Giant Bomb Bomb-All

Sounds like what we expected - corporate overlords can only drain you for so long until you are looking for a Plan B.

NSFW...... I guess

FWIW, I would like to keep this thread open to GB and all people's work who have been associated with/related to GB.

So Nextlander and Waypoint would count, but I would also include Brad and Will Make A Tech Pod, The Fire Escape Cast, Alt F1, A More Civilized Age, NoClip, Abby's comedy, etc.

I'm okay with that.

Totally. I've seen Fire Escape bandied about, what is it?

Podcast with Dan Ryckert, Mike Mahardy, and Mary Kish.

I tried listening to the Fire Escape Cast. I had to stop after the second or third episode. They spent twenty minutes on some inane "Ohmigod you totally get me! You guys! We're such good friends because we totally get each other! Ohmigod!"

Also turns out Mahardy is annoying. That coupled with the presence of Rykert made me give up on it. I like Mary Kish, but not in this podcast.

I'm just glad Nextlander exists.

Fire Escape Cast is exactly what you want from it, if you are into it - three good friends riffing for three hours, and sometimes talking about gaming. I like it since it's good longform discussion, but I do agree that Dan starts on his heel routine real fast because he knows there's no one to stop him.

I do find myself mentally saying "Shut the f*ck up, Dan" more than once.

I much preferred the friendly banter of the GB crew than the fart talk of Fire Escape. Just not for me.

I'm hoping Fire Escape gets better, but I'm worried it's going to lean harder into itself and it's "in" jokes. I like to hear crazy Dan, Merry is great, and I MaHardy is fine. The show just needs someone to focus it. Let the tangents happen but reel it back in once it's entertainment has been exhausted. The last podcast I believe the phrase "How did we get here" was spoke a few times.

Yeah, I think it's okay, but it's definitely the sort of podcast I could just stop listening to. I completely understand for them the appeal of "we're just three friends catching up and talking about whatever we want!" as an ethos for what they're creating, but as someone who is not one of their friends, sometimes I would prefer if they were a little more focused. That's not the kind of podcast they want to make, which is fine. Also I've never been one to complain about podcast runtimes, but pushing 4 hours is a lot. At least it's only every other week.

I liked having Merry on the Nextlander podcast.

All that was missing was Jeff G and Ryan D.

I think if you approach Fire Escape as a podcast of three people who have known each other for years talking about the things they like and each other, instead of an industry gaming podcast, those expectations are a lot easier to meet.

I know some people don't like Dan - that's fine, nobody likes everyone. And the runtime is long for someone who just wants to sit and listen to a podcast, for sure. But I've been putting it on while playing the new Mario Golf, and it's great for that. I also don't listen to podcasts the same way most other people do, I think - they're usually stop/start things for me, when I need something to occupy my ears, like laundry or dishes, or yard work, the occasional drive, or the various movements and eliminations. So, spread out a cast over a few hours of that kind of stuff and it's not hard to get through them. Shoot, a lot of the time, I find myself out of new episodes of my usual favorite podcasts before the week is out. If anything, Fire Escape will provide a buffer against that.

Also, dedicated gaming podcasts just... bore me. I like what I like, I buy what I think I'll like, play it for a certain amount of time, and move on. Sitting listening to an hour of industry games coverage is much more of a slog for me than any single Fire Escape episode has been thus far.

Danny has a “How I Chose My Two GiantBomb Shows” video up.

Jeff Grubb’s new GrubbSnax show has it’s first episode out.

I took a break from Bombcast for a while after the split, and it really feels like the peanut butter has split up from the chocolate now that Brad is on one show and Jeff another.

That's for me though, for them I'm sure they'll do great on their new paths.

I'm finding Nextlander to be a bit dull. Listening to the last podcast felt like a chore.

They're still figuring things out. They've said as much in many places - it's going to take a bit to find their own voice since they are still used to the flow of Giantbomb, and the types of shows and content they made there.

Give them time.

I'm enjoying Nextlander a massive amount due to Giant Bomb having such a massive turnover and format changes.

That's completely understandable. I'm kind of in the reverse position: I miss the heck out of the Beastcast, but with Brad no longer in the hosting seat on the Bombcast, and Bakalar being there (and with the rotating seats), I've found it more enjoyable. I've only listened to one Nextlander podcast episode, and other than that, until they potentially offer a video version, I'll likely tune in when they have guests on. IMAGE(https://emojipedia-us.s3.dualstack.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/thumbs/120/facebook/65/bust-in-silhouette_1f464.png)

Both GiantBomb and Nextlander were terrible in the "Talking over EA Play" event. Literally couldn't hear the conference over the tangents they went on. Kinda realizing, maybe the "we talk over" isn't for me, I think I had just decided to give them both a chance and, nope. Yeah...I think that's a "you" thing rather than a "them" thing.

I'm not sure it's that. Maybe. It just feels like something is missing. At the moment it's three low personality white dudes talking games. Vinny is the most animated one, but calling him animated feels wrong. They need a wild card.

Someone, who, bear with me here, thinks Terminator 3 is better than Terminator 1?

He said a wild card, not a monster.

I'm 100% agree, and am totally ok with that.

I've had the same reaction a few times during one of these conferences and I've had to remind myself that if I actually wanted to watch the whole thing I can find it on Youtube.

I prefer the new GB stuff to Nextlander so far. More energy. Maybe the Nextlander guys are figuring it out or bogged down with building, but I’m finding it a chore to make time for their multiple podcasts.
