Rocket League Catch All

Cross-posting from the "Name that game thread". How many of you remember this gem? I played a lot of this game back in the day and always wanted a true modern sequel...until Rocket League came along and showed it could be done so much better.

So much more violent than Rocket League

That'd make an interesting Rocket League mod.

Zemase did a Rocket League Taskmaster series. Mantid posted some videos in the "Gaming video" thread over here:

I was surprised and delighted by how good they are.

Any advice on some good training packs?
I'm a low Diamond player and want to improve a bit. Mostly play 2s. Trying to up the speed of my game and mechanics. I try to pay attention to positioning the most as I figured I'll never be a great mechanical player but I can win with strategy.

I fire up Shots You Shouldn't Miss "42BF-686D-E047-574B"
and Kepvert's BackBoard defense "DDC9-8CBF-5E2C-C3BE"

I wish I had a coach to show me the weak points in my game to show me where to work on.

Training packs can be good when you know what specific things you need to work on. It's hard to recommend specific ones if you don't know what you are looking for except ones that are generically useful.

I can safely guess that your power shots/clears likely need work because everyone needs to work on those. See the bit near the end of this video where he shows how to use all-star aerial training for a power shot drill:

If you are consistent with that drill I can recommend a more advanced one that I use.

There are discords where people are willing to do some basic free coaching such as replay reviews. I frequent the Middle Aged Noobs discord and their coaching channel is very active and sometimes people offer to do replay review on there. They also do training camps for groups of players. Discord link: https://discord.com/invite/Fh2XS9uxv8

If you are looking to rank up one of the best things you can do is play with and against higher ranked players and pay attention to what they are doing that is beating you then focus your training on those things. Unfortunately that isn't possible in ranked as you generally play against people of your own level and repeating what people at your rank do will just keep you at your rank. In an RL community/discord with higher ranked players find some people who are up for some friendly 2v2 matches or even someone who is willing to go into higher MMR unranked 2v2 with you. Make sure it’s someone who is a higher ranked 2v2 player than you tho. Many players who primarily play 3v3 are not as good at 2v2 and may only show you bad habits.

Yeah play with us Saturday night. Watch panda (and dork, and other champs), get beat, and you'll eventually get better.

Friday nights are big too usually.

Re-reading your question I realized you are mostly looking for “Trying to up the speed of my game and mechanics” and for that the best practice has always been “grinding freeplay”. Here’s some videos about that:

And here's another video on a slightly different type of power shot that is really easy to setup in matches while also being effective and safe because you can easily recover it into a 50/50 if challenged and you don't get put out of position by a flip do you can recover fast:

If you want someone to do replay review the absolute best replays are ones where you felt you were playing well but you just barely lost. If you have a game like that save a replay and get someone to review that one. If you are on PC it is easy to send replays to people for review. If you are on console it’s harder because you can’t get at the replay files directly.

Thanks for the tips! I think this will help make freeplay time more effective.
I'll keep an eye on the GWJ discord to hop in some games with you guys!

Happy 4th everyone!

I wanted to clarify this point a bit. There are patterns of play that are good habits in 3v3 but are bad habits in 2v2 because of how different those game modes are. If a 3v3 player has good enough mechanics and speed they can usually still get a pretty good 2v2 rank even with these bad habits. They are still bad habits. If you get 2v2 advice/coaching from someone who primarily plays 3v3 watch out for whether they are someone who leans on their mechanics and never really learned how to play 2v2 properly. Here's a pretty good explanation of the bigger bad habits 3v3 players tend to bring to 2v2:

Rocket League is the only game I know that has never stopped being fun since the first moment I started back in Feb 2016. Any time I get tired of some part of it I change modes. I’ve taken many breaks from RL over the years but those are always because of work or vacation and not because of RL.

Really good video.

I use workshop maps a lot. Some of them are really fun while also being good training. Huge fan of Leth’s rings maps.

Done your season reward wins yet?

INTRODUCING SEASON 3 REWARDS

YouTube comments seem mad about decals again so soon. But I do think the champ one looks nice.

Also titles for GC in hoops is Dunk Master. I really kind of want that haha. Oh well, not going to happen

At least there’s a chance people might actually use the reward items once in a while if it’s a universal decal. Personally I’d like to see a nice subtle boost or trail again. The season 4 silver reward is the best looking trail in the game.

Blizzard Wizard is my favorite GC title. The SSL Rumble title is pretty good too: RNGENIUS.

And Standard Champion finally. Whew. Thanks, panda, for a few games to get me over the hump.

Bottles tonight! Hope to see some of y'all in an hour or two.

RL Community Update: July 2021

Blah blah blah for a while and then

Right now, our resources are committed to Rocket League, Rocket League Sideswipe, and related initiatives that we aren’t ready to talk about yet…

… we’ve heard you on user-generated content and other social-focused game features. While we can’t promise anything, we are planning, and pushing on some of the more prominent requests, like improved voice chat (more on that later).

We’ll be talking about what’s coming with Season 4 in early August. A ton of community-requested stuff is incoming, including Tournament improvements, tweaks to casual and competitive playlists, several brand new LTMs, adjustments to game bans, …

They replied that alt mode tournaments will be in the mix.
