MST3K on Kickstarter

5 days of livestreams starting tonight. The first one on Monday night was really fun and I’m looking forward to these even though their air times make it impossible for me to watch live. What kind of sociopath is awake at 11:30 in the morning?!

Hey some of us sociopaths live in different timezones.

I love it all. Joel, Mike, new crew. Just give us more. Instaback.

Are these streaming on Twitch, or some other platform?

Twitch, youtube and facebook

They announced the first two movies on the stream last night. Spoiler'ed in case.

Spoiler:

Demon Squad and Robot Wars

Demon Squad seems pretty recent for MST3K. Two years old, which I guess syncs up with Werewolf? But also pretty terrible looking.

The final stretch goal was surpassed early this morning so Joel had to add a couple more goals, but this has officially raised more than the original kickstarter now. Currently sitting at just under 6 million with 4 hours left, it’s possible it may max out the new goals as well.

For those unaware of it, Club MST3K has all the classic episodes, including the early KTMA episodes. Many of them are VHS rips. I was watching Rocketship XM last night and it had commercials for the original gameboy.

I have a soft spot for Robot Monster. The inclusion of the commercials gives Commercial Sign more nostalgic oomf. Hello, Nordic Track!

While the crew continues to work on the new season they’ve decided to do some riff-a-long streams of summer-themed classic episodes, starting next week. Sounds like this will basically be like the streams they did with old & new cast members during the Kickstarter, but without the begging for money.

Filming has started.

Full Season 13 lineup from the annual Turkey Day Marathon:

The also said that The Christmas Dragon was just too much for one person so Joel, Jonah, & Emily will all be co-hosting that episode.

Stumbled across Mac and Me the other night.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoy this show.

Joel originally said that he found a movie worse than Manos.

I wonder which one of those movies is it.

Release date for season 13 was apparently announced during the Turkey Day Marathon, it was only onscreen for a couple seconds and I missed it until I rewatched the version they uploaded to the official youtube channel:

Episode One premiere was today with the bizarre Santo & the Treasure of Dracula. There were some technical issues that delayed the stream for about half an hour and covid forced them to use some cheaper-than-usual-looking green screen instead of actual sets but the episode itself was pretty good and featured a truly great skit with Tom Servo imitating Randy Savage.
After the episode they showed what they have planned for the Gizmoplex and it seems like it will either be an appropriately weird experience or a gimmicky mess. They’re creating a virtual theater that you navigate like Myst, in order to watch a premier you have to go to a ticket booth and purchase a ticket and in order to watch content from your library you have to pick up the kingachrome canister of what you want to watch and “flush” it into the screening room before it will play.

That Santo movie was wild. I also learned there's like 50 of them.

Have they got their watch party functionality going yet? Or are they still just in a backer preview phase?

All the promised bells and whistles are going to be in the Gizmoplex app which is still in development, though they did say that they were going to start sending out beta invites in the next couple months. Until then the episode premiers, events, and purchased/rewarded episodes will be available on a placeholder streaming app and through their website.

I'm a little confused at the new system. If I backed this year, do I get access to ALL the new movies, or only access to them for a certain amount of time? (i.e. for the three months of the "Pass" that I have from my backer level.)

From my understanding of it the Pass just gives you access to a rotating selection of curated content and live events such as episode premieres or the Manos retrospective that’s coming up later this month. Whether you “own” the new eps or not depends upon your kickstarter rewards otherwise you have to rent or buy them from the store, though they also intend to have free ad-supported versions as well. It sort of feels like they could have used another six months to finish all this stuff before releasing.

Official premiere for the new season & the Gizmoplex platform is this friday, May 6th.

The backer preview for episode 3 was last week, featuring Emily and the new Tom & Crow clone bots. Episode 3 also featured IMO one of the best musical numbers of any season of the show.

Agreed, such an amazing episode. Love the new crew.

The season might be over but the livestream events are still happening! This upcoming friday March 24th @5pm PST, for the first time ever, Mike Nelson will be visiting the Gizmoplex with Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett for a live Rifftrax event, hosted by Emily Marsh.

I keep forgetting to go check out this Gizmoplex thing. I guess now is a good time; if they've finished Season 13 then that means it should be up and running pretty well.

I'm seeing summaries for 1304 through 1313. Where are the first 3 episodes? Are they really locked behind a $130 payment for the season bundle? I don't doubt that the season is worth that but it's a bit more than I want to spend for however many minutes I manage to get before I'm interrupted by the toddler.

Wait, I already have an account there? When did I set that up? "Backer Exclusive" thumbnail in a "continue watching" section? Must be something connected with the season 11 Kickstarter. I'm having vague memories of checking things out when they were first getting the web site going. Throwing a Q&A session and some classic episodes at prior backers sounds like a sound strategy... that's probably what they did.

They sure are keen to sell me passes to all the events they have planned for 2022...

Edit: Oh, they gave me access to the season 11 episodes on this platform because I backed the KS. That's why I have an account there. Duh.

I haven’t really used the Gizmoplex itself since it first came out since it’s still browser only, I’ve been viewing everything through the phone/tablet and Roku app and all the episodes appear for me in both the library and a tab on the front page so it may just be a Gizmoplex-specific issue.
The passes haven’t really been necessary since the end of february and are only if you want to see the previous live events and first cuts of the episodes. The individual eps you can rent for $5 for a week or buy for $15.
All the new episodes and shorts have also entered rotation on the MST3K/Rifftrax channel on Pluto TV.

It's not browser-only, they have apps for a variety of devices. I used it on a FireTV Stick.

“The Gizmoplex” is their weird virtual theater, those are just the regular streaming apps that I already use. It seems like they’re just labeling everything as Gizmoplex now though, maybe they’re backing away from wanting everyone to spend 5 minutes playing a Myst clone in order to watch an episode.
