Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Missed concert regret.

Ouch. My biggest miss was a friend of mine almost talking me into going to see some band called Nirvana before Smells Like Teen Spirit hit, I can't remember why we passed but man....

As for Isbell, we are lucky in that Asheville is only five hours from Nashville and he's got friends here so we get plenty of opportunities. Have seen him three times and it's always as good show.

One time I went to see 13 hardcore bands play at an incredibly small venue. The venue was a lunch spot in Riverside, CA called Spankies Cafe. At this time, Spankies Cafe didn’t even have a stage. The bands all played on the carpet at the same level as the audience. The headlining band was called Helmet. On the drive to the venue the conversation went like this:

“Is the headliner the same band that is getting played on the radio?”

“Well. They’re both named Helmet but I don’t think this is the same band.”

“All I know is that when Haywire plays I’m gonna lose my sh*t!”

“You know Steve Gonzalez? He’s playing at this show with Sterling Wilson. It’s some experimental thing they’re doing. Two bass players and a drum machine.”

“Oh! I had no idea. That’s awesome!” [Steve and Sterling were two guys from our neighborhood that we skated with. Sterling had been the bass player for the hardcore band No! For An Answer, but I always thought of him as the nice punker guy who let us borrow his records. If it weren’t for Sterling I might have never discovered punk and hardcore.]

“Well if that Helmet band plays Unsung then it’s safe to assume that they’re the ones on the radio.”

Helmet did indeed play unsung. There were so many bands that played before them that by the time that Helmet went on, the entire audience was laying on the floor and in the booths of the restaurant. I mean. So. Many. Mediocre local acts played before Helmet. It was both boring and exhausting to wait for those untalented hacks to finish their sets. Even though we halfheartedly called for an encore, Helmet did not come back out. They were disgusted and confused at the lack of enthusiasm by the audience.

But Haywire f*cking killed! Their performance that day, to my memory, was one of the most intense metal/hardcore performances I’d ever experienced. I was on the carpet in front of the band, thrashing as hard as they were. I spoke with the vocalist and drummer, who are brothers, after their set. I gushed about how great they were. The vocalist let me know that it was probably their last show. Their guitarist was having addiction issues and was making their life impossible. They officially broke up a few months later in the middle of their first European tour. Apparently it was going great until the rest of the band found out that the guitarist had called all of their upcoming venues and canceled every show on the tour.

These anecdotes are reminding me of the first opening act when I saw Nine Inch Nails in a small arena show at my college. They were this random band who were touring with NIN but nobody in the venue had heard of them, so everyone was just standing around smoking, chatting, and generally ignoring them. I specifically remember a group of people near me sitting on the ground playing cards.

And meanwhile up on stage, the singer of this unknown band - a weird skinny guy dressed entirely in black women's lingerie - had climbed onto a stack of speakers and was screaming into microphone shaped like a dildo.

And you know who that singer turned out to be? That's right -- it was a very young Michael Bublé.

(ok actually it was Marilyn Manson. The anecdote is true though.)

This is pretty well done. One of the best Bloodborne soundtrack songs done in the style of Doom Eternal's soundtrack.

The making of process:

He did a Castlevania song next:

He's done Final Fantasy, Hades, Mass Effect, Halo, and other game soundtracks as well.

RIP BIZ. I’m so sad.

When I first started working at UPS all of my friends would give me the “baby please, you work for…”

Really enjoying the sound of this. Checking out more of her stuff now.

From her three song "Don't Judge a Song by It's Cover" EP (Green Day's Brain Stew, The Offspring's Self Esteem, and Limp Bizkit's Break Stuff)

The Warning’s TEDxUniversityOfNevada from 2017 is such a good 18 minutes.

I listened to this on my drive to work and now all I want to do is chill and listen to more. Ugh.

I love Matt and Kim. Was that video supposed to be like the tail trail from Rocket League?

There was also this one this week.

Wanna feel old? Listen to Olivia Vedder:

The new Halsey album (haven't really listened to their previous stuff) is produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's fantastic.

Two songs I particularly like:

I’m cross posting because this is game of the year fodder.

This should be out now

If you have the means, I suggest to play with (auto)HDR on and/or OLED display. This game is gorgeous. A nice sound system/headphone would not hurt either.

I started playing The Artful Escape last night and it's really stunning. It seems to be a very easy game that wants you to focus on the story, the sights, and the sounds. I'm really enjoying it so far.

OMG it’s really good. I mean it’s absolutely beautiful! The art is stunning!! The music is so amazingly great!!

It’s essentially a walking simulator with gorgeous art and beautiful music. If you are a fan of shred metal, you should play this.

You should absolutely play this if you are a fan of this song…

New Glass Animals single is typically fun and gets me moving

New Kacey Musgraves is great! Full album of dealing with a divorce. A little shade gets thrown here and there. Haven't fully processed it yet. Just started listening.

I cannot WAIT for the new War on Drugs album. So excited. First two singles are amazeballs.

With Lucius!

That new War On Drugs sounds soooo good.

This song came up as a recommendation on my music service this week and I had a similar reaction. Was interesting enough that I queued up more by the band tho.

Been vibing to these lately

My reply matched with my reaction, but also...

Spoiler:

I was quoting the song :)
