Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

Friendly’s has always had interesting ice cream flavors. I miss it; the ones in our area closed down 20 years ago or so. A nice meal of clam strips and fries, then a Monster Mash sundae… Oh, those were the days.

Wow, having major Friendly's flashbacks from...1981? Last time I lived in Northern Virginia. I vaguely recall they had the biggest sundae ever...

Every time we drive to New England we stop at one near where I went to college. So good.

They've been closing a lot of Friendly's's around here. Check in advance whether yours is still there.

The one near me was very suddenly shut down. So suddenly that the staff only found out when they went to start their shift and there was a sign on the door from management letting them know they no longer had a job.

The ones on the I-91 corridor in Western Mass still seem to be open, thankfully. I guess college towns can maintain the customer amounts and turnover rates they need.

There are quite a few Friendly's still here in the Central PA region, though I also know of a few that have closed down around here as well.

I went to the asian supermarket for the first time this week (I needed some specific Chinese cooking wine), and found mango and green tea ice cream mochis, and I'm having a hard time to stop eating them. So good!

That honey green tea is also excellent.

Mochi ice cream is a wonderful treat.

Trader Joe’s has those too.

Luckily they still make ice cream for retail locations, all of our Friendlys have been gone for some time now in NY.

Hoopla! Holy sh!t what a great app. Someone on a podcast recommended it so I’m passing it along:

Hoopla is an app to borrow digital books from your local library. I’ve used Libby for text and audio books for years so I’m not new to the best kept secret of borrowing books from my library.

BUT! Hoopla does comics!!! And they even do the ‘advanced’ view feature where it focuses/zooms on one panel at a time. So far, every comic series I’ve wanted to read is available from my library. It even has an AppleTV app for movies, but I haven’t tested that yet.

Highly recommend this app.

It took 35+ years, but I think I've finally conquered my fear of dogs.

I was bitten in the face, very close to my left eye, when I was 5, and ever since I've always been scared of them (I still see the bite marks every time I look in a mirror). And yet, this morning, when I saw a dog on its own going around, I managed to get close to it, grab its collar, find the owner, and stay with the dog as I waited for the owner to come pick it up. I had seen that dog multiple times (it's easily recognizable, it's missing one of it back legs), so I knew it wasn't a stray, and it didn't bark at me or anything when I got closer.

So, yay, not afraid of dogs anymore! I still won't get one, I'm happy with my cats.

That’s a big thing. And one thing to note is that as dog training has changed significantly in the last 30 years, it is far less likely you’ll encounter an aggressive dog than it was even 15 or 20 years ago. So it’s quite possible that you’ll be able to pet more puppers as you go through life.

As of next Tuesday I fulfill a lifelong dream of working on spacecraft that will be going to the moon. Starting a new job at a company that is making autonomous lunar landers. So daggum stoked! Very appropriate considering a pic of Jim Lovell has been my avatar for well over a decade now.

Godspeed! I recommend watching the Discovery Docu-series "When We Left Earth" to get yourself even more pumped.

I'll add that to the list. I've been re-watching "From the Earth to the Moon" recently. The episode "Spider", which is about the Grumman engineering team behind the Lunar Module, is what made me want to become and engineer in the first place.

Moonranger? I wish you all the best! NASA and it’s contractors form a great community. You’ll love it.

I'll be at Astrobotic (another CMU spinoff) working on their landers. I'll be starting just in time for their first mission, Peregrine Mission 1, later this year: https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/nmc/spac...

Awesome!
BTW, I worked for NSSDC as a sysadmin for about 3.5 years in the late 80’s. Goddard rules.

They did a fun arrangement of Lost Woods from Ocarina of Time on Colbert tonight.

I've got 200+ unique personal fart recordings on my phone and have shared them via text. I feel so immature, so 12 years old, and so accomplished at the same time.

*edit*
Now I have to convert them from amr or avr, whatever they are on my phone so I can share them more.

My pungent eminations must be recorded if not for stench, but for the auditory pleasantness of it all.

Post them up on freesound.org so the world can make use of your butt opera.

Ditto! I'm so glad you were first, because Amoebic was able to steal your jersey template for mine.
I'm also super happy that they were able to stream the creation on Twitch! Check it out!
