Hidden Gems of HBO Max

Titans

I think I'm almost done with the first season, but it so far strikes me as an R-rated DC Universe that is actually fun, not completely bleak. Can't wait to watch Doom Patrol.

I really enjoyed Doom Patrol

And Titans Season 3 is starting/coming out on August 12th. Glad I had more lead time to finish what's already out than I did with Bosch on Prime.

Even if you're not necessarily a surfing fan, 100 Foot Wave is so far a very good documentary series.

So far Suicide Squad is absolutely hilarious.

So glad people are catching into Wellington Paranormal. It's the best.

Yes!

Really enjoyed The Suicide Squad.

Super great. Kind of a mixture of GotG, Deadpool, and The Dirty Dozen. And it all works. And all the participants have good character development.

Watched Hudson Hawk the other night for the first time in ages and I gotta say it still holds up. I do not understand the hate this movie got back in the day. It's a classic screwball comedy.

Love Hudson Hawk. Saw it twice in the theater.

I too love it. It is about the last time Bruce really did comedy and he has great timing and personality.

Whoever is sitting on the streaming rights to Moonlighting needs to get their head out of their rumpus.

How much you wanna bet it's tied up in the music for the show somehow? It's always the god damned music.

Really been enjoying The Knick, but it is a tough watch. The gore and the mix of modern and outdated medicine causes a lot of "oh don't do that!" moments, but it is superbly acted and realized.

I found it interesting that at least 5 of the top 10 sumarai movies were in HBO Max.

I squirmed more than once.

I watched Reminiscence yesterday. Can anyone tell me what the opposite of a "hidden gem" is?

A Michael Bay movie?

Counterpoint - I really enjoyed it.

Watched Reminiscence and thought it was okay. However, I might have missed half the plot or the b plot.

Spoiler:

I have no idea why the people were rioting at the end. I know it was because some plot became public but I don't know what that plot is. I don't think it was over the woman that killed herself to protect the kid and wolverine.

Kind of slow but picked up after the first action scene. The main story is wolverine trying to find out what happen to his girlfriend. The memory machine makes things interesting.

Spoiler:

Rich guy buys a bunch of dry land, forcing everyone else to live in waterlogged areas caused by global warming. Rich guy dies, leaving everything to his only son - except rich guy had had an affair and helped conceive a child. Rich guy's son hires a hit man to kill the mistress and "illegitimate" child, in order to keep all of the fortune.

Something like that?

That is my take on it but don't see why people would start rioting. The mother and kid is the only new information which no one should care about.

Rioters aren't always the most level-headed individuals. Apologies if I've offended any rioters lurking in here.

Been enjoying the heck out of The Other Two.

It's a comedy about two siblings in their 20s--one's a struggling actor and the other is former professional dancer who's lost her way--who have to deal with their 13-year-old brother being catapulted into fame when a music video he made for fun went viral.

The show has some considerable comedic talent working for it. SNL's Molly Shannon plays their recently widowed mother who's enjoying the ride and Ken Marino plays an incompetent manager who's trying to hold on to the gravy train. The two siblings are played by Heléne Yorke, who I vaguely remember from High Maintenance (another pretty good HBO Max show) and Hulu's Futureman, and Drew Tarver, who I first learned about from the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast and then the hilarious Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ on the ill-fated Seeso streaming channel.

The show was originally aired on Comedy Central back in 2019. It got renewed, but COVID interrupted the production of its second season. During that time the show was sold to HBO Max, which just began to air the second season.

I thought Reminiscence was great. Don't get the hate at all.

Can't say I'm enjoying having my HBO Max subscription through Amazon cancelled because of some agreement between Amazon and WarnerMedia and HBO not giving me any option to simply change my payment from Amazon to them. In fact the HBO Max help center still talks about subscribing through Prime.

You'd think a company that was looking at losing $75 million a month from Prime subscriptions would have been Johnny-on-the-spot about making the transition as easy and smooth as possible.

My big use of my HBO Max subscription has been a DCAU rewatch, and man, I really do not like their UI. It is fine at remembering where I left off and resuming, but it is not intuitive to get to an episode listing of a series.

I have yet to find a streaming service whose UI I actually like.

I've got no complaints about Netflix'.

HBO Max figured their sh*t out with Amazon and is now offering half off ($7.49/month) for six months for new and returning subscribers through the 26th. More info about the deal and how to take advantage of it is here.

Amazon's also offering STARZ, Showtime, and Paramount+ for $0.99 for two months.
