2021/22 Soccer Thread: It's Euro 2020 until it becomes 2021

Whatever your criticisms of him, dude's going to be the best, most consistent goalscorer they've had since.....

........well, since him.

Don't get me wrong, defending is an important part of the game.

However, the game is way more fun when both teams can't defend. A delightful day of results. I missed half the goals watching the other half of the goals.

Excuse me? There's a club called Sheriff? And their logo is a sheriff's badge.

*Does some googling*

Fotbal Club Sheriff, commonly known as Sheriff Tiraspol or simply Sheriff, is a Moldovan football club based in Tiraspol, a city located in the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic

Interesting. Tell me more.

Tiraspol is the capital of Transnistria, a breakaway state in Moldova, where it is the second largest city. The city is located on the eastern bank of the Dniester River. Tiraspol is a regional hub of light industry, such as furniture and electrical goods production

I played disc golf the other day with a guy whose parents were immigrants from Moldova. He didn't believe me at first when I said "Ah, Moldova, I know it well."

I scared the living daylights out of someone online recently, as they were not expecting an American to know that Debrecen even exists, which I only know about thanks to FM.

The NY Times had an interesting piece on Sheriff. Reads to be less of a fairy tale than one would hope.

Have we said that Leon Bailey's gonna be a great bit of business for Villa? Cuz I think he'll be.

Also, what a sh*t weekend for everton, huh?

Ivan Toney = Good

Chelsea = Title contenders?

Liverpool = Will their lack of transfers catch up?

Also, I'm not quite convinced that Ronaldo is ultimately a hindrance to ManU.... but I do have questions.

I might watch this later, but I've never understood why German clubs sell their best players to Bayern so cheaply. I'd think there would be other clubs interested.

But maybe the players are always almost out of contract and I don't notice because I don't follow German football.

A few days late, but delightful.

I've come to love CONCACAF.

So…the Vice President of Suriname, who is 60 years old, is PLAYING in Concacaf League against Olimpia tonight, captaining the team he owns.
Video was streamed tonight from Olimpia's locker room that appears to show Ronnie Brunswijk giving people in the locker room cash. He also leaves with an Olimpia shirt.
...
It appears to now be deleted but was streamed by someone Wikipedia describes as a "Surinamese football club owner, entertainer, convicted drug dealer and politician"

I'm starting to understand the appeal.

In other news, Messi plays by himself.

TBD on the penalties which... I think we know where that is going.

Well, we definitely do now.

Some world class sh*thousery before the kick too, as Emi Martinez (who has prior form) got right in Bruno's face and told him he should let Ronaldo take the kick.

Brentford's really gonna make a go of it, huh?

Also, Fulham's draw today was disappointing, but this was pretty awesome.

It was a cracking game but really Liverpool should have put it to bed about half way through the second half. But full credit to Brentford, they are the new Leeds.

This first half was the best half of Arsenal football I've watched in years.

I think the lesson here is that Arsenal and Tottenham are going to have sh*t seasons.

Tomiyasu has been the biggest surprise for me.

I was happy to see Bellerin go but how quickly they found a replacement that has just slotted in is impressive.

I'm willing to chalk up Arsenals situation to Brentford is apparently decent + they started the season with Covid.

Brighton, Palace, Villa, Leeds (cup) and Leicester at the end of October. Good little stretch for Arteta to build up some goodwill. Really no excuses now that the new players have games and there's no injuries.

Bout time Messi reminded us that while it'll take some adjusting, he's still f*cking Messi.

Sheriff's 2nd goal is a beauty.

So, once again City shown up in Europe - a team with no pedigree.

Liverpool pulverize what is supposed to be a good Porto side. Curtis Jones was quite superb tonight, if you get a chance check out his performance.

And Sheriff Tiraspol, CL newcomers, beat Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu. Oooof.

There's a new Sheriff in town!

I'll see myself out.

This is a lie. Despite Portugal momentarily surpassing France in the ranking this year, overall our teams haven't been particularly, uhm, compelling as of late.

Though they aren't a Cinderella team, it's nice to see Real Madrid lose to a team that wouldn't have come close to being allowed in the Super League.

Also I'm hopping on the Ajax bandwagon:

https://nograssintheclouds.substack....

Except, here’s the thing. This year’s Ajax? They might not only be just as good as the now-legendary 2018-19 team; no, they might be even better

I know the transfer is basically Everything That's Wrong With Modern Football...

...but I was happy to see this.

I'd like to say it's sad to see both Real and Barca getting beaten in the Champions League, but it isn't, so I won't.

Bayern defeating Dynamo soundly today as well! My father in law, a huge Sporting FC fan, probably isn't happy with the Benfica win.
