First Shadowrun game is supposedly the worst, by far. Never played it. But found the next two quite decent.

I enjoyed the first Shadowrun game.

Being worse than the others dont necessarily mean it is bad

Kinda like how Mass Effect 2 is worse than Mass Effect 1

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the one to get, imo, and it's a steal at $3 USD. (I would happily pay tenfold to have it on Switch.)

And along those Square Enix/Eidos lines, Just Cause 2 at $1.50 offers an amazing value if the gameplay clicks with you. (And if not, the opportunity cost in finding out amounts to a king size candy bar.)

Batman: Arkham Asylum - Not genre defining but mechanically defining. So, so many games have stolen it's combat system. For good reason though. It feels great. It's very trite, but this game makes you feel like batman.

What appeals to me about this game is that I see it frequently mentioned as one of the best 3D Metroidvanias out there. I like the sound of that. Plenty of exploration, in a world that is neither open nor entirely linear. (At least, I think that's what I should expect...)

I have the original Deus Ex and HR in my basket at the moment. The other games in the series don't seem to be as highly regarded as those two.

I think you've missed the inflation on candy.

So an even sweeter deal, is what I'm hearing you say.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is very, very good. I'd pay $3 to have it wiped from my memory so I could experience it for the first time again.

Epic gave away the entire Arkham franchise a while back so you may already have it.

Arkham Asylum is so good that I bought it on PS3, got platinum, then bought it again on Steam and got 100% achievements again.

Yeah that was like 9 years ago or something. But it's great.

Here here n Aslylum. Perhaps the best story in the trilogy.

Batman doesn't do that.

?

Nah, missed it. Also missed it when it was on Game Pass. It's only $5 now, though, so... not much of an outlay, and I appreciate the folks on here who have weighed in with opinions. Looks like I'm going for it.

Google 'batman catwoman'. The story should appear somewhere near the top of the results.

ah! Got it.

I am just mad I knew what it was about.

Billionaire playboy? Of course he does that.

Lisa: The Painful is $5 on steam if you are looking for something different.

FF 14 complete is $21.60 on Greenman Gaming.
I am tempted to bite. I don't want any hassle with prior accounts though...

There must be a lot of people feeling like me if there is no Steam Sale thread. I think this is the first time I'm struggling to find things to buy, where in the past there was always too much I wanted to buy. I went through my wishlist and looked at what friends are playing and there isn’t a lot that is giving me that ‘oh boy I want that game!’ feeling. I looked at the Steam top sellers - still not much. I don’t even feel like I’ve bought that many new games lately. Usually there is at least a couple games I really want to get.

I put some stuff in my cart and this is what it is right now:
Tainted Grail: Conquest
A-Train PC Classic
Master of Magic Complete
Roll for the Galaxy
Armageddon Empires
Castles of Burgundy
The Talos Principle VR
Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope
Wakamarina Valley, New Zealand

DLC
Euro Truck Simulator 2 - Vive la France !
Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium
Race for the Galaxy: Brink of War
Terraforming Mars - Prelude

I think the only one that I know I want a lot is Tainted Grail: Conquest. I’d probably like A-Train Classic, but it seems like it may be hard to look at. All the recent talk of the new version Master of Magic got me interested, but that game is really ugly. I’ve got Armageddon Empires direct from Cryptic Comet and it’s been ages since I’ve played even though I thought it was pretty good. I’ve got the physical versions Roll for the Galaxy and Castles of Burgundy, and like them quite a bit too, but I don’t seem to play my digital board games that much. I like the idea of playing them, but I tend to choose other things.

I keep feeling like there is some great game I must have lost track of and want to get it, but I just can’t think of what it is. I think I finally hit the point of having too many games (I’m pretty sure I’m not alone here).

Because there's a general feeling of apathy toward these sales, I wanted to highlight some little gems.

Monster Train

50% discount

Like Slay the Spire but bigger and sillier. A little bit more of a tower defense vibe. So far, it's the only roguelite TCG game I'd put on par with the aforementioned king of the genre. Absolutely loads of replayability with scaling difficulty. Also on Gamepass.

ZeroRanger

25% discount

My pick for best modern shmup. The less I say the better, it's got a little bit of Undertale, it's got a little bit of...Everything. An absolute love letter to the genre with an accessible continue feature. I adore this game, and am so shocked that it gets relatively little attention. If you say 10/10, this is the first game that comes to my mind.

Frostpunk

Grueling city builder/misery simulator. Great atmosphere with unique mechanics. Survive the cold. Feel hopeless. Love every second of it.

Demon's Tilt

50% discount

Videogame pinball, with an emphasis on game. Taking elements of bullet hell and overlaying them with a throwback to the classic Devil Crush. Plenty of objectives, sub tables and fun ways to score. Go for combos, destroy bosses, go bowling with flippers? It's weird and I love it a lot.

Fight'N Rage

75% discount

Classic Beat-em-up on steroids. Gorgeous and varied. So worth it at this price.

Streets of Rage 4

40% discount

This is what I said a few days ago in the "playing this week" thread.

I love arcade games, mostly shmups, racers, and light gun stuff. Despite this, I've never seen the appeal of beat-em-ups. They've always felt simplistic and dull - just coin eaters.

I feel that Streets of Rage 4 finally taught me the language of these games and I can appreciate them in a whole new way. This game is glorious. It's perfection. It's the Final Fantasy VII Remake of arcade games. Just wow.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana

70-% discount

Falcom's long-running Ys series has plenty of entries to choose from in this sale, but I think this is one of the better starting points (along with VIII, but that's the "new" style). This is a hack 'n slash with plenty of meat on its bones. Quite difficult. A little bit Metroid-y, a little bit Diablo-y. If nothing else, buy it for the music alone (2 minute mark, woah!)

Yoku's Island Express

80% discount

A pinball-themed metroidvania shouldn't work, but it does...And really well! It's cute as heck, has a lovely soundtrack, and is a good, chill time. One of the steeper discounts on this list so you've got little to lose checking it out. I really adored this one.

I picked up Trial or Fire on the Epic sale. I’ve been on vacation so no time to play yet. I’ve heard good things about Gordian Quest which is a part of the Steam sale. Too similar?

Our IT guy at work mentioned that they were going to do away with the subscription, but I don't see anything online about it. Is that true? I've been eyeing FF14 for some time now but won't bother with any subscription based game at this point.

This would be the first I've heard of it too, but I haven't actively played in about a year now.

You can play for free up to a level 60 character.

Yeah, the only thing I've heard is the free to play up to 60 on new accounts. (all the content up to but not including Shadowbringers)
They have another new expansion in the works with 2 more new classes and a new race. (really putting WoW content to shame)

I mean my wish list is filled with great deals on great games:

Spyro reignited
Destroy all Humans
Wasteland 3
Going Under
Disco Elysium
Phoenix Point
Solasta
Nioh

But I have so many to finish and so many great games are coming out all the time. That plus free epic games, humble, game pass and so on I think steam sales just no longer carry the weight of the one big time to get great cheap games.

That would be throwing money away. I dont think they're hurting for subscribers at all, the extremely broad free trial looks more about selling expansion packs and subs to people playing at the highest level. They recognize old content as something of a barrier to new players, so why not give it away and appear extremely generous?

New World is a non-subscription MMO coming out soon (disclaimer, I work with people who work on it, but its pretty darn good!)

Yeah, I might have just misunderstood and he was talking about the free trial to 60. I mean, that's better than WoW's 1-20 heavily restricted "free trial", but overall that just feels like "the first hit is free".

I have New World on my wish list, and I'll likely grab it when it releases.

I'm being very good at the moment since I've bought other stuff recently. I want Everspace 2 but I know I won't get to it for months. Two Point Hospital is a great deal but it's on Game Pass.

Quite an intersting list:

It really does continue to be an astonishing value for money, if the games available are up your street.

I finally picked up while True: learn() on Steam sale. Only 34% off but that’s enough for me. Gonna show it to my daughter to see if it sparks an interest in Machine Learning.
