NFL 2021: The Week 1 thread

I dunno if beating the Lions by 8 points after losing a starting RB and CB is good for the power rankings, even if you have a bajillion RBs.

I mean, if beating Dallas at home by 2 thanks to 3 missed Dallas kicks and uncalled offensive pass interference is still good enough for Tampa to hang onto #1...

There's several rankings that I dislike simply because the win/loss record is 90% of their rankings. Also, I think coming out of the game healthy matters.

Another disappointing loss by the Giants.

Yep. I might break my record and stop watching them by Week 3 this season!

The Offense can't move the ball consistently, and therefore cannot rack up points. Seeing Saquon return to the Team, and deliver on 26 yards (on 10 carries) was pretty sobering. As was the fact that Sterling Shepherd - who I like and rate as a Number 2 - was the leading receiver. I expect they'll be at, or near, the bottom of the scoring table after Week 18.

As a result, the Defense is being asked to do a job that it simply isn't up to doing: spend more than half the game on the field, while successfully holding their opponents to punts and field goals.

It's deja vu all over again. They draft. They trade. They recruit veterans on large salaries. And the Team gets a little bit worse. Is this what it feels/felt like to be a Lions or Browns fan?

So I'm guessing the consensus power rankings tomorrow will be:

1. Tampa Bay
2. Kansas City
3-6. The NFC West

Buffalo, Green Bay, Baltimore, and Cleveland all sliding down after starting 0-1.

On one hand, the Browns gave your Number 2 team everything they wanted and more. On the other hand, the last 10 minutes involved a ridiculous pass that in against any other team is an interception, a fumble from the punter that lead to a super short field and a KCTD, and Baker throwing an int trying to throw the ball out of bounds.

Welp. I was close.

CBS's Power Rankings.

1. Tampa
2. KC
3-5. 3/4ths of the NFC West
6. New Orleans
7. Pittsburgh
8. The rest of the NFC West

Yup, and Tampa will stay on top until they lose a game, regardless of how well (or not) they may be playing at that time.

Oof.

Is Stanley rusty, not fully healthy, or something else?

He's super rusty coming off ankle injury. Didn't actually practice until late in the summer. Probably is still getting used to being upright.

I'd give him a couple weeks before raising the alarm.

Ravens receivers channeling N'Keal Harry and the Patriots 2020 receiving corpse had Lamar holding onto the ball for WAY too long. Bet Jonathan Ogden would've allowed 5 pressures when your QB is holding it for 4-5s every play

CNN popped up in my feed talking about Carl Nassib being the first openly gay person to play in a (real) NFL game. So, props.

Spoiler: it's the seachickens.

Apparently 5 Saints coaches tested positive for Covid. All the staff are vaccinated though. (No clarity on the players)

So I'm essentially just waiting for the update of how many Packers have covid.

Because if you go to Florida. Covid.

Edit: up to 8 with 1 player. It's like it's super contagious or something.

Lamar's time-to-throw this week was indeed very long: 3.04 seconds, second slowest in the league behind only Baker's 3.09. So you're right that that's definitely a factor in the strain on Stanley and the rest of the line.

You've pointed the finger at the WRs, and I wonder how much of it is on them, how much is on Lamar (is he missing opportunities on quick reads?), and how much is on the playcalling (are they not giving him any quick reads?). Always hard to see much useful about routes and coverages from the broadcast TV angle.

Whatever the root issues are, they gotta get the ball out of Lamar's hands faster than that. Hollywood needs to be a terror on some short throw + YAC yards concepts, but his YAC was some of the worst this week, at minus-2.6 YAC Above/Below Expectation. (Watkins, on the other hand, was 7th best in this metric this week).

Up next for the Saints: Carolina.

Speaking of, the Panthers just cut their new kicker (who missed an XP on Sunday) so they wouldn't have to give a 7th-round pick to the Giants. Carolina might be the pettiest team in the entire league.

A couple Jaguars podcasters are claiming they're hearing a bunch of "it's real" claims from their sources with regards to all the Urban Meyer drama.

Whether or not it results in him leaving during the season, it's clear that a lot of people think there's no future to this regime.

To which I again say, GOOD.

Apparently there's a lot of clashing between Meyer and Bevell, at which I'm just pointing a phone camera and screaming WORLDSTAR.

Meyer's stay in Jacksonville is going to make Saban's time in Miami look Belichickian by comparison.

A 15-17 record would indeed be Belichickian compared to what the Jags have been churning out.

Pittsburgh was on top of the rankings for 11 weeks in 2020, because wins and losses. :/
Basically, check this weeks rankings, see if PIttsburgh is ranked above Buffalo, and find new rankings if they are.

Yep, Hurricane Ida strikes again. It's more than just a Florida vaccination rate joke though, the saints have had to relocate. The packers are just visiting for a weekend and probably won't have a giant covid spike.

The new Tuesday night tradition: The Week 2 thread

Von Miller approves.
