Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Speaking of awful things. I idly watched S.A.S. Rise of the black swan while doing dishes over a couple of evenings. This piece of trash really wanted to portray being a psychopath / sociopath as something that is a good thing. A unique and wonderful thing. I am not 100% sure what the point of it was but it left me with a bad taste and I was wondering if the creators of this movie thinks serial killers are amazing people. Gross.

Isn't that "Atlas Shrugged" or anything Ayn Rand?

Not what I envisioned (but then that would never be on Netflix) but looks interesting nonetheless.

I really enjoyed Villains. Jeffrey Donovan is always brilliant and I’d love to see him in more movies. As they are all amoral characters you just do not know which way things are going to go and who will have the upper hand from one scene to the next.

Not a gem, I'd like to warn everyone away from Life As We Knew It which not only is a pretty awful "romantic comedy" (I use the term loosely), but also includes the repeated and offhand use of a transphobic slur and ableist slur. Stay far, far, far away.

The final season of Lucifer is out. Here's a non-spoilery article about it if you've never watched it.

I haven't seen any of it. Beyond the obvious (Lucifer comes back to earth and is a good guy??) what's the story. (Without too many spoilers if possible.)

Its a buddy cop show. He works with a detective and solves crime. Sometimes a demon or angel will come by to mix things up.

The Paper Tigers wasn't bad. I appreciated the more, err, naturalistic portrayal of Chinese kung-fu. Master Ken puts in a decent turn as a sort of "asia-phile" gwai-lo kung-fu teacher.

It kind of felt like an afterschool special for adults.

I liked Lucifer when it first came out on network TV. But the quality was always kind of hit or miss and it seemed to be declining a lot as it went on. By the time the third season hit, it just got way too stupid to watch.

I understand that the Netflix seasons are better, but I feel like I should watch all the previous episodes to catch up with them. And, the last time I tried that, I just bounced off hard.

Seriously, mid-season three is just dire.

Anyway, I'll probably try to watch again at some point because I really liked the cast and I'm curious to see how they've turned it around. But, I'm just dreading having to slog through the final network episodes.

It did sag a bit there. I'd say you can skip ahead to episode 21 or so. The last two episodes of Season 3, as listed by Netflix, were additional episodes that were originally going to be held over for a season 4 on FOX, so the narrative of the season actually wraps up in episode 24. 23 and 24 together change the status quo significantly, which works given that it's retroactively like the midpoint of the show in terms of seasons.

Kate was fun! Wife and I enjoyed the action.

Kate was a fun movie. I liked thier take on post john wick action movies.

Yeah. I loved it. So many standout fight sequences. I want to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead helming more action movies. She sells a fight so well.

A short film about a girl wanting to be a knight. Netflix has these short films that they sometimes put on youtube also.

Lucifer may have one of the best series endings that I've seen.

I watched and enjoyed a movie mentioned here, Paper Tigers. I think as a 'dad redemption story' though, Chef is better. Both involve a part-time-dad who's not giving a son the attention he deserves and in both cases there's a redemption arc. But in Chef, I think the dad actually earns it. He includes his son on his journey and they bond. In Paper Tigers the bond is just sort of an undeserved reward at the end.

The son in Chef does a great job acting like a kid that just got everything he wanted from his dad, but can't act too excited in case that changes his dad's mind.

Good point, I agree with that.

To be fair, not even the defeat of the big bad felt like it was earned lol. But I was fine with it. #LoweredExpectations

Yeah they built the big bad up a lot and the trio didn't really get their 'getting back in shape' montage to earn the win.

Watched Nightbooks which is about kids getting trapped in a Tardis own by Jessica Jones. If the kids don't please Jessica the witch she will kill them or worst. It was a okay movie. Kids will probably dig it. Movie felt like a dark goosebumps episode. The last violent scene might be to much for kids.

Haven't watched the movie, but I follow Chvches on YouTube and this showed up on my feed yesterday:

Absolutely f*cking spectacular.

So regardless of the quality of the movie, huge thanks to Netflix for making that happen.

I suspect they just picked it up for the show. There has been a resurgence past couple of years of bands covering the song. Which for those that may not know showed up first on the Lost Boys soundtrack

Chicago Med, more like Chicago Meh.

I made the mistake of looking at the ratings percentage and inevitably I am now mad that the above Show I Didn't Think Was All That has a bigger number (90%!) than Show I Love. It's a crime.

Finished it tonight. Spoiler-ish thoughts...

Spoiler:

So if I understand this correctly:

Hell is a full time job where you can never see your family and friends.

But heaven is a job where you can leave and visit your family and friends any time you wish.

Yeah, that seems about right...

That is an excellent cover of the original. Lost Boys was one of my favorite movies as a younger me and I loved this song in the movie.

Somehow stumbled into the Tom Segura comedy specials. I laughed.

Segura is pretty good.
