ETID sounds kinda post-hardcore to me. Have you tried A Wilhelm Scream?

Love that album. Well, the middle has some songs I'm not as into. Still, those guys match my mental energy so hard. I can get dangerously high just by driving to something I'm looking forward to (disc golf, boardgame night, dinner with friends) listening to this kinda stuff.

To me WS's more melodic hardcore or skate punk than post-hardcore, which I'm also into when I'm in the mood, stuff like Bad Religion, Rise Against, Touche Amore, Descendents, Strike Anywhere and Strung Out.

When I think post-hardcore I'm thinking Helmet, Fugazi, Butthole Surfers, Jesus Lizard, Refused, At the Drive In, and so forth, which are my happy place and I all crank to 11 regularly.

When I think metalcore I'm thinking Converge, Botch, BTBAM (prog), Dillinger Escape Plan, ETID, Vein, Gulch and the like which all make you want to kick over your furniture.

Note: Post-Boredom is pretty darn adjacent to all that stuff and is rather unique for ETID.

NC's own Between the Buried and Me releases Colors II on Friday, in the event there's anyone here aside from me still into progressive metalcore.

The full album is out now. I haven’t listened yet because I’m trying to shotgun a 21 hour audiobook as quickly as possible. It’s Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.

New Wolves in the Throne Room album is out today. I've been excited for this one for a good while. Some of the best US black metal being made right now.

Side note, I've been putting a lot of time into Rocksmith lately to help learn guitar and since someone uploaded three of their older tunes to the custom song site, I've been playing them. It's so fun. An incredible amount of strumming, but fun.

Shotgunning the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl Migration?!? You MONSTER. That said, I sort of understand the urgency to revisit the Joad experience because who knows, right?

Anyhow, I too have yet to listen to Colors II because work, but man oh man am I gonna crank this to 11 later.

I got the audiobook through Libby so there’s a due date for when I have to give it back. I just finished East of Eden the other day. Steinbeck is f*cking rad!

I’m going to listen to that album tonight as well.

Dude, how have we never discussed punk bands before tonight? Punk is my truest musical love, even though I listen to more metal these days. I feel like there isn't enough interesting melodic/skate punk being made today.

Bad Religion is one of my all-time favorite bands.

And on the post-hardcoreish side, Helmet. Betty is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Yeah, not many bands keeping melodic/skate punk interesting these days...Jeff Rosenstock, Descendents, Frenzal Rhomb, The Raging Nathans, not sure who else.

I watched a video on Youtube in some series about passe genres, and the dude said melodic punk was mainly played by the same bands that played it in the 90s.

Apparently Deafheaven's new album is full on gaze. As in shoe, not black.

I didn't see that turn coming so soon, but I'm actively disinterested in the band until they find a good vocalist. I can't listen to the guy, harsh or clean, despite enjoying them musically.

Oh really? I might check this album out then.

Rats, maybe not then.

Completely agree - if the vocalist doesn't "fit," it doesn't work for my ears either.

Wow, you're right. I had to listen after reading this and it's like a totally different band. They changed an entire genre for this one. I saw them live a couple years ago and I can't even imagine the same people on stage playing these songs.

Edit: I take it back, but only slightly. A few of the songs in the latter half of the album do have their signature heavy sound, but I'm with you garion on the rest of it.

Cool. She does a bunch of other pedals in other videos (and covers and game music) but this proves there's unexplored territory in metal.

I'm back on my weeb t(h)rash.

AMG has a casting call for reviewers so I put in a submission.

They told folks to select a 2.5 (out of 5) album, so I did Tool's Fear Inoculum. I'll post my review once I hear back.

My Spotify Release Radar from today is littered with Metallica's Black album covers. Apparently there's a release called The Metallica Blacklist which is nothing but covers of the Black album from 53 artists. These aren't normal covers, each group has put their spin on things. It's ... interesting?

Edit: Wow

Edit:Edit: I don't think Miley's voice works for the song, but this is absolutely a fascinating listen because of how varied these artists are. Alessia Cara leads off the playlist and I enjoyed that. Now I'm hoping she takes a darker turn and releases some goth music or whatever.

Andrew W. K. Is metal.

That is really good.

I thought so too.

Yeah… I don’t know what I was expecting but I was pleasantly surprised!

I randomly thought about this band and it turns out their album is on Apple Music. I had to turn it off because my dog wouldn’t stop moshing.

Spoiler:

All of the “vocals” are recordings of the guitarist’s pit bull growling and barking like a badass. And yes. I really did have to turn it off because my dog was getting pissed off.

The singer of this band is the son of a friend. I’m really impressed by their latest single.

The band started while the members were in high school. They’re like early 20s now.

Cool, though I think the singer is actually younger than that. He might be 18 now. Probably 17. But he's the youngest and that's crazy.

Yeah. I just confirmed with his dad and Aidan just turned 17. I could have swore he was 17 like four years ago. Wild!!

That's hilarious!

I've been listening to this song pretty much nonstop for the past few days.

I went to an Andrew W.K. show years ago - I'd guess around 2002. It was everything you would hope it would be. By the end, most of the crowd had migrated to the stage. He's pretty much the punk rock-est dude on Earth.

edit
This one’s for Uni. This is a continuation of a conversation which started on Twitter.

This band Neanderthal consists of Matt and Joe from infest as well as the drummer and bassist of PHC, (which can stand for Pillsbury Hardcore or Pissed Happy Children depending on which album you’re listening to).

Uni,
I hope this post finds you!

Spoiler:

-

For more context, here’s an INFEST EP from about 1990.

This one’s for Uni. Y’all can feel free to enjoy it too if you’re into it. This band was friends with INFEST and combined with INFEST to create the band Neanderthal. I have this LP on 12”vinyl. Original pressing.

The bassist for PHC is an interesting cat. He had built his own bass distortion effects. Which is why you don’t hear anything like it anywhere.

This says Converge, but it's doom.

I can't decide if this is genius or trash. I'm leaning toward trash.

I really dig it! I can't say I'm a huge fan of the video, but I love Converge trying something different, and IMO this is way more interesting than most self-labeled doom, a subgenre that I often feel as though I should like but in reality almost never do.

Has anyone here started going to concerts again? I've been very hesitant, but I did pick up tickets to a couple small-ish shows where they are requiring proof of vaccination and the wearing of masks for entry. We'll see how it goes. I'll likely get myself covid-tested in the days afterwards just to be sure.

One is Blood Incantation in December, and the other is Wolves in the Throne Room in January. I absolutely cannot wait - these will be my first shows since just before the pandemic.
