Here are the supporter-owned football clubs we mentioned during the show. Here at two chances to own a football club for less than a round of drinks.

(as an aside, I always wondered where mix's quote "putting on the foil "came from and now I know.)

Wooden overcoats is a sweet sitcom about undertakers. The best drama I’ve heard outside the BBC and ISTYA of course.

That's very kind of you Yreg - though I never thought we'd be accused of being dramatic. There are many other adjectives I would have expected to see before that one.

The Guardian is asking people to tell them about their favourite podcasts. Of course I would like people to submit I Saw That Years Ago, but this is a good chance for everyone to share their favourite shows.

There is unlikely to be a show this weekend, as Martyn has to edit the last one we recorded. That was a guest show where we spoke to someone for more than four hours, so you can imagine that there is a huge amount of work for him to do. It is a great show though, I was crying with laughter for most of it.

Instead, here's a show from July 2015, when we watched The Black Hole

http://istya.libsyn.com/ep-47-the-bl...

A recent episode of Bullseye with Jesse Thorn had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on as a guest, and it is a really fascinating interview.

The most recent episodes of Criminal (it was a two parter) called "48 hours" are frightening, overwhelming and infuriating.

If you ever hear the line "you criticize cops but what if you're robbed", get ready to listen to an example of what the answer is if it's the same type of cops being criticized.

Martyn is still editing the guest show, as a few hours of conversation between three people can take much more time than the same length discussion with two people. Several days, in fact. His RSI has also been playing up, which slows things down still. (Plus he's been editing Patreon shows.)

Thusly, here's another show from 2015 - this time we watched High Noon with Gary Cooper.

That much I’ve already ascertained. What I want to know is how to stop them.

You can't. Manchin and Sinema won't kill the filibuster, so voting right protections will never get passed. SCOTUS recently ruled that restrictions that clearly and plainly violate the voting rights act are fine. Roberts has carefully pretended to be a Centrist while ensuring a Republican advantage in almost every election or voting case that has come to him for decades. Short of revolution, we will have permanent minority rule in a few more elections.

Different sort of show this week. We're still editing an episode, so here's an example of the extra shows our Patreon supporters get.

I Saw That Years Ago - This week we wonder if Keanu Reeves is a Whoah Dude or a No Dude in... JOHNNY MNEMONIC

In the decade or so that the podcast has been going, this is the first show of its type - we review a movie that was voted on by our Patreon supporters. We gave them the option of a 90s film about a sexy South American dance or this. Did they make the right choice?

Note - the audio partly drops for a few seconds towards the latter part of the show. For context, Martyn is saying that the segment we're talking about reminds of him two train guards in Trading Places.

This episode will be extra great because I am currently in the middle of Neuromancer. It's my favorite novel and I re-read it every 2 to 3 years.

This one is not a whole series, just one episode of the ABC News podcast The Signal, which is probably in the same ballpark as All Things Considered from NPR.

Where your old clothes end up

A must-listen if you've ever donated clothes to Goodwill et al.

I already knew, and maybe a lot of you do too, the basic elements of this story but holy sh*t are the specifics now jaw-dropping.

There's also a TV episode following the story but I'm not sure if can be watched outside Australia without region lock sidestepping. Dunno if you can buy it in some way. The show is called Foreign Correspondent and the episode is called Dead White Man's Clothes.

Martyn talks about it quite a bit. Enjoy.

In the US I found it on YouTube. That was fascinating and disturbing. The footage was beautifully shot. Honestly I had no idea about this phenomenon. I can’t stop thinking about it.

Thanks for posting the video, it was interesting. Makes me want to be extra sure the clothes I donate don't have any stains or holes.

I asked a local food bank if they take clothing donations. They straight up said that they’d only take brand new clothes, preferably with the tags on. Ironically, I was donating exactly that. Sometimes at cristmas I get clothes that don’t fit.

The ubiquitous Robert Evans is reviving his podcast called It Could Happen Here. I’m halfway through the first episode of season 2 and it’s exactly what you’d be expecting if you’d listened to season 1. Only now it’s DAILY?!?

I hope the episodes are short because I don’t have it in me to listen to anything past 20 minutes long for daily podcasts. Especially a doom and gloom podcast like that one.

I just caught the ad for it and I thought it was supposed to take a positive slant. Positive changes that we can make. Anyway, I'll check it out.

It follows the same pattern as Worst Year Ever and Even More News in that it’s mostly doom and doom, but the last three minutes tries to be optimistic. The positive spin at the end highlights mutual aid and explains how it’s a pretty good tool for deterring fascism.

It’s also less explicitly about civil war and more about extrapolating the effects of climate change, inequality, and resource scarcity.

One cleaver thing Evans is doing is there’s a fictional narrative set in the near future in which horrible things happen that are very similar to events that have already happened IRL. This gives the narrative a big boost in plausibility. I’ve listened to the 2nd episode. I guess it’s really going to be daily.

So I had never listened to All Things Considered before, and wow I didn't realise how short and breaking-newsy it was. Four+ episodes a day! The Signal is closer to whatever the next longer, slower topical show than that is.

Also, I did the NPR podcast survey for the first time, one of the questions was 'how many podcast episodes do you listen to per week' so I counted for this week and got to 40. Yep. I used to only listen to 90 min plus gaming shows but now I've started 99% Invisible from the beginning, plus Planet Money and their daily indicator show so my episode count has gone way up.

99PI and Planet Money are two of my faves.
