Painting Miniatures

Finished painting up my first WH40K 2000pt army, Imperial Knights.

Looking good!

Dang. I'm just trying to visualize the amount of Ork boys that'd be.

Hopefully green paste after my Knights are done with them.

My first greenskin

I bought the Kruleboyz half of Dominion off a friend when it first released but haven't had the time or inspiration to start them until today. I decided to stick with a pretty standard colourscheme, but make them desert-y instead of swampy.

A little low on contrast, but I think I like the grimier look

That HUGE box of Blacklist Minis has finally made it across from China and is getting delivered next tuesday (!) I am most excited.

I actually also backed their second kickstarter for ANOTHER massive box of minis AND also splurged on their gothic horror mini box at the same time so I have TWO MORE huge boxes of minis showing up next year at some point, but i reckon this box will last me a while so no rush!

I joke! Have fun with all those minis! Sometimes it's nice to have options when painting.

I really need to get in on one of these. So many figs for such a low price.

Sweet army, Nevin.

You may like it; I LOVE it.

I have waaay too many minis and hardly any of them are painted. I'm sure no one else has this problem.

(pauses for the laughter to die down)

I'm an OK painter, and I can end up with a pretty good-looking mini, but it takes me 10 hours to achieve what a good painter can do in 1 hour. So...

I want to learn how to speedpaint to bust out some of these many many monsters I have so the table isn't covered in all white/grey minis when we play. The first thing I need is a wet pallete. Do any of you have a home-made wet pallette or I guess even a purchased cheap wet pallete you can recommend?

I'm going to search for some videos on speed-painting to "close to table top" quality. If you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

While I am still a relative newbie, for speed painting I like to go with a couple base colors and then add a wash or dry brush for detail.

Yo that's kinda all I do and I'm comfy with it. Still ain't the fastest but it gets the job done and will always look better than nothin'.

So..

At least you don't have to paint the elementals.

WELL. Yes. Technically true (or the ghosts / banshees and a couple of others)
That said I'm not sure i like leaving them as clear plastic minis so I may end up painting them anyway.

I think my only real niggle is that they are slightly smaller than "standard" mini sizes (most notable in the one-off hero figures) but that's really not a huge deal (if you pardon the pun) given i would otherwise have been using tokens or dice or something to represent figures before hand.

My main problem right now is choice paralysis as to what to paint first

Pyx, what have you gotten yourself into.

one down! Some kind of frost worm.

I'll be done with them in no time!

Very good ideas.

Thanks for the preview of the mins that will someday eventually get here, Pyx!

You get yours and immediately have something painted and ready to hit the table. Mine will get here and sit in boxes for a couple years. Boooooo.....

I went over a friend's house this morning because he was going to hook up his new airbrush and compressor and test them out. We did that and then I came home and got motivated!

I bought a compressor and 2 (really cheap) airbrushes, hoses, extra fittings, other stuff, etc. from a lady off of Craigslist a couple years ago and only tried to use it once and didn't get far. I think I paid $100 for it all, and the compressor was brand new. After I got home today, I set it all back up and learned to use it. I grabbed some of my oversized trolls, ogres, etc. and laid down some paint. I used cheap-o hobby paint that I thinned down about 1-to-1 with thinner that I made (75% water, 25% alcohol, 4 drops of glycerin) and went to town.

This was the result. When I was done and had everything cleaned and put up, I realized I missed spots. Oops.

I didn't really do any miniature "painting", but I got one step closer.

Our Risus 2.0 "Milky Way Delivery Service" game is cancelled for tomorrow. Maybe... just maybe... I'll paint something for real. Maybe.

A friend and I went halves on this set, it's due Monday, then we'll have the task of splitting it. Should be fun. I'm grabbing a couple these for ice worms for Frostgrave. We'll its been so long that Stargrave has been announced, released for a while and am collecting minis for, so this will now be a space worm!

Also I'm going to try and nab the giant for Blood Bowl!

I use a wet pallete and more importantly I made one for my son as it saves so much paint! It's the best thing have picked up off the YouTube paint tips since getting back into the hobby. There are a bunch of vids if search YouTube, very simple, fairly shallow, flat bottomed sandwich / tupperware box, kitchen roll sheets, baking paper, splash or two of water, job done.

The other top tip I've taken away from vids and relates to speed of painting, use as big a brush as think able to use, well bigger than thought could use. I now use a size 4 artists brush from hobby raft for majority of my base coating as opposed to the much smaller specialist miniature painting brushes was using before. I too am a slow painter but the big brush seems to speed things up dramatically. I tried batch painting, but that just didn't work for me, it just gets too dull.

What I'm painting... Blood Bowl team, Stirland Sure Shots. Humans can now have Halflings on their roster.

Am trying to paint them as quickly as I can to get them tabletop ready. Two games into local league now and I still have 8 players to complete, including an ogre.

I painted that last one as a reward for scoring a touchdown first game, then he went and scored second game too, what do I offer now already painted...

I’ll check out the Tubes for palette ideas, thanks.

Put a mark on their helmets when they score a TD. And a different one if they kill/maim someone. I’m just assuming in a game called Blood Bowl that people get badly hurt.

A progress update! Be through all of these in no time! *sweats*

Great idea, ta. You're right about people getting badly hurt and worse!

Learned a valuable lesson today. When one of your paint bottles has some dried paint blocking the drip nipple (is there a better phase?) do not squeeze until pressure pushes through the blockage. Bad things can happen.

Learned that the wrong way myself, so I sympathize! Now i poke through the gunk with a tooth pick or pin first.

Here's an Orktober experiment

I've been pushing outside my comfort zone a little lately (for better or for worse). I tried pretty hard to get the NMM effect down while trying to do some more complicated skin tones.

It's rough, but I'm really happy with it!

Anyone know why some of the images in this thread might be rendering as 1x1 pixels? It's almost always A_Unicycle's pictures, so I'm wondering if it's something about the image host they're using? I often end up having to find the link in the source code and follow it.

Using Chrome on a PC if that helps.

How odd.

More often than not, I am linking to photos I've uploaded to Twitter.
