Welcome folks, and happy “508th Anniversary of the Battle of Spurs” week! This was a battle in 1513, where Henry VIII of England teamed up with the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, to form the Holy League and prevent French incursions into Italy. At this point, Henry was still on his first wife and was acting as a model Catholic monarch, pitching in to defend the Papacy. If he happened to gain a little extra territory in France, well, that was just a bonus. You may all celebrate by playing a game where your ally does all the diplomatic maneuvering and then you betray them in a sudden shock split.

Can you have a big name indie title? Twelve Minutes is by Luis Antonio, who used to work at Rockstar and Ubisoft. It is published by Annapurna Interactive and was featured at the Tribeca Film Festival. It includes voicework by prominent actors: Willem Dafoe, James McEvoy, and Daisy Ridley. The actual game involves replaying the same 12-minute loop, and what you learn in one run can assist you in the next, like a mini-Groundhog Day. Folks have been licking their chops for this since it was announced in 2015, and it’s finally here this week.

On the more obscure indie front is Nikhil Murthy’s Syphilisation. A necessary consequence of doing all the X’s in 4X games is that they have a colonial flavour: expand territory, exploit resources, exterminate enemies. But this is a post-colonial 4X game that interrogates those mechanics more critically. It’s framed in terms of students doing a group report on Gandhi, Churchill, and the Raj, and presented as a typical, top-down hex-map, 4X game with tech trees and units. It enters Early Access this week and looks full of interesting ideas, almost like an interactive history tutorial. For those wondering about the title, Nikhil Murthy is the developer and ‘Syphilisation’ is a pun on ‘Civilisation.’

Monster Harvest is by Canadian devs, Maple Powered Games. It’s Stardew Valley gameplay with a twist. The crops you plant include “Planimals”, which are monster companions that you can bring along exploring and into battle. It looks charming and the people involved seem very polite.

It’s just over a year since Ghost of Tsushima was released. Now, a whole bunch of add-ons are coming out. The “Legends” multiplayer mode comes to the PS5 version, along with updates to include haptic feedback for the PS5 controllers and other tweaks. The new expansion, Iki Island, comes to both PS5 and PS4. As you’d expect, it’s a whole new island with new story, enemies, techniques, characters, haikus, and so forth. You can get it separately, or as part of the Director’s Cut, which bundles all the new stuff together. I stalled on Ghost of Tsushima after Act 1, and this looks like a great reason to jump back in.

The only Switch sclusy this week is Volleyball Challenge, which is an arcadey take on volleyball where you have player stats and can unlock special moves, like a multi-ball or fake ball. It touts itself as the best volleyball game this year. This is true, as it’s the only volleyball game so far this year.

My GOTW this week is a photo finish between the Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for knocking a great game off of my Pile of Shame, and Twelve Minutes for having an interesting concept and strong credentials. I’ll give it to Twelve Minutes by a whisker—it’s hard to go past that Annapurna seal of quality.

Comments

Road 96 is also out this week and it looks SUPER interesting

Nikhil Murthy? Who? I went in thinking putting his name on there was a pig headed move (as I think it needs to die in a fire) but Syphilisation seems like a fun twist on 4X to show new concepts (and take a stab at colonialism). Edit: Okay, maybe he's got a bit of an ego.

Twelve Minutes sounds SUPER interesting. Outer Wilds with a tighter loop.

Dark horse/late addition:

This drops tomorrow, for free (for owners of the game).

Humankind out tomorrow as well

Madden 22 for Sony and Microsoft.

Volleyball Challenge and World Soccer Strikers '91 for Nintendo.

Sports games, haha.

I'm really annoyed that Twelve Minutes is going to be on GamePass for console only and not for PC.

Are you sure? It's been previously advertised as being on Game Pass on all platforms - console, PC and Cloud...

Well, now I'm confused. I read an article that I now can't find which said it's console only, but IGN says it will be PC too so maybe that was wrong. Twelve Minutes was strangely omitted from the official "Coming Soon to Xbox GamePass" article for August. And the game does not show up in the "coming soon" section of the PC app, which is really odd since it's a game that got a fair amount of hype.

Yeah, the Game Pass marketing for 12 Minutes has been bizarre. I've noticed that, too. About a week or two ago, Xbox (and Annapurna) suddenly stopped saying that the 12 Minutes would be on Game Pass - leading some of us to wonder if it was being pulled from the service at the last second.

It's definitely coming, per Xbox Wire, but it's been a confusing few days. As you say, it's a high-profile game, and it makes no sense that Xbox hasn't been shouting about it.

At least we don't have long to wait to confirm whether it'll be on PC or not.

So much good stuff this week! At a glance I'm keen for Twelve Minutes, Monster Harvest, and Road 96.

Just to add to the mystery, the pinned tweet of the official GamePass for PC account is from June and has Twelve Minutes announced for Aug 19.

Well, I'm really glad I was wrong. Twelve Minutes will be on GamePass for PC also.

I don't have an Xbox or a PC worth a damn, but I desperately want to play Twelve Minutes. I am figuring it will get dropped on PS4/PS5 at some point (though who knows I suppose). I am very jealous of everyone else who will be playing it.
