Boston, MA Area GwJr's

Hey all, would anyone be interested in buying my Weird Al Yankovic Tour Ticket? I found out I can't make it that day.
It's on Sun Jul 21 7:30 PM-Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion - Boston, MA

Is it only one ticket?

Yeah

I'm hosting a game of Two Rooms and a Boom by Jamaica Pond (pinebrook area) at noon on Saturday til three. Feel free to swing by if you wanna join in! I'll be the cat the in the German Shepard dog baseball hat on, probably running the game.

I'm reminded again that I go way too long checking in here. I have been running like a madman for the last 2 years and not keeping up with GWJ other than checking into the podcasts. I hope everyone here has been doing well.

Anyone have any ides for National GWJ day?

Hey folks - some of us in ye olde Slack channel are thinking about hanging out at my place in Somerville next Saturday for International GWJ Day. Probably some stretch during the afternoon; break out some board and video games and stream the festivities.

Anybody interested in dropping by for awhile?

(We've got parking, even!)

Not sure the most appropriate place to post this, but as part of our divorce we need to sell our Geek Chic table. It is huge, 4'x7' inside play area, 4'8", 7'8" overall. Has 8 draws each with a play surface built in and 8 detachable cup holders.

I figured I would start here and see if anyone local was interested or knew someone who might be.

PSA, folks - as per every year, we're doing our Extra Life shenanigans over at the CIC in Cambridge. The free, kid-friendly event runs from 1PM to 9PM; you can register here. Our stream page is over here, as per usual, if you'd like to watch remotely or chip in a couple of bucks. Again as per usual, we'll be streaming from 11AM Saturday to 11AM Sunday and it's gonna be a good time.

What's not usual is that this year we threw in with the GWJ team, so, uh, Eleima's gonna need to make that team goal bar a little longer...

If you drop by, look for the loud, redheaded guy on or behind a camera and say hi.

I wish I had known earlier, I woulda checked it out!

New England area Goodjers, NEON Retrofest is back for 2020. They have a Star Wars Arcade cockpit, yo.

https://neonri.com/

NEON is not an 80s convention.

It's also not your typical pop culture event. Rather, NEON is a celebration of Retrofuturism from the late 20th century. And unlike the crowded expos that have become commonplace in 20XX and are happy to sell that nostalgia back to you, NEON is aesthetically and sonically immersive. It's a three-day escape off-world to a place that never really existed, but we wish it did.

Retrofuturism is a term coined in 1983, defined as “a revived enthusiasm for depictions of the future created in the past; also, the use of a style considered futuristic in the past.” NEON celebrates what the near past imagined our future would be, most commonly seen in the Cyberpunk genre, but NEON is the first event of its kind that incorporates the unique aesthetic of this world in its entirety — it's what incredibly popular shows like Stranger Things and countless art, music, game, and film producers are creating right now. Its essence is epic synths, midnight drives, obsolete tech, hard video games, faded summer polaroids, and neon-drenched danger.

NEON is a music festival; a huge 80's and 90's arcade consisting of original restored cabinets; all-day film screenings of rare and hilariously terrible titles; discussions led by innovative creators of yesteryear and today; a retro computing time capsule and LAN room; and a Yacht Rock-inspired chillspace for when you just need to sail away from it all. Add to it curated shopping, vendors, and artists, and you may never want to leave.

A new tomorrow begins again in August 2020. You are not alone.

Oh man it's like they reached into my brain and pulled out the things I'd love the most. I may have to check that out.

At the 2018 con I got to drink a lot, play arcade games, play an indie Pen and Paper RPG with the creator, check out glam-rock cross-dressers, and listen to C64 inspired techno... and we only stayed one day. It was pretty sweet.

Woohoo! I missed the first NEON but it's predecessor, Temple Con, was amazing and run by the same folks. Their retro arcade gallery is worth the price of admission alone.

I'm hoping to attend this year and it would be great to meet up with other GWJers.

Oh Temple Con is gone ? Bummer. That Arcade was rad.

NEON is the direct successor. The arcade is there in all its glory, along with some other goodies.
Here are some shots from the 2018 con. They skipped 2019 to allow for additional a e s t h e t i c retooling and planning.

Remember this thread? Yeah.....

Hey Boston!

Today is opening day for the 40th anniversary of King Richard’s Faire. I haven’t been here in probably 15 years, but I brought my youngest and her friend today. We’re waiting for the 5pm joust to the death, after a long day of walking and shopping. I was afraid this place was going to be kinda super run-down and sad after all this time, but I’m pleased to report that they’ve been maintaining the grounds very well. It’s still crazy expensive though.

I try to make it out to KRF with the kids each year. We always have a good time but, yeah, the pricing is very over the top. I have heard good things about the Connecticut Ren Faire as well but have never been personally.

Interesting! I've never heard of the Connecticut Ren Faire before. I'll definitely have to check it out - probably not this year, but maybe next year.

Man this thread....I feel like this thread is a metaphor for my life the last two/three years...I don't know where they went!

Anyone in the Boston area interested in (or know of a place that wants) some board games and RPG material? I'm looking to clean out my closet but do not want to go through the hassle of posting/selling the stuff and would rather it just end up with people who would enjoy them.

Some old AH games:

Third Reich
Civilization
Up Front and the Banzai expansion
Starship Troopers

For RPGs:

AD& D 1st Edition: some supplemental materials/books
AD&D 2nd Edition: PH, DMG, Monstrous Compendium
A bunch of modules and third party resource material
EPT
Car Wars
Cyborg Commando
Traveller (the 5x8 booklets)

Probably some other stuff in there.

Edit: Forgot to mention Gloomhaven
