Arkane's time loop adventure features two rival assassins on a "stunning, retro-future, 60s-inspired" island. Dishonored by way of Groundhog Day by way of James Bond. Shenanigans aplenty.

This might be the first time I preordered a game partly in a conscious effort to help the developers. I love Arkane and immersive sims and don’t want to see either go away.

Saw some positive reviews this morning. Need to dig up links again. But I'm thinking sooner rather than later. It is my birthday this week after all, can buy it if I want.

That's my thinking too. Happy birthday!

for like an hour more, ps+ members get %10 off. That convinced me to order. downloading now.

This was really the only game I was looking forward to this year (because I forgot about Psychonauts 2 until a couple days before it came out). I love immersive sims and, thinking about it recently, I think Dishonored is my favorite series ever. Arkane will probably need to put out two or three stinkers in a row for me to not buy their games day one at this point.

I've been playing Red Dead Redemption 2 since July. I thought I would be done with it last week so I'd be able to play this right away. But, I apparently had 20+ more hours left. I still have like six or seven story missions left. Hopefully, I can knock those out quickly tomorrow so I can get to Deathlooping soon.

I only had the chance to play the tutorial area, but so far I'm liking it.

I never pre-order, or buy games at launch, or at full price.

Except for Dishonored 2.

And now Deathloop - looking forward to this. Hope my pc can keep up.

This is a good conversation.

They perhaps start to give too clear of an impression of where the story goes after an hour or so.

Tagging for when I have a PS5.

I got super stuck on the third area because the tool tip to “hack through glass” is a semitransparent white text that I totally missed the first time I was around the level.

I also discovered something very interesting around hacking a security relay:

Spoiler:

I hacked into the 2-bit relay and despite having literally murdered the entire area because I was stuck, activating the relay caused endless enemy waves to spawn in the area.

This game is already in my head. I played about 3 hours last night. I got through the first set of missions, "The longest day".

Last night my dreams where structured like the game, where I was looking for things at different times to know they would be there next time.

I used to dream about games a lot. Haven't got that deep into something lately.

The OP title tickles me so.

I've been taking picture of my computer screen and writing notes in a journal. This game is rad.

Just solved the first part of the Updaam safe puzzle and even for a pixel hunt it was fun! (now stuck on the second and third part but think I'll come back to it later in the day)

Man I need to work my pile so I can get to this game. Can't wait!

A quick recommendation: play through the game until you unlock the infusion ability. Really not worth exploring everything everywhere as this is a game changing mechanic

Take it from someone who looted the entire library before learning infusion

Just up to that bit now. Been plowing through missions with minimal exploration since I figure that'll all come through natural progression. I'm really digging it so far.

I was a bit confused about the loop stuff (still am) because I died in the first afternoon but just restarted that mission. I figure the first couple hours are all tutorial and introduction and once I get cranking on the 8 then the real restart day stuff will kick in.

I got a kill on Julianna and picked up her ability but it disappeared after I died. That was a fun 30 seconds.

Initial impressions:

I really like the VA
Very cool vibe
Holy Crap you die fast
I already want to savor every moment and take my time with this game

These are pretty much my exact same first impressions.

I turned off subtitles after the first time they spoiled a good line from Colt. I can't help but read ahead when they're there. Colt and Julianna are killing the VA so far.

I can already tell there's a lot to explore in the levels, but I think I'll be following the advice here and marching forward with the main quest for a while before coming back to explore more thoroughly.

Considering doing the same after seeing this show up every time you kill someone.

The AI isn't very smart though. Enemy detection seems much more forgiving than Dishonored. Seems the vision cone on enemies is about 15-20 yards and past that you can just walk in front of them no problem. It's also a very viable strategy to just yolo out of fights. My first attempt through the library in Uupdam I had 3-4 retreats to a side corridor and the AI couldn't figure out I was there and left after 20-30 seconds.

Apparently there's optional PvP. Another player can take over enemy role and hunt you. Reminds me of that old Demon's Souls boss.

The graphics card market really needs to settle down. This game is apparently using almost twice the RAM that my card has only low settings. It's running fine for now but I imagine I won't be able to play for long chunks without issues.

I'll chime in with my initial impressions. Firstly the amazing level design from Dishonored/Prey is carried across beautifully. There are alternative routes everywhere in the game, you can go above, around or through apartments/buildings to get to your goal.

The structure is very compelling, I think it's a stroke of genius that the visionaries can be beaten to obtain their slabs (that are basically their special abilities, like shift). The really cool thing is that to level up these abilities you kill the visionaries (or Juliana) a second, third time etc

The different locations in the island contain so many locked doors, keypad codes for doors or safes, buildings or walls you simply can't scale etc without going to other areas to find out that information or gain new abilities.

Juliana has killed me once, I was in an apartment when she appeared outside on the rooftops. I was strafing in & out of cover, shooting at her out the window. Her shot was very good though & she had one of her henchmen with her, ultimately I fell. Revenge is sweet though, on a subsequent run I was stealthily making my way around, I had two turrets that I picked up & put on the major routes to the right & left of me. One way was a road, the other an alleyway. The turret on the road had already taken out an Eternalist. I was close by when Juliana invaded the game, it turns out she was around the far side of the buildings were my turret was pointing straight down the alleyway. On her way to my destination she ran into a wall of bullets by my hacked little buddy, I went around & collected my reward of her glitched out body.

The only big complaint so far is the A.I it's beyond dumb at times. I was in a laboratory, went out one of the exits where a bunch of enemies were outside. I shot one, others seen me & went into full alert mode. I retreated inside the building & jumped up on the high wall that was just through the door. I was waiting to pounce but a couple of the enemies were just running around outside the door. There have been other instances were enemies just cannot properly traverse their environment. It's a pity but the rest of the game is awesome so far.

I've only played the first real map (where you have to get to your apartment). It was hilarious when the hit squad that was sent after

Spoiler:

I checked my computer

just stood outside the window saying "Hello?" until they got bored. I'm guessing there will be a story reason for why they're all so dumb. The AI in Dishonored wasn't this dumb.

Yep totally the same for me. I'd be amazed if it was a story reason but it's feasible nonetheless. Yeah the AI in Dishonored was much smarter.

Ok. This game is pretty neat.

Initially I was high on the game going in just due to the developers. Then soured a bit on it as I started playing. The first hour or two you're basically directed exactly where to go. I really like to explore areas at my own pace but the devs who created the game are obviously want you to go from point A to B. And they basically tell you not to explore that you'll have plenty of time later.

Then just as you get going the game stops as you have to read static screens of text to explain a game mechanic. And that frequently happens during the first day. Really kills the pacing - I just want to play the dang thing!

Half of that time I didn't know what the heck was going on and really didn't get a feel of the plot or what I'm supposed to be doing. I just basically blindly followed the prompts.

So when you complete the first loop I was really hoping the game would open up. Allow me to explore the game. But no the second day you're also in 'training mode' but nowhere near as bad. So I initially I wasn't happy that I'm still somewhat roped in. But by the end of that second short day a lightbulb went off and the game clicked.

I love the concept and the mechanics of this game of collecting powers, figuring out what order to kill people to achieve a perfect day, and how zones change depend on the time you're there. This is going to be a real fun puzzle to unravel.

Played a little bit, haven’t really got into things yet. I did get a good laugh out of the door code achievement.

Just had my first (and definitely the most frustrating crash). Was gunning for Frank in his club for a second time, after I incredibly stupidly died after killing him the first time*. It was a lot of fun exploring the level again with all the map knowledge I had gained the first time. Had a Julianna invasion pop up but the club has SO MANY TURRETS and of course I had hacked them all, she pretty much vapourized on spawn. Dropped a really nice machine gun and a new slab I hadn't seen before. Cleared out the rest of the club, hacked some more turrets, and was all ready to go blast Frank. Open up his recording studio and start firing away..... Freeeeeeeze...... Error message........ FFFUUUCCCKKK. Not only did I fail a second time but I effectively lost all the cool gear from the Julianna I killed and for absolutely no fault of my own. That one was really frustrating and now I'll have to go do it all A THIRD time (including all the story bits and discovery pieces because those don't translate over on crash). Ugh. Love the game but this one hurts.

*So how did I horribly die the first time? That involves a mechanic spoiler below:

Spoiler:

One thing I love about the game is how they strategically take away your powers and force you to play in a new way while still giving plenty of tools. I'm still early enough in the game that I don't really have great slab powers so the ClassPass of the club (a 10/10 iconic name for a snooty club wristband!), which takes away all your slab powers including respawn abilities, doesn't really impact me too much other than making death much much more scary and punishing. The benefits of the ClassPass are you don't have to spend half your time in the club hacking doors and on my first run I hadn't found any of the alternate entrances yet which pretty much forced me to take the ClassPass. I cleared the complex without too much difficulty, found Frank's studio and went up to his bedroom to find to my surprise he had a ClassPass station. Before I took him out I decided I would take off the ClassPass just in case. Turns out I didn't need it as he absolutely melted. Then for some DUMB REASON I decided I'd finish clearing out the club and there was a door I couldn't hack and put the ClassPass back on. Open the door - turret aimed straight at it - can't hack it because it isn't moving so I try to shoot it out. NOPE! Two entire seconds in the turret fire and I'm dead. Losing 30 minutes of progress and feeling incredibly stupid.

I had the same issue staygold, doing super well in updaam, had cleared out the library which is teeming with enemies & I go across to

Spoiler:

Colt's Apartment to open the safe for a second time & just after doing that the game froze on me

I'm loving the game, there seems to be 4 different times of the day that you can visit locations & it feels fairly different when going in at night vs the morning. Different enemy placements, places that were completely empty during the night are populated during the day. Night also feels more dangerous, a bit like Dying Light but not quite as lethal & urgent. Still though it's a completely different feel to updaam & there are different events that happen dependant on when you go in. It's so cool to experience.

I'm starting to map out the layout of updaam in my head now too, which is always very satisfying. The expertly crafted areas make this process a joy.

I'm really busting to get back at this tonight.
