Coronavirus Tales

Looks like we may be headed into another wave here. Too bad everyone stopped wearing masks just in time for 4th of July. However, I am sure everyone will responsibly and the government will step in and make sure simple things like masks are required so we don't spiral out of control. I am so sick of this pattern.

Honestly, I expected more of a spike from the 4th. I'm not thrilled with where things are, but it largely seems to be hitting places you'd expect:

Florida, GA, Republican Governors aligned with Trump, etc

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the data by now, but it bears repeating. I’m in Southern California so I’ll only talk about LA.

In LA, 99.999% (actual data, not hyperbole) of COVID hospitalizations are of unvaccinated people who are infected with the delta variant.

Did they say delta variant specifically or just some form of Covid?

Delta specifically. I think it’s replaced the OG strain.

Wow, I wonder what happens to the old strains. Do they stop spreading or is the amount of spread of the delta so great that it overwhelms the numbers.

A combination, I guess. The older strains continue dying out where there are vaccinations and precautions, but delta cases are growing fast.

As I understand it, Delta is similar enough to the older strains that if you get it and survive, your body will know how to fight off all of them. And since it will get to you faster it's basically outcompeting the others in the same ecological niche.

So basically there's like one person with COVID in LA who isn't the unvaccinated+Delta combo? What's the deal with that guy?

Nobody ever claimed that the vaccines were 100% effective. And vs the delta variant the MRNA vaccines are 80% effective rather than the 95% efficacy vs the original strain. Thing is though, the MRNA vaccines give enough immunity boost to lower the intensity of the delta variant and therefore GREATLY reduce hospitalization and death.

So yeah. One unlucky person in LA who was vaccinated still ended up hospitalized with the delta variant. There are myriad reasons of how this could have happened.

Got my second shot of Pfizer today. As people are getting more loose with the rules - though everyone still wears masks in public places inside - and infection rates are going up again as Delta takes flight I'm rather happy. Two more weeks!

Apart from some fatigue yesterday, no side effects! Yay!

We think my son has strep throat. Went to three different clinics to get him seen. Going on three hours. All we need is antibiotics. All because of all the people who have the delta variant.

The doctor’s offices are overwhelmed there already?

I’m not even in LA. I’m about an hour south of LA in Orange County.

Well my cousin and her husband have it. Apparently he's pretty bad off, on respirator. Considering some of the things I've seen him post on Facebook the last few years I'm not surprised they didn't get vaccinated. But I'm pretty upset he's taken my cousin with him and put their two under 10 kids at risk.

I feel ya. Hope things turn out for the best!

I know that feeling. Out of the 19 relatives I have in Florida, only 5 are vaccinated (sadly, that number was surprisingly high to me, I wouldn't have expected any of them to get it) and of the remaining 14, 10 have covid that I know of.

Whelp, wife has Covid(symptoms mild, has both doses of pfizer). FUUUUUUUCK I am so angry. Of course she let the girls climb all over her despite having a cough and gravely voice, stating "it's just a summer cold!" Until i pleaded with her to get a test. Now I get to go take a test for me and the girls.

I am so angry right now I could spit.

So sorry, Sally... I'm hoping for good test results.

Thanks, bud. Found a rapid test place and took the girls to get our tests. Should know in another 20 minutes or so.

Well, myself and youngest tested positive. Oldest negative but has definitely been exposed.

Crap Sally. Good luck and keep us updated please.

My youngest is inconsolable and I don't know what to do with the oldest. I don't want to send her to my dad's and then have her exhibit symptoms and get him sick(he is fully vaccinated).

Can you put her up in a hotel for the quarantine period?

She is a young 11, I don't think that would work emotionally.

Camp out in the back yard?
Delivery pizza every night?
Sounds like a nice staycation for an 11 year old!

We have a big top floor on the house and are in the middle of masking up and sanitizing bathroom and hall. Will get her another test on Sunday and if still negative she can go stay at my dad's.

Yet another unvaccinated decrying about they wish they should have gotten their shots. "It doesn't matter until it personally affects me" is a too common mindset.
