2021/22 Soccer Thread: It's Euro 2020 until it becomes 2021

Following the medical emergency involving Denmark’s player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET.

The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.

Unfortunately, it's not the first time I saw something like this live. Boy, it doesn't get any easier...
Fingers crossed all ends well.

Latest via danish TV is that he is awake and at the hospital.

Close call. "Missed" the collapse while driving to lunch with my son, tuned back in just in time for the horrible news and not knowing whether he was even alive.

ESPN and others talking about how Toby and Jan were longtike teammates of Eriksen at Tottenham and are supposed to play in just over an hour. Belgium's manager was asked about it and just said "We're here to do a job." Probably not his call, though he could force the issue.

Also, can we just go ahead and give the first place trophy to those EMTs?

Denmark v Finland to resume later tonite per report. That is a little shocking.

On one hand UEFA could have its head up its ass but I don't think the players would play if Eriksen isn't in good condition and likely to make a good recovery?

Reports he's stable are such a relief.

This is going to be a strange match...

Following the request made by players of both teams, UEFA has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland tonight at 20:30 CET (TBC).

The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half.

Man, I understand scheduling for the tournament is tight, but what a weird affair it could be. If I were a Finn, I'd feel like a total heel for scoring, or even fouling a Dane.

Oh man, I didn't realize they were restarting the match right this moment. I forgot about time zones and assumed it would be in 6 hours or so.

That's tough for the players.

Goal.... uh.... Finland?

That's Finland's first shot, and their first goal in a major tournament. Pohjanpalo's celebration was quite reasonably, uh... restrained.

That penalty is quadruple-ply soft.

EDIT: Now I just feel bad.

In other news, Russia had every right to decide not to take the knee.

I, however, will find GREAT joy in Lukaku scoring on them before the game was even 10 minutes old.

It must be incredibly hard for them to play right now.
But the result is not different from what I would have expected before.

THINGS YOU LOVE TO SEE

Finland has a 100% success rate in European play. 100% conversation rate, 100% win rate.

Quit now.

Of course there's an anti-vaxxer angle to the Eriksen incident. Why wouldn't there be? Why wouldn't those gormless, sh*theaded ghouls ever be honest about anything?

FYI: Eriksen has not had COVID, nor has he been vaccinated.

Crap, Cancelo has tested positive for Covid-19 and is out. This is a serious blow. My pessimism intensifies.

Didn't realize this meant they straight replaced him in the squad also for Diogo Dalot from the u21 team.

Definitely not ideal.

England are looking great. But with 10m left I still feel like Croatia can snatch a draw because that seems like what England would do.

England do seem a bit weak defensively, but they mask it well with the great attack potential and pressure they apply when the opposition is trying to construct anything.
I think I heard in a podcast that England never won their first game in a Euro. If that was true, not true anymore.

Crotia is doing better than I expected but it's clear it's going to take sometime for them to rebuild and reach the peak from the last world cup.

Solid performance by England if not spectacular. I think the heat at Wembley had quite an impact admittedly, but I don’t feel we were that weak defensively and Mings/Stone handled everything sent their way well. Walker had a few dodgy moments but nothing too serious.

Philips was excellent in midfield, definitely should be first choice if Henderson is still recovering. Nearly a perfect start from Foden but felt he was a little anonymous the rest of the game. Kane looks not quite 100% fit, Sterling looked sharp and took his goal well.

The advantage for England will be playing at Wembley & the atmosphere now they are up and running. The entire stadium is now singing ‘Three Lions’ and that’ll be the difference.

Giggling that apparently Judy Foudy was unable to comprehend how people were complaining of "the heat" at Wembley when it's like 82 (27C) in London today.

Played disc golf with TheWalt yesterday in 95 - 100F. We felt it was warm, although a bit better in the shade.
