Starfield - Spacerim-all

Surprised there wasn't a catch-all for this yet (unless I just can't find it?)

Anyway, not a whole lot of information as yet, other than the trailer, and a release date (11.11.22)

I have high hopes for this one, please dont let it be terrible!

I'm intrigued by this game. A single-player, space-faring RPG should be completely up my street.

However, my experiences with Bethesda games has been mixed. I quite enjoyed Fallout 3 and Skyrim, but I found myself running out of steam towards the end of both of them. Towards the end of Skyrim, I even did the alchemy/enchanting crafting loop, so that I could blast through the tail-end of the game. But despite this, I never finished Skyrim. I just found that the dungeons kept getting longer and longer, without necessarily becoming more interesting (Mzinchaleft was a good example of this). I also found the economy to be largely broken by mid-game. I was awash knee-deep in gold, jewelry, expensive armor and the like, but with nowhere to sell it. And the combat never quite jelled with me. Melee always felt a bit vague and floaty.

On balance, I probably enjoyed Fallout 3 more, It felt shorter and more focused. The VATS system was annoying though.

I'll be interested to see some better trailers for Starfield. As always, I'd like to know more about exactly what I'll be doing in the game. In particular, what the balance is between combat, exploration and other activities. I'm a little bored of 'endless combat' games, like Cyberpunk 2077. I'd love to be able to resolve more quests with conversation rather than just my fists.

Of course, all this will be moot if Microsoft decides not to release this on PS5...

From what it looks like so far, it will be Xbox Series X | S and PC only...

Bethesda single player games are all Xbox exclusive moving forward. And PC, of course.

WaPo had this video too, which has more info than the teaser:

Edit: Updated with the official vid. Sorry for the thread bump.

Do we know if that's "exclusive" or "timed exclusive"?

For me, this is a huge deal because it may be nudge I require to switch platforms. I can't think of any Playstation exclusive games that are attractive enough to keep me within their eco-system alone. I can't justify having two consoles, so...

It's releasing day one on Game Pass. Not sure how that helps Bethesda make lots of money, but I'm pretty happy to not have to spend 60 or 70 euros for day one access.

I guess it's unknown at this stage. Certainly on the 'poster' screens, it only mentions xbox and PC as platforms. This isn't like an Epic timed exclusive, or some third party exclusive for either side - MS own Bethesda now, so I'd bet that, other than, I think, one in-progress title that is actually a PS exlusive (was in the works when MS made the acquisition), they're going to start flaunting their 'exclusives' pretty much as soon as they can.

It is 100% not going to be on Playstation or Nintendo platforms unless they allow Game Pass.

Bethesda and Microsoft are locking Starfield and ES6 to Xbox consoles.

They are, however, putting Game Pass apps on TVs and an upcoming media stick thing, so streaming will be a thing if you'd rather do that than buy a Series S/X console.

But you will absolutely not be seeing Starfield or ES6 on a PS5.

And, yes, Microsoft has said they're honoring any existing contracts for games already tied to other systems. Those include Obsidian and Arkane games with exclusivity agreements with Sony or whoever.

I have three so I can't talk but I believe honestly that three consoles bought used is cheaper over their lifespan (say 5 years) than maintaining a PC rig for that same time.

And as for that comment about PS....Kratos is going to come rip you up if Alloy doesn't skewer you first. But on the bright side Nathan Drake will follow clues to your body years from now.

Yes that one gave me much more information. It will be third person game with shooting but probably trading, exploration, etc.

Yeah, we know nothing about what new wrinkles they're adding in and why Todd is so adamant that the tech didn't exist before for what they wanted to do with both Starfield and ES6. I, for one, hope they utilize more of the CPU for more simulation aspects as that is what sets them apart from so many others and makes the jank worth putting up with.

I get what breaking AAA console exclusivity news does to the brain, but remember that this year's State of Play hasn't happened yet and Sony has been (supposedly, per the buzz on the street) working on lining up exclusives, so chances are you've yet to hear much of what will be PS5-only in the coming years.

As for Starfield, my ears did perk up at "NASA meets Indiana Jones," then they lost me again when they said "Skyrim in space." BGS's games have just never done it for me. The fact that it comes out on Game Pass Day 1 is killer, however.

I think it's been made clear that this is exclusive to XBox and places where Game Pass exists. Unless Game Pass miraculously comes to Playstation one day, I wouldn't expect any future Bethesda titles there outside of Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo.

Same here. Bethesda's RPGs have never done much for me, so Skyrim in space isn't what I wanted to hear even if I expected it. Still, I will at least give it a shot because of Game Pass.

Written interview with Todd Howard.

Who knows how much we can actually read into this. Only time will tell.

I'm in the camp that plays Skyrim, or Morrowind, heavily modded, for at least a couple of hundred hours every year.

So, while I'm hoping for a solid base game right out the door, I'm begging for the "fountain of youth" that the modding community gives to Bethesda games. How accessible that is via Xbox store/gamepass, certainly for the more complex mods and frameworks, will remain to be seen.

I'm getting a kinda Firefly vibe from this game ( minus the western aesthetics). Visually it has a Star Wars look. 'Skyrim in space' sounds good, add in 'with mod support' and I'm all in

I’ve never had an Xbox.
I hate to say it, because I thought we were moving away from sclusy wars, but if ES6 were an Xbox sclusy, I’d march out and get an Xbox.

EDIT TO REMAIN ON-TOPIC: and Starfield looks pretty cool, too.

Do you have a PC? You don’t actually need an Xbox…

I do, but rarely get to use it because kids, whereas the console is in my bedroom.

How about an iPad/android tablet with a Bluetooth controller? Getting less ideal, but possible.

We do have an iPad! Haven't tried to pair a controller with it. I didn't know you could get GamePass on it, either.

You can't in Australia yet but it's meant to come later this year.

I'm so excited for Starfield. If it turns out to be a more open world Mass Effect I'll be so happy.

Ahhh ... yeah with wowtastic titles like ES6 and Starfield, I'd definitely want to experience them on a big TV with nice and fast hardware, rather than my iPad.

For me, the shorthand description of Starfield as "Skyrim in space" is a huge positive.

Xbox just announced a streaming stick and smart TV app. All you need is Game Pass to play this and whatever else on anything anywhere.

That's fair comment, farley3k.

But for me, the problem is that these exclusives feel like they're few and far between. Also, they are likely to be sequels or reboots, as they are to be new IP.

Uncharted 4 was 2016. Horizon Zero Dawn was 2017 (and now 2021, of course). God of War was 2018 (and now 2022). And I'll add The Spiderman (2018), which I really enjoyed.

But I can't remember anything AA or AAA being released in 2019. That said, last year - 2020 - was arguably a bumper year with Ghosts of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2, and Spiderman: Miles Morales.

I suppose that underpinning my feelings about Starfield is that it might turn out to be massively good. That it might turn out to be a single-player Star Citizen or something (albeit one that actually gets released and lives up to the hype and delivers on the Developer's promises).

Space Ghent or Boycott!

Tagging because the trailer is nebulous enough to interest me.

Skyrim in space, sign me up!

Neowin found three unlisted videos on Bethesda’s YouTube account. They are short vids about locations in the game. Just concept art though; no in-game stuff. Get ‘em before they’re pulled.

A fair amount of gameplay footage in the announcement and a direct coming June 11th with more.
