NFL 2021: The preseasoning

As a rule, if Mike Tanier wrote it, it's probably pretty damn good, and his latest is on the Hall of Fame debate on Eli Manning.

I'm glad he's back with FO. Much better place for him than churning out Bleacher Report content.

Frank Clark

Barkevious Mingo

That is all.

Speaking of Football Outsiders, the 2021 FO Almanac is out now.

WFT saying their new name will not be "Warriors" and say the new name will be revealed in early 2022. And they'll probably keep kicking that can down the road until they think they can get away with throwing up their hands and bringing back the old name.

At this point, they're trying to sell WTF jerseys until they can sell Washington ____ jerseys.

I'd buy a WTF jersey.

But only if it had Snyder as a logo.

I still think they should change the name to the Snyders of Landover.

The f*ck?

Edit: The domestic violence part is probably the bigger factor than the burglary. I did not expect to ever see his name in a headline like this, though.

The interwebs say "burglary domestic violence" can mean somebody got locked out of their house during a domestic dispute, and broke back into the house, that sort of thing. So who knows here; definitely shocking, but guess whether it's 1st/2nd degree would say a lot. If it's 1st degree, that would be a very bad thing.

ESPN on Richard Sherman's arrest:

The spokesman, who would not confirm the name of the person taken into custody, said a 911 call from the residence was received at 2 a.m. PT. The person calling said that an adult male family member who did not live at the residence was attempting to force his way into the home.

When police arrived, the suspect was outside the home. He fought with police but was eventually apprehended and taken to a local hospital to be checked. After he was cleared medically, he was booked into the King County Correctional Facility.

The spokesman said no one at the residence was injured.

Oh lordy all these people on social media acting like the Crabtree rant was a warning sign.

More from Schefty, who hopefully is more accurate with this stuff than he is with 49ers draft plans:

TMZ: "Sherman allegedly fought with cops so much ... we're told a K9 was deployed to take down the NFL player and help bring him into custody."

Cops say when they arrived on scene, they identified Sherman as the suspect ... and claim he became uncooperative and combative during questioning.

This is the first part of the entire incident that I can easily believe.

So, something happens that sets Sherman off, tearing ass across town to get to this family member's house? And he hits a highway barrier while en route, and has to hoof it the rest of the way there?

That's a pretty intense reaction to whatever started this sequence of events. Could be abuser behavior, but I could also envision this reaction to a family member being hurt by another family member.

EDIT: So the arrest was in Redmond, WA.

Sherman's wife is from Redmond and her parents still live there, so it seems fairly likely that the family house in question was the in-laws.

Why is hitting a concrete barrier being classified as a hit-and-run? Was he supposed to get the barriers insurance info?

Apparently he's supposed to report it? They're citing "damage to state Department of Transportation property" for that one.

On a lighter, more fun topic, my new QB looks bangin' in a sports bra:

Bro or manssiere?

Wow Jimmy G got tanned!

He lose a bet or something?

Nah, these are those performance tracker devices. Teams have been using these for a while, though sometimes they come packaged in a compression shirt rather than this smaller, well, bra-like fitting.

But pretty much all the soccer players are wearing them, you see it anytime they take off their shirts.

Rugby guys wear trackers sewn into the backs of their jerseys. Leave it to the NFL to require another piece of gear so they can pocket more sponsorship money.

Edit: Looks like the England, Ireland and South African rugby teams (three of the top 5 or so) use the same company for their player GPS. Not the bra, tho.

The NFL puts GPS tracking into shoulder pads, but those only apply to game tracking. Obviously shoulder pad GPS can't do anything for you in unpadded practices.

Ah. Makes perfect sense.

What do the teams use all the data for? It's not for official stats, right, but for fitness? I have no idea.

At this point there's still a lot of data gathering to figure out what it all even means. In some cases it's figuring out what players of different heights and weights should be able to do in accordance to their position. Finding ways to set baseline metrics. In some cases that's health related in others its identifying players that have another gear that they should be able to reach.

It's also used to find things that we wouldn't be able to measure that actually greatly impact a player's effectiveness. A good example is spin-rate in baseball. That's how many times a baseball spins from a pitcher's hand to the catcher's mitt. They've figure out that the more spins, the more effective the pitch. That's also something we haven't been able to measure until modern technology. Teams now identify pitchers with high spin rates or try to change a grip on a baseball to increase spin-rate.

Wait is this SFW? Should I click it or report it?

It's SFW but you should report it because I dirtied our pristine NFL threads with soccer content.

Looks like Sherman may not have been sober during this incident. Police are recommending DUI charges be added on:

Starting to look an awful lot like "wife flees drunk husband to her parents' house, drunk husband pursues drunkenly".

Presuming, of course, police are operating in good faith and not targeting a black man with trumped up bullsh*t, which is no longer something I will automatically assume to be absent.

But it's definitely not looking great for #25 right now.

I wonder how long it'll take body cam footage to be released.
