NFL 2021: The preseasoning

Carolina was never the smartest team in the league. But I never thought they were the dumbest because, well, Jags, pre-Baker Browns, J-E-T-S, etc. Now, they're in the running!

The Jets got rid of the dumb QB in question, but then spent the #2 overall pick on a QB with an anti-mask Karen of a mom in tow.

Does that represent a net gain or loss of stupidity for the Jets?

I had to google his Mom and saw her video on Disney and mask rules. What a moron..

Today's PFT hed: Robby Anderson sees a new glow in Sam Darnold

Five bucks says it's sunburn.

I almost posted that.

He sees his aura.

Too funny

Sam Darnold cruising around Charlotte like:

Darnold was voted in training camp Most Likely to Get Lost and Wind Up in Spartanburg.

Meanwhile in New England, Cam has come up with a nickname for his probable successor: Mac n Cheese (aka Mâč Ń CHëëšë)

Saw a fun little nugget today; the Jets have three QBs on their roster, who have a combined total of zero passes in the NFL.

Can't have anyone that might challenge Wilson.

I'm sure not having any veterans in the QB room will go just fine...

Even the Jags have 32 career starts and 55 TDs between Minshew and Beat Hard.

MIke White is their most experienced QB? WTF?

And here I thought the Jets were about to turn a Browns-like corner. Guess not.

They are. Just like we turned in 1999

Oh, hey, the anti-dynasty rankings for 11-20 are out. There are links to the other sets in the story.

Lots of good stuff in the 11-20 range: the Niners and Raiders of the 2000s, the pre-Brady/Belichick Patriots and the Jags of the last 12 years and few others.

Entertaining stuff. Top 10 comes out Tuesday, which means there are 10 more NFL teams worse than the 2008-2020 Jags, as hard as that is to believe.

Like I said, I have t imagine the Bucs show up in it multiple time so not really 10 teams.

Hey, those Jags are #13, so a full 12 teams worse.

Also, please give a content warning before ever showing those awful helmets again.

Jags sign Laquon Treadwell, after he tried out at minicamps.

Imagine that. Having a marginal player actually try out and earn their way onto the 90 man roster. Apparently the Jags do know how to do that.

Don't open this box.

Laquon Treadwell making a 90 man roster is likely a new low for this thread.

His Twitter handle is @SuccessfulQuon

You can go ahead and unpin that tweet now, Laquon.

Well, Buffalo might be down a WR.

EDIT: Actually, this is a masterful job application for lead sports correspondent at OANN.

I'm missing context here.

Cole Beasley is Karen-ing as hard as any Karen has ever Karened, and is proudly running with the anti-vax MAH FREEDUM banner all over Twitter today.

Ah yes.

Well, it's your choice, brah.

Rookies question:

I've never understood why it's news when rookies sign their contracts this time of year. I mean if there's a holdout in a couple of months, maybe that's newsworthy? Or is it just a thing so that sites have news to post every day?

As far as that Cole Beasley rant is concerned, it's almost fine on its own, except that he's also against preferential treatment for vaccinated players? He's free to not get vaccinated, just like we're free to refuse entry based on health concerns.

I think it's one part vestigial from the pre-rookie cap days where signing on time was much less assured, and one part filling newspaper/blog space at a time when jack sh*t else is happening.

Another ranking, fwiw: Pro Football Focus' top 25 players under age 25.

The top 5:

1. LB Fred Warner, Niners
2. QB Lamar Jackson, Ravens
3. WR A.J. Brown, Titans
4. EDGE Nick Bosa, Niners
5. CB Jaire Alexander, Packers

Carolina DJ Moore didn't make PFF's recent list of top 32 WRs but made this one, which must mean all the good WRs in the league are old AF.

Also, I'm not sure how you rank players at any other position than QB at No 1. No shade on Warner -- he's fantastic. But he's not producing ~300+ yards of offense each Sunday.

And those 2 Louisville players on that top 5 list were on the same team and still couldn't get more than 8 wins. Bobby petrino really was checked out.

If you go by positional value, then yes, should only be a list of QB’s. But Fred Warner is a top-2 or top-3 linebacker in the league (I think he’s number 1 personally) so on a pure talent basis I think he definitely makes the case for number 1.

Was trying to make a case for DJ not being top-32 but when PFF has Cole Beasley at 23…… definitely an oversight. That said the top-15 are pretty stacked, and old

The only real drama when it comes to rookie draft signings was in regards to the Falcons and Julio Jones. Had they not been able to move him and his contract, they wouldn't have had the cap space to sign any of their picks.

Well that was an impressive INT to seal the win in the Spring League Championship.

Yeah I got caught watching it again...

Apparently the Ravens have prohibited media from videotaping Lamar throwing to receivers. Draw Play did a comic on it today.

I guess a couple weeks ago, the Ravens posted a video on social media of Lamar throwing a pass, and the pass had some serious wobble, and fans from other teams were making fun of it.

I mean, the fact that Lamar doesn't throw the tightest of spirals isn't exactly news. Peyton Manning got pretty far with some wobbly spirals.

The receiver caught Lamar's wobbly throw in that social media post, so, *shrug*.

Lamar Jackson gets more microscope treatment than just about any QB in the last 40 years. So I wouldn't blame the team if that was the reason for the ban. That said, it doesn't appear to be it.

The team is releasing a lot of footage on their official site of Lamar throwing and receivers catching, but they are closeups that don't give away data on schemes and tendencies. The justification for the ban was that they didn't want filming of an all 22, for instance, being used as preseason film study. Particularly given how different this offense is going to be this year from last, I can see wisdom in not letting every f*cking team in the league Bellichick the Ravens before the season begins.

Carl Nassib of the Raiders announces he is gay. I hope this works out better for him than I fear it could go.
