Horror movies and TV series

Speaking of more thriller-like, I can't recommend The Orphanage enough. It's a Spanish film, so expect to read subtitles, but the films as a whole works on an emotional level. The trailer doesn't quite paint the proper pic of what the film is like, but it was the only one I could find.

That’s incredibly familiar. I’m not sure if I’ve seen it or it was recommended and I watched the trailer. Possibly the latter. Gelmo del Toro’s movies don’t always work for me but they are invariably well crafted and worth watching.

The girl with all the gifts is extremely good. It’s not that scary as far as I remember but it was written by Mike Carey one of my favourite comic book authors and it smarter than it appears to be at first.

Anyway, Blade from Puppet Master is cool looking.

He is one of the most expressive puppets and probably has the strongest personalities the puppets.

Probability why he received his own spin off film last year.

Fwiw, he only executive produced it. I don't like particularly like del Toro's directed films either, they're always off. Beautifully realized though.

Anyway, the Orphanage was directed by JA Bayona who went on to direct Jurassic Park Fallen Kingdom (ugh) and now the first two episodes of LOTR tv series. Nuts.

Watched The Girl That Got Away and didn't like it but I think most people might like it. A lady kills a bunch of people including a few kids. One kid escapes and the lady gets sent to prison for a number of years. The lady escapes and goes after the girl that got away.

I didn't understand the ending and the middle was boring. I think I let small things get to me.

Spoiler:

The adult girl that escape has a daughter that she sends away when she finds out the killer escape. However, she continues to teach and babysit. So she knows her kid is in danger just being around her but she is okay putting other people's kids in danger.

I doubt most people will even bat a eye at that in a horror/slasher or whatever this is movie but things like that got to me.

The movie is the type that could go into a few different directions. Who is the killer, is there a killer, is some supernatural thing going on, are there more than one killers, so it is a bit of a mystery also. I don't think it is a good mystery because I don't think they ruled off all the possible things. Maybe it is one of those movies where it wants you to decide what happen and I hate those types of movie. Or maybe I'm dumb and making a simple movie more complicated than it was.

Watched Escape Room Tournament of Champions and liked it. I think the first Escape Room was better and the basic idea of the movie should have been done in a 3rd or 4th movie. I would suggest watching the first movie first since entire idea of this movie rest on people coming back from the first movie.

This is a movie to watch people die in creative trap rooms. The production value of something like saw is better but I haven't really liked a saw movie. The production value is better than Cube but Cube was a better movie.

Oh, I enjoyed Cube and Cube Zero. The two ends of the Cube trilogy. Hypercube, the middle one, is apparently bad. The two book ends make a complete story and compliment each other.

The Cube movie provided one of my memorable rental story moments. I was in there browsing the DVDs in the horror section and a little kid walked past. He stopped and looked at the Cube cover, which had a man who had clearly been chopped into cubes but was somehow still standing. The pieces had bloody edges and where slightly out of alignment, as I remember it, as if he were about to fall apart. The young kid starred at it for a good while then, raising a finger, he pointed to the sectioned parts of the guy’s face and started counting, “One, two, three, four…”

Hypercube is indeed terrible.

So much so that I've never seen the third one which I guess I should.

If you liked Cube then you should check out The Platform on Netflix.

I love me some horror movies so off the top of my head …

Silent Hill
The Thing
In the mouth of madness
Saw
The Mist
The Hitcher
The Void
The Descent
30 Days of Night
Event Horizon
Hereditary
Videodrome
It Follows
The Blair Witch Project
Dagon

Watched The Crazies 2009 remake and liked it. The guy from Justified is the star. People in small town star going crazy killing each other. The military shows up to get things under control. I bet you can guess how that goes. The heroes need to escape the crazies and the military.

The Justified guy is The Justified guy in this movie. Maybe he has been type casted or maybe he doesn't have range. This is okay because at the end of the day they dug coal together.

I watched it and thought it was extremely well done. One of those movies where you start off being extremely aware of how ridiculous a set up it is and then get sucked in my the characters and the dilemmas they faced trying to deal with that environment and the rules imposed on them.

That reminds me it's past time I re-watched Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Watched Paranorman which somehow I missed when it first came out. Thought it was pretty good. Took some turns I didn't see coming. I might have gotten this confused with Monster House and thought I already seen it. This was better than Monster House but I didn't finish that movie. Animation was good, kids will like it, and few jokes only adults will get. Ending was nice.

Yeah, Paranorman is good. We watched it again recently.

Monster House is meh. There's a reason the motion capture stuff Polar Express and this film used didn't make waves. Turns out we don't want our cgi characters to move exactly like us in our films. Uncanny valley in full effect. Also, LOTS of fat jokes. That didn't age well at all.

What kind of thread is this? No one mentioned The Exorcist on the first page!

I saw it for the first time in the late 90s theater rerelease and I haven't watched it again. Glad I got that full experience but damn what a movie.

I love Nightmare on Elm Street, and New Nightmare. Friday the 13th 1 and 2. After that it gets a bit silly. Hellraiser, Halloween, etc. There was a lot of great stuff in the 80s.

The Thing, The Fog, John Carpenter deserves a shout-out.

I love Scream because it pays homage to all of those.

Final Destination was pretty good too, at least the first one. Signs and Sixth Sense do a brilliant job with atmosphere and jump scares. Too bad Signs doesn't hold up as a movie after one fun watch though.

I had to watch the early 2000s Chainsaw Massacre back when I worked at a theater. And some Exorcist sequel. Not impressed with either. Never watched Saw series as it sounded like gore porn, not scary. Guess I prefer the jumps or creepy stuff to the blood and guts.

I did love the first Paranormal Activity. Saw that one at a full screening with horror fans and it was a hell of a ride.

Haven't watched much the last few years. 2 kids, wife hates horror, so our limited TV time after the kids are asleep doesn't fit much for just me.

Watched Bram Stoker's Dracula which is horny. Horny Horny, horny. So horn. Horny, horny, horny.

And that was the movie. Two thumbs up.

Oddly The Exorcist is a movie I’ve never actually seen, even though I know so much about it and have seen so many classic clips, that I feel like I have. I’ve thought about why that is and really it’s down to the fact that it just wasn’t available for the longest time. They wouldn’t show it on TV in the UK and by the time it was available digitally I basically knew the entire plot. I should watch it though.

The Nightmare on Elm Street movies I enjoyed at the time. At least the first two. Paranormal Activity was almost unbearable to watch. Just showing someone a view through a dark doorway and letting them wait to see if anything will happen can be the tensest thing ever. I’ve seen a few of the sequels which I also enjoyed.

I’m watching The Empty Man at the moment. I’ve heard good things from several people. The opening is incredible. Go in without seeing trailers or anything if you can.

1+ The Exorcist, only watched it for the first time around last Halloween and I was extremely impressed at how it still stood up.

Totally understood how people were freaking out while watching it in theaters, especially for 1973.

The Omen also is very good. Again for a movie that came out in 1976 I went in giving it some slack. Not necessary, gave me all the creeps.

If we're doing Old School then 1968's Rosemary's Baby holds up (if you want to watch something Roman Polanski made).

The revelation scene where the group is praising Satan has the worst delivered line in a movie by the old lady who says that Satan chose Rosemary of all the women in the world. I mean, well, you have to see it.

You ain't kidding. It's about 1:40 in.

Spoiler:

Watched The Empty Man and didn't care for it much but didn't hate it. It is the type of movie where you MIGHT not get it until the last 5 minutes of the movie. Wasn't a fan of the ending. Didn't think things added up. Not sure it even matters considering the ending. Yeah it is one of those movies.

I was going to come and post about it. I feel much the same. It had moments that worked brilliantly and I like that it went away from what felt like a very cookie cutter, ‘teens get involved with supernatural force,’ element but there were aspects of the movie, like the dark figure, that it would have been a lot stronger without. I thought the ending was muddled and it didn't feel like it added up, as you say. If they'd have gotten it right it could have been a 'holy crap!' moment but it didn't work. Interesting to watch at least and the opening segment I thought was brilliant.

Watched Aliens DC which didn't change much from the original. A few new scenes in the beginning is all I noticed. Movie holds up well. Tank run and mech fight were still fun to watch.

My wife and I love a horror movies. We got really into the French New Wave of horror years ago. Martyrs is one of my favorite movies. I also recommend Inside although neither is for the squeamish and the former may not really be a horror movie.

We just watched the Fear Street movies and thought they were pretty good (the first has one great kill). It falls apart in the last movie a bit but it was a fun time.

I also dropping in to plug Psycho Goreman which is cheesy, funny, and doesn't have enough budget for a proper movie. It was a great time for all.

Some already mentioned but here are some that stick out for me.

Halloween (the original and the newer remake)
Nightbreed
Cabin in the Woods
Drag me to Hell
Pumpkinhead
Conjuring
Train to Busan
30 days of night
28 days later
Exorcist
REC
A Quiet Place

28 Days later. Bloody hell. So many movies I missed in my top ten. I love the moment with the plane in that movie.

I've seen the Exorcist about 167 times, and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it.

It's not that I remember Martyrs. It's that I cannot forget Martyrs. No matter how hard I try, it remains. You win, New Wave France.

The auto turrets scene was interesting, but I guess they took it out because the reveal that the xenos are intelligent when Hudson says "How can they think they're animals!" was more dramatic.
