That's exactly what QAnon did. They love the Matrix. How ironic that the wackiest of conspiracy-nutters think they are the ones living in reality.

The guy on my Facebook feed who posts the most right-wing talking points is also the one who loves to quote George Orwell. When I feel like trolling I'll tell him "the Ministry of Truth thanks you for your service" and watch the fireworks.

Coopting the red pill terminology goes back to gamergate and MRA jerks. They "woke up" to the "reality" that feminism is ruining society and the root cause of all their problems. It's been carried along through the evolution of gamergate into the alt-right and now into QAnon nonsense so its not anything new.

Exactly this. There was a subreddit back in the early 2010s called TheRedPill where all of the MRA idiots would gather to complain about feminism. And then it just expanded from there.

It's just another story of the pipeline from MRA -> Gamergate -> Qanon -> Alt-right.

So yeah, "being red-pilled" means a person has bought into that ideology and now sees the "real" world. Which usually boils down to how women/POC/"PC Culture" has just made it impossible to live life as a privileged white male any more.

The writers of The Matrix are also not very pleased at the co-opting of "red pill":

Oops. I read the comments.

Wait what?

I thought it was "smacking my head" like the Picard face-palm maneuver. Out of exasperation.

Yeah, that was my assumption from context, too, but at some point I looked it up. Now I kind of wonder how many people are using it and meaning something different than the "official" meaning.

Next you'll tell me lol doesn't mean "lots of love!" Lol.

Right back at ya buddy!

"Slow hand clap" seems to be changing it's meaning. I've started to see people use it as a positive endorsement instead of a negative one.

What use to be ironic is now ironically considered to be genuine.

I think it depends on which celebrity gif you use.

Slow hand clap started out as genuine, the famous black-and-white GIF is from Citizen Kane after all. Then the sarcastic version became mainstream 10-15 years ago.

The Citizen Kane clip is insincere in that Kane's trying to force the audience to applaud for his wife who he's put in the lead of a show despite her lack of talent. It's both performative and an expression of angry dominance.

Right but the Citizen Kane clip is all about someone's bad performance .

Maybe I’m just the right age, but this golf clap is iconic in my mind, as I watched the movie so, so many times growing up.

Btw, Grenn, gif #2….is that a celebrity?

James Van Der Beek from Dawson's Creek.

The slow clap isn't changing its meaning, there's just two different slow claps.
The genuine one is supposed to be started by one person after a shockingly good performance/accomplishment. It gets the rest of the stunned audience to join in, and becomes a raucous applause and standing ovation.

The sarcastic one is more like the golf clap in that it's mocking whatever is being applauded.

Yes. His name is Dawson Creek.

Thank you. Within his entire IMDB acting list I’ve only seen How I Met Your Mother (he’s in three episodes), Robot Chicken, Saturday Night Live (one episode), and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (he’s literally the last actor listed). So just a Swiss-cheese model of being in things I don’t care about or missed.

He's Bluntman. Or Chronic? I forget.

Not being American, I just twigged on the "yes I'm Siskel yes I'm Ebert and you're getting two thumbs up" lyrics in The Bad Touch by the Bloodhound gang.

Smh they didn't localise into "yes I'm David yes I'm Margaret and you're getting two five stars" just for me. Not that I was a die hard fan but still.

Well but then the “thumbs up” innuendo would be gone. Every lyric in that song is an innuendo.

Same with this song

Highly encourage watching Don’t Trust The B* In Apartment 23. Probably Van Der Beek’s best work.

That show was great. I'm glad Ritter got the Jessica Jones gig but I still wish Apt23 had more seasons.

When my wife and I were doing a watch of Break Bad (first time for her, second for me) and when she showed up as Jesse's GF I was like "oh hey that's Jessica Jones." It is really sad what happened with the Marvel Netflix shows. They had some great writing, not you Iron Fist, and great casting and I felt like they were all set to get really interesting in the next season.

Daredevil >>> Jessica Jones = Luke Cage = The Punisher >>> Iron Fish

Yes, I'm leaving that typo in.

Next you'll be claiming 'Temba, with arms wide' is referring to colonialism!

Iron Fish sounds more interesting!

Probably would be better than DC Aquaman
