Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding

I'm glad you're enjoying it!

I think the online portion of the game works well. As you build infrastructure that can help other people playing the game, and in turn they will help you. For me, some later projects were greatly assisted by random strangers online.

Quick heads up, this game is discounted on EGS and with their £10 voucher should come in at about £12 - the sale is on for another fortnight.

I'm just an hour in and have no clue whatsoever about what is going on.

Get used to that feeling.

I ended up picking this up last night. I'm also around the same hour or so in and it's confusing. However, the cutscenes are awesome and I don't mind that I'll be delivering stuff for the next few/many hours

I just picked this back up. I bought it awhile ago and played a little bit, maybe 5-8 hours and then got distracted by something else. I was listening through the backlog of the How did This get Played podcast and they were raving about it and it inspired me to pick it back up. I restarted and am only a couple hours in. I think I just starts chapter 2

As I recall, there is point in the game where everything opens up and I had a "a-ha!" moment. I cannot recall what hour of playtime it occurred, but I want to say it was longer than 8 hours.

Unless they have found some essential or amazing use for the touch pad, the touch pad should always open the map. So many times I want to see where to go and I’m just yelling like an a-hole.

This game can be frustrating. I’m just starting chapter 3, so I know I’m still early on, but it’s hard to tell the difference between when Kojima is being brilliant with the depth and incatricies of the systems and story or when’s he’s being annoyingly dense and obtuse.

Think I'm there at 6 hours in, linked 4 places and in the last 30 mins have had a load more options/info/orders thrown at me. Still enjoying it but no way has it really grabbed me, will stick with it.

I'm also not sure on BB as well, something really isn't sitting right and the initial explanation you get at about 5 hours really doesn't help.

Filthy enabler. I'm still very early (only just past the Prologue and into Chapter 1, but the game looks great and I'm very intrigued by whatever TF is going on.

I was carrying 99/120 of whatever weigh measurement the use. I tried to cross a river but ran out of endurance. I started watching everything I was carrying float down the river as I fell and tried to paddle to the shore. I managed to save everything but it was quite the panic moment. I have 3 areas linked, still no idea what the heck is going on, but still enjoying it!

I’m in chapter 3 and I hate the MULEs. Ive had zero fun with my encounters with them. I’ll probably push through because I heard they get easier to deal with, but it’s close to making me bounce off the game. It’s bizarre coming from a creator who has made one of the best stealth action game ever to have these encounters be so clunky and play so poorly.

EDIT. I played some more and got a little better at fighting them. Still don’t like it but it’s more tolerable. I hope there becomes more of a use for them than just giving you something to do while traversing

I did not fight MULEs all that often. At least not until later on. I tended to locate their parameter scanners and jump in and out so to trigger a ping which could be avoided. I believe there was a downtime thereafter. I think there was also an ability to bounce back a ping. One which I wasn't particularly successful with. Most often I'd make a beeline away from MULEs to break line of sight and/or depart their territory. Later, when engaging with them, I'd make liberal use of the Bola Gun, and toss heavier packages in their direction. I don't believe I ever killed a MULE. Still. Whichever way we cut it. MULEs are perhaps the least fun aspect. They do eventually become less of an issue, at least.

Well I cracked on with linking sites and am over half way across America but I haven't bothered building roads or doing many side quests. Onto chapter 4 I think and just run away from BT's if they are close, including story missions. Doing it this way there does not really seem much to it bizarrely.

I've realised (quite late) that storage is not available across sites so think that building roads is going to be quite a chore in collecting materials and managing power and then it always seem to rain every 5 minutes for me.

BB still creeps me out, is it supposed to be cute??

Roads actually make things a lot easier- just start out at Lake Knot City and build out from there, completing roads wherever the story missions push you. Material costs will go up as you build further out but the roads go by most of the shelters and make it easy to zip around making quick deliveries to stockpile more materials without having to worry about your batteries. The BT’s don’t really wander onto the roads either which makes traveling through storms a bit trivial.

I'm definitely back on this whenever the Directors Cut lands on PS5. I did enjoy it but got bogged down in far too many side deliveries. I should really push on & unlock the

Spoiler:

zip lines

that sounds like a lot of fun.

All done, felt very empty at the end and thought the story arc was too random, just didn't feel part of what I was doing.

So, anyone playing on the PS5?

The save import system is a thing of beauty!

I'm gonna grab the upgrade to the PS5 version. The extra delivery options like the bot, catapult etc look fun. The expanded combat options should at least give a bit more depth to the encounters with the Mule's, plus the dual sense is supposed to be put to brilliant use, with the triggers becoming harder to push down with the heavier a load that's on Sam's back. The extra areas, 60fps make the upgrade seem really worth while.

I've way too much games that are on rotation atm though but I will get around to this in the next month or so.

John Linneman's Digital Foundry went over the save export system from PS4 to PS5, what a mess. You need all your orders cleared before being able to transfer the save over to PS5. Puzzling indeed.

I am thinking about buying the upgrade, even though I finished and platinumed the game. I thought I'd install the game on my PS% and upload my save.

The save is not on the cloud.

I guess it was at a time I had two PS4s - one for the kids and one for me, and so I was switching the primary console often.

I still have my old PS4, but its stored away. Gotta decide if it's worth it to dig it out and get the saves off of it using a USB.

Ah I was thinking of the directors cut where you have to transport your save in game.

Yep talking about the Directors Cut too, like you say needing your orders cleared plus you have to actually transfer the save in game. Cumbersome to say the least.

Was Kojima dropping acid when he designed this game?

I started this last night after picking it up as a freebee from the Epic store. I don't even know what to say.

Daryl is floating around in the water and I'm supposed to revive him. I don't even know how he wound up like that.

I've been playing for the last week, since I needed a comfort game. I have up trying to get my old save, so I started up a new game with the Director's Cut (conveniently free for PS Plus Premium). There is still a lot of online activity, which particularly helps with the roads.

The trailer for the second one of these looked so nuts it intrigued me and I have downloaded the directors cut. I think I might love it? I am not sure how fun the BT encounters are and I am hoping there are ways to get through them simply that might unlock. I love the general pathing stuff and bonkers story and am looking forward to getting deeper into it.

The trailer got me to start my 4th playthrough, first with the director’s cut.

You never really reach the point where you can blast through BT areas and ignore them but you do eventually unlock stuff that sort of trivializes those encounters as long as you plan in advance.

Do yourself a favor and invest resources into building as many roads as you can.

aw, looks like the director’s cut has removed all the weird Monster energy drink branding in favor of a generic “Bridges” drink. I’ve never liked Monster but I thought its licensing in the game was so stupid it was funny. A little sad to see it go.

This game is super weird for me. I will pass.

It's super weird for everyone; that's kinda its thing.
