thread

I hate being a Browns fan.

Maybe not their D ... /shudder. But Justin Herbert, my goodness.

Who would everyone choose as your #2?

For the longest time mine was MIA because my brother loved their teal unis, Marino was a likable star to me, and warm weather was better than Alaska.

But now I kinda like the Ravens because of the emphasis on D, tasteful hype featuring Wire stars, Ed Reed, and the emphasis on D. Did I mention the emphasis on D?

Dolphins are still my #2 but I dunno. How about you guys?

I would have to pick the Lions. First to balance out the Patriots (lol) and second because I usually go to Detroit for Thanksgiving so I've been to a couple of their games.

I hope the team is an utter disaster on Sunday, against a Titans team that just lost to the Jets.

This may be the first week in which I actively cheer for a Jaguars loss since week 8 2013*. Because if they win after this hell week, it's going to paper over the issues and help drag things out longer. If the week of distractions is followed by the team being wretched on Sunday, it might spark change.

(*: when the Harbaugh 49ers played against a going-nowhere Gus Bradley Jags team. I cheer for whichever team needs the win for a playoff run - in 2017 it was the Jags, who of course got torched by Jimmy G and lost anyway.)

I know it's early, but it happened and for now Urban "finger -> butt" Meyer still has his job. Are they really going to keep him going into the London game? If they lose, are they going to ditch him on the tarmac at Heathrow?

Since when did Chucky the doll start crossing the Uncanny Valley?

That was a rough ending to a very good game.

Does the Pope get fired after the plane lands? Nvm, they were in Jacksonville.

I give it three more losses.

My god the Chiefs' defense is bad. The Bills definitely deserve credit but they're getting killed by simple plays

Will the Chiefs really start out 2-3 this year? Crazy.

For me it was Pittsburgh, back in the Franco Harris/Lynn Swann/Steel Curtain era. Franco went to the same local high school as my uncle (a few years earlier).

A weather delay at an outdoor stadium? That makes more sense than last week I guess

Has the league figured out mahomes?

Ouch, I just saw the promo for next Sunday's game. Acccording to the infographic, it's the battle of DK Metcalf vs. TJ Watt, because neither team has a healthy QB. I don't know how bad things are in Seattle, but it could be an ugly game with the number of players that aren't playing at 100%. I'm not sure I can name a starter on the Steelers that hasn't been on the injury list this year.

Yep. Clang it through Tyreek's hands, ezpz.

MY jaw literally dropped open. That is an all-time terrible Roughing the Passer call.

I just saw this on Reddit and I think it's pretty funny. On Thursday, Geno Smith took the all-time lead in passing yards for the 2013 draft class after subbing in for Wilson. Today, Mike Glennon subbed in for Daniel Jones and re-took the lead.

"Siri, show me the saddest leaderboard in sports history."

Doesn’t mean his plane from C-Bus won’t land.

Maybe the Bills (Carolina North) or the Steelers (Mike Tomlin is a W&M grad) or the Ravens (because I have family in Md and they're Ravens fans). But I can't really muster more than an "Oh, that's nice" when any of these teams win.

I've only got brain space enough for one team. And my heart couldn't take two losses per weekend. Besides, having to root for a team with HEY DARNOLD under center has me questioning many of my life choices, mostly the one that has me devoting 3+ hours every Sunday to one of the dumbest teams in football.

Trey Lance may miss time with a knee sprain.

I swear to god, if this team drafted Trey AND kept Jimmy and STILL has to put Nate Sudfeld on the mother f*cking playing field...

Did I at least get the quote right?

You did indeed, except I didn't bother with any punctuation.

2019, Week 1, after Nick Foles threw a TD to Chark on the second offensive possession of the season, and then died from the hit he took on that play.

Gruden said other things in his emails. The NYT left the homophobic stuff he said in without censoring, so CW applies. But, lucky us he had other things on his mind:

In numerous emails during a seven-year period ending in early 2018, Gruden criticized Goodell and the league for trying to reduce concussions and said that Eric Reid, a player who had demonstrated during the playing of the national anthem, should be fired. In several instances, Gruden used a homophobic slur to refer to Goodell and offensive language to describe some N.F.L. owners, coaches and journalists who cover the league.
That same year, Gruden was sent a link to an article about N.F.L. players calling on Goodell to support their efforts promoting racial equality and criminal justice reform. Gruden had advice for Goodell:

“He needs to hide in his concussion protocol tent,” he wrote.

Having a quarterback is overrated, tbh.

Perfect 3rd and Long call against a blitzing defense running man.

It's a good thing he's not coaching the team with the league's first openly gay active roster player OH WAIT...

So does Gruden overtake Urban Meyer as the new frontrunner for coaches headed out the door?

Shad Khan is still figuring out how to get rid of Urban Meyer for cause. Mark Davis' dad invented terminating coaches "for cause" and getting away with it.

Patrick Queen is a bust.

Oweh isn't.

I actually had this thought over lunch about the Urban Meyer situation and the thought line ended with "Maybe Shad Khan should ask Mark Davis for advice."
