NFL 2021: The preseasoning

Lamar Jackson proves he's an idiot by getting Covid again.

You would honestly think that after getting it the first time he'd get the vax.

I was wondering when these would start to drop. My Legion's favorite part of the article:

We've got an outbreak of Tebow Fever in here, and I'm anti-vaxxin'.

Garion is the superspreader.

Only one 1st round pick failed to sign a contract before the start of their team's training camp.

Zach Wilson.

They're battling with the Jets over offset langauage and bonus payment schedules.

Trey Lance, the pick after Wilson, was the only other 1st rounder unsigned before today. I imagine his agent was looking at the Wilson negotiations and wanted to ensure Lance got roughly the same, but ultimately they decided missing any camp was a no-go, and Lance signed earlier today.

Assuming it's not a breakthrough case.

Frank Reich just tested positive despite being vaccinated. He is asymptomatic.

If Lamar is unvaccinated, then he's going to miss at least a week and a half of camp. Pretty awful way for Ravens camp to start.

If it's anything like the way they did testing in the MLB then it's possible he was merely around Covid. When guys in baseball kept coming back positive after being vaccinated it was because they were doing nasal swabs and finding Covid in their nose, not necessarily being Covid-positive in a symptomatic way.

Edit: From ESPN article -

Jackson reported to camp last Thursday and tested negative for five straight days before receiving a positive result Tuesday, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. Unvaccinated players are subject to daily testing, and vaccinated players are required to get tested once every 14 days.

Guess that means he's not vaccinated since he's being tested daily.

Randall Cobb trade is done.

Houston sends Cobb to Green Bay while retaining $3m of his 2021 salary. They get a 6th from Green Bay in return.

Yeah sounds like Lamar was one of those "I already got it what do I need a vaccine for?" people. And Delta is the answer.

Dammit dude.

I was just saying what a moron Jon Rahm must be to get covid and withdraw from a golf tournament he was winning and then 3 months later have covid again and have to miss the Olympics. Going to have to send the same criticism at my guy Lamar.

Considering that Covid hurt Lamar's production for a few games last year you'd think he'd not want to get it again.

You can get Covid only 3 months after having it?

Yeah, actually only 6 weeks apart.

Jon Rahm

Apparently he was vaccinated when he caught the first one, but only a few days out, not the full 14 for protection. And the second, I don't know. I'm guessing Delta since it's everywhere right now

But where is the irrational QB move?

Blake Bortles got cut. Pretty sad I might never see him take a snap for the Packers. In the Superbowl.

Zach Wilson finally signs a contract.

Over/under on how long before he tests positive for COVID?

YouTube served this video up; it's dated October 26, 2019, and reading the comments at this point? A BIT AWKWARD.

HEY YOUTUBE I CAN THINK OF AN 11TH THING.

Wasn't his agent basically waiting for Trey Lance to sign his contract, which happened yesterday?

The Athletic (via Mike Sando) is out with its annual QB tier rankings. It's here if you have a sub.

If you don't:

TIER 1
1. Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes
3. Tom Brady
4. Russell Wilson
5. Deshaun Watson

TIER 2
6. Josh Allen
7. Lamar Jackson
8. Matt Stafford
9. Dak Prescott
10. Justin Herbert
11. Matt Ryan (?!?!!?)
12. Kyler Murray
13. Ryan Tannehill
14. Joe Burrow

TIER 3
15. David Carr
16. Ben Roethlisberger
17. Baker Mayfield
18. Kirk Cousins
19. Jared Goff and Carson Wentz
21. Jimmy G
22. Danny Dimes
23. Ryan Fitzpatrick

TIER 4
24. Sam Darnold
25. Jameis Winston
26. Teddy Bridgewater
27. Cam Newton
28. Andy Dalton
29. Tua Tagovailoa
30. Jalen Hurts
31. Drew Lock
32. Tyrod Taylor

To burrow under the paywall ...

Spoiler:

There are two Reddit threads that cut and paste from The Athletic: Part 1 and Part 2

I don't see Tebow on there.

Look man, Russell Wilson was great. But he's won 1 playoff game the last 3 seasons, same as Lamar. Deshaun went 4-12 last season and shouldn't he be in jail instead of on this list?

Allen is career 28-15. Deshaun 28-25. Lamar 30-7.

Whatever.

Haha, someone gave Garoppolo a Tier 1 vote.

He's catching passes up the seam from Jesus, like he always wanted.

This makes it sound like he's dead.

He was MVP of the first half of the season throwing to DK Metcalf and a couple of ball boys. I mean, Tyler Lockett got 100 receptions largely because DK couldn't catch everything.

That said, I have the same quibble with Matt Ryan. Lots of folks want to put him in the HoF, and he's usually only the third-best* QB in the NFC South.

* My 2021 predictions:
1. Brady (durr)
2. DARNOLD**
3. Ryan
4. Whoever TF the Saints play at QB and I hope it's Hill bc I wanna see NO go 4-13

** Kidding. Darnold will be lucky to be the fifth-best QB in the division this year.

There's an Audio Adrenaline reference to be made here, but I'm unsure anyone else would get it.

Carson Wentz Redemption Tour has been sidelined w some sort of foot problem. No idea if it's his left or right, and no one seems to know how long he'll be out except "indefinitely."

Quick (and without looking): Name the Colts' backup QBs!

Not $wag so who cares.

This would have been his shot.

I'll take "Guys Who Have Thrown At Least As Many NFL Passes As The Jets Backups" for $600, Alex.

Wait, I need to take another crack at this question.

"The BOAT in about 2 days."

I did indeed have to look up their roster, but Jacob Eason isn't a bad backup. Wasn't expecting him to start so soon though...

Give it a few weeks and the answer will be Bortles.
