The GWJ JRPG Club Version 2.5 HD Remaster: Announcing our Q2 2024 Game!

I have a 3DS (somewhere... collecting dust) but was planning on picking this up on iOS.

I assumed being turned-based combat it would work alright with the touch-screen but now it comes time to actually bite the bullet I thought I better check.

Does anybody have experience with the iOS or Andriod version?

I just found this online:
MH Stories mobile or 2DS.

In my opinion, use the mobile version. Here's some pros and cons:

+ Mobile has way better graphics than 2DS or 3DS version. Even if you use low setting (this really helps to reduce battery drainage) on mobile, the graphics are still better on mobile.

+ Mobile version cost less than 2DS or 3DS version; furthermore all platforms (3DS, iOS and Android) with English localization have the exact same updates, content and DLCs (the only exception is Zelda DLC; only DS version has it).

+ Mobile version has quicksave feature (it automatically save your game in the quicksave slot whenever you enter a new area) and manual/hard save feature. 3DS version only has manual/hard save feature. This is really handy since in the case of game crashing, you can simply use quicksave to load your game. A lot of area also doesn't have place for hard/manual save; quicksave will make your gaming experience more convenient.

+ Controls are nice and simple; you move with the left touch screen while adjusting camera angle with the right touch screen. In addition to that, you simply tap/slide stuff during combat (it is difficult to explain this); whereas on 3DS you need to mash buttons, push L/R, twist something, etc.

+ In case you would like to do PVP, mobile has more users than 3DS. PVP is dead on mobile but on 3DS it is really dead (this is due to the fact that the DS version has been released far longer than mobile and all the reasons stated above; furthermore, different platforms are not compatible with each other (3DS for 3DS (2DS), iOS for iOS, Android for Android)). In order for popularity will be 1) Android, 2) iOS, 3) 3DS. Regardless of your choice however, the best way to do PVP will be to request it here on Monster Hunter Reddit or on Gamefaqs.

- It drains battery fast. The low setting will reduce the drainage somewhat but your phone (iPhone 6S) will still heat up.

- It is 5GB of data on mobile (I don't know on 3DS).

- One collaboration is not included. This is Zelda DLC. It allows you to get Epona (rarity 2 unique monsters) and Link's outfit and weapon.

= Regardless of which platform you use, the English localization version is still stuck in Version 1.0 whereas the Japanese version (both 3DS and mobile) already has Version 1.3. This version updates allows you to obtain new monsters, outfit and content. It's unknown when this update will be implemented for the English audience (It's been 2 years for 3DS while it's been 6 months for mobile).

Thanks for the details.
The iOS version is downloading now.

Excited to get started.

I played Dragon Quest IV for about 4 straight hours tonight to clear it off my list so I'm ready to go!

Good luck guys... I will pass

I hesitated a bit, but after I failed to find a cheaper copy for the 3DS, I decided to get the iOS version instead. I think this is the most expensive app I've purchased on my phone... It's downloading now, and I should start playing later this week. I was hoping to finish at least one of the two giant JRPGs I'm playing at the moment before I started, but since I won't get there until either late July or early August, I figured I should just start now.

I have it installed on my 3DS, so I'm ready to go. Will probably get to it later this week.

Definitely going to give this a shot, though I'm still dithering on whether to pick it up for mobile or throw a bone to my poor neglected 3DS.

I went with mobile because it was half the price of the 3DS version, and it looks better. So far, on-screen controls seem to work pretty well (but I haven't gotten into combat yet).

That Rathalos baby is cute as hell.

I've played about 40 minutes (sorry, I couldn't wait!) and it's interesting so far. Performance on 3DS is all over the place...Fantastic use of 3D so when it's running at 60FPS it's like looking through a window. It's thrown me off sometimes because of the great sense of depth making me feel like something is behind the 3DS. It's a shame it's not always that smooth though, lots of character pop-in on my New 3DS too...It's odd seeing the grey mannequin placeholders turn into NPCs when you get close.

Absolutely not a fan of the gambling rock paper scissor combat so far, but I've heard it gets deeper than picking a number and crossing your fingers.

Charming though, and it's got that Monster Hunter style done really well. Despite it being chibi and colourful, it still feels very much the part.

No need to apologize for excitement! The front page is updated, and the new thread is live!

I guess ill go and tyr to finish octopath!!!! This monster hunter game look very good...

I can't remember if it was this thread or an older JRPG club thread, but someone mentioned they had purchased something to make their 3DS easier to hold (maybe Bobbywatson?). Does anyone remember what that was or have recommendations? I noticed that with MHS I feel myself pinching the 3DS to hold it tight since it requires the use of the shoulder buttons.

It was probably me.

Here's the one I use:

It's called "Comfort grip", by DreamGear. No idea if it's still available for purchase. I did a quick search on Amazon Canada with "3ds grip" and found a few cheap options that would probably make your life better.

I have a regular 3DS XL, do you know if the New 3DS XL is larger than that one? Want to make sure if I buy something that it won't end not fitting my console because of the different hardware skews.

Edit: Looks like they are all different sizes, so I would have to buy something specifically for the old 3DS XL. Taking a look at Amazon I found a couple things but they are all over a month long delivery (not showing up until August), so I guess I will just have to live without one. Oh well, was a good idea but the console is old enough there just aren't things laying around for them.

Gotta get myself one of those. My mitts seem to be poorly designed to hold this 2DS XL and my fingers at the bottom seem to turn it off inadvertently every once in a while.

Congrats to bobbywatson, who hits level 9 as he becomes our first Monster Hunter Stories finisher!

I've been posting victory fanfares over the past cycle, but here, it feels appropriate to kick off our leveling celebrations just as Japan kicked off the Olympics:

I know you guys are playing the first game, but I can say that the second game is sooooo good. I've been addicted

And congrats to Sundown, our second finisher! We'll keep on with the Olympics theme, and I'm going to skip the next song that the band played, as we've already (recently) had the Final Fantasy victory fanfare. Next: Tales!

Please add me to the list as I begin my adventure. I'm playing on my phone.

Welcome aboard! We have another dedicated thread to discuss the game; please join us over there! We use this as a master thread, for information about past games, voting on new ones, etc.

I am slacking a bit: must have failed to update the front post when bobby leveled up. And, since my last post, we've had finishes from Ted, A_Unicycle, and Mr GT Chris. Congrats all!

Ted, you get Proof of a Hero:

Uni, you get Kingdom Hearts' Olympus Coliseum music:

Chris, you get Frog's Theme!

Whoa, awesome!

It like I'm watching the opening ceremonies all over again.

Yay thank you LastSuprise! Getting a song at the end is secretely a highlight of the JRPG club for me now

How long until the next game?

I'm gauging if I have time to play another JRPG, or if I should have a little break

I think the next one would start October 1st, since that's the first day of Q4. Voting would be in the middle of next month, of course.

Yep, exactly right!

I noticed that MHS is on Apple Arcade, at least in Australia.

Cross posting in case anyone wants to jump in.

Thanks! Some fond memories there from the recent Chrono Trigger play through.

So, what's going to be next I wonder? Da dum da dum.

Whatever does come next, I think I've realised that any JRPGing I do almost certainly has to be on a handheld system.

It's so much easier to digest long games bit by bit before bed

Oh gosh, I got the exact opposite realization. I couldn't stand constantly playing such a long game on my 3DS. Only reason I got through this one so quick is because I had a two week trip where I really only played my 3DS. I much prefer to sit down and play hours long sessions in front of my TV. Less arm/wrist/shoulder strain too.
