Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Smash-All

I just want to break crates with an oversized wrench and watch nuts & bolts whirlwind into my pocket. Does it have that?

You are in luck, my friend! It DOES!

I can state that my enjoyment of the LEGO games is mostly because R+C conditioned me to destroy everything to make the bolts come out.

I'm so excited for this. I'd never played a Ratchet game before the 2016 remake just a few months ago and always thought it was more down the Spyro end of the spectrum (no offense to Spyro, loved it as a kid and I'm probably gonna pick it up again with my kids very soon). I was pleasantly surprised to find it's a super fun and fast paced 3rd person shooter with heaps of great weapons and oh my god the nuts & bolts!!!

Not so excited for the price though. Last gen games would release at $69 in a few stores in Aus with the a MSRP/digital of $99. Now it's $109 in stores and $124 digital. Helps a bit with the decision to go as digital as I can this gen but has killed any chance for new release games I'm on the fence about like Returnal.

That same thing is what made me decide to go physical for this generation. R&C is 15 hours or so and with so many games in the world I know I wont play it again and again so buying it at $70 (us) and knowing I can sell it for even $30-40 lessens the sting a lot.

Got the kids into bed and my bum on the couch a few minutes before the timer hit 0 at 8pm. Then the timer reset for another 2 hours. Grrr!! Makes sense cos 10pm is midnight eastern in Oz and it's always been the unlock time but I was hoping the game gods were smiling on me. Didn't stop me from watching Wrath of Man to pass the time and then playing until 12:30 once it did unlock.

Great opening couple of hours. Already unlocked a heap of weapons and upgrades and dinged a bunch of trophies. I'm playing on Performance RT and it looks great, but without side by side comparisons I don't really see the ray tracing. The frame rate hitched a few times but nothing major, still might try straight Performance mode to see how that feels.

Haven't quite clicked with the half and full pull triggers yet. Most of the time I'm just straight full pulling.

Also feeling this pain

I was dumb and pre-ordered a physical copy. Amazon now reports my order's status as "delivery by 11pm tomorrow", which is just grand!

I am delighted to empirically confirm this fact.

Good lord, this game is unreasonably beautiful in motion.

The game looks so good it is nearly overwhelming.

I switched over to the 60 fps with ray tracing, and I didn't really notice the resolution change, but I did notice the frame rate improvement.

Raises hand, and yet I caved in and just downloaded it.

Only got through the cold open last night, but man the end of the opening... I know we've seen some snippets of that before but I had such a stupid grin on my face for that entire sequence. Pure fun. Assuming the game keeps it up this is going to be so good.

And yeah, what a gorgeous game. I'm playing on fidelity mode for my first playthrough. Assuming it has a new game+ (which R&C typically does) I'll probably play on Performance RT then. I love the 60fps feel but I want to see all the eye candy my first time through.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PS5 - Performance + Graphics - All Modes Tested!

This game is firing on all cylinders for me. I just did an event that was similar to the climatic event in the opening level, but this time I had more control. It was very impressive.

Did you go to the planet where you go after the phase quartz yet? The part where you

Spoiler:

smack a crystal and instantly phase into an entirely new world

left me slack-jawed for a moment. I have never seen something like that on anything remotely close to that scale.

If this is what we are getting at the very start of this generation, we're going to be seeing some truly wild stuff 3-4 years down the road.

I am also happy to report that I'm still regularly caught off guard by some of the cool stuff going on with the Dual Sense. The adaptive trigger functions that vary by weapon type are great, but it's been some of the more subtle stuff from haptic feedback that has really caught my attention. A few of my favorites have been the light thuds from walking on metal vs. grass, the click-clacks in time to Rivet's fingers when she is plucking away at a terminal keyboard, and the intense musical vibrations that emulate what you'd feel from the blaring music in a real club.

I just did the phase quartz level this evening. It reminded me of another level in another game that was cool (trying to be vague).

Clarifying something that confused me at first: unlocking costume pieces gets you buffs, but you do not need to wear the pieces in order to get them.

The only minor frustration is that I feel that the ammo is more scarce in this game, as compared to Ratchet & Clank (2016). That keeps me switching weapons, but it sometimes feels like it is punishing me for forgetting to buy more ammo when I am at a shop.

That's interesting. I haven't had that issue, but I have seen a few other people mention it. I just finished the 2016 remake again a few days before starting this, and I think the ammo balance feels pretty similar so far.

I'm the type of player to constantly use all of my different weapons, so perhaps it's a playstyle difference? When I'm out of ammo for one thing, I just switch to something else and keep blasting. I haven't purchased ammo at all yet, and I very rarely use my wrench to kill enemies because I want that sweet weapon xp.

On another note, once you get 5 golden bolts, make sure to play with the currency skins. I don't think hovering up hundreds of energy drinks will ever not be hilarious to me.

I unlocked the ability to have Ratchet wield a keyblade, and I haven't gone back.

I don't think it's related to how many you collect cos I got this ability with my 2nd golden bolt. Now I'm collecting shiny rubies.

Bit sad cos I feel like I'm getting close to the end now and I have so much fun playing in this world. Still got a few weapons left to buy though and a plenty of upgrades an collectibles for a 2nd playthrough. Probably gonna end up with my 2nd platinum.

I finished this up today, and spent a few hours in new game plus to get the last few trophies. What a wonderful experience.

I've pulled the platinum, but I want to max level all the weapons in the Challenge mode playthrough.

Did have a full on set of crashes this evening, though. Was on the 4th or 5th planet as Rivet, and was doing some story plot related dimensional shifting when the game seemed to freeze in mid-transition. Music still playing, and I could hear people shooting at me but nothing was happening. Tried to reload to last checkpoint which resulted in a black screen with music playing. ... Okaaaaay. Dropped out to the main console menu and tried to close the app. After 3 min of it stating it was attempting to close the app, I heard the console beep a couple of times, but nothing changed on the display. So, I then held down the power button for 10 seconds, and it beeped more but still no change. Eventually had to pull power!

Upon booting up, it went through the standard "you turned me off wrong, you JERK!" screens and then asked me to submit a crash report for the game (which I did). Note: this was AFTER installing the update released today - 1.001.003

I also got a crash today, after installing the update that was released today. It crashed back to the console menu immediately (not freezing, like you experienced), and it prompted me to send a crash report with a video. I was on the 4th planet, with Ratchet, just doing regular platforming stuff - nothing dimensionally. This is the first crash I've had in R&C (and, incidentally, the first I've had on the PS5 overall, I think?).

I am enjoying it but I do think the short length is good. It is starting to feel a bit old after the 4th or 5th planet. Find this! Oh no now we need to find something else! Rise repeat. When this trope happened in Uncharted at least everyone pointed it out and complained.

Sure, but this game is actually fun!

I'm enjoying Rift Apart, it still sticks tightly to the established R&C formula though so I personally don't get that feeling of freshness.

The guns are mostly a blast, the Enforcer packs the punch you'd expect from a shotgun, the Shatterbombs are brilliant for most situations especially groups with the splash damage. The Ricochet is satisfying with the projectile going from your enemy to mid air & back like a bouncy ball. Extra damage when you time your press of the R2 button for each subsequent time the projectile flies back down & hits of your foe. I'm not the biggest fan of Mr Fungi & the Negatron Collider as the continuous blast of energy is so short but maybe I just need to level the weapon up a fair bit more.

The rift points are merely predetermined spots littered about each planet that are basically grappling points with great looking visual effects. I did think this aspect would be a bit more freeform than this. The hugely impressive feat in Rift Apart happens on Blizar Prime. You hit these purple crystals that transport you to a completely new environment in a second or two & your transitioning back & forth to get through the various areas.

The story is a lot better than R&C 2016 but still not overly engaging. The characters are fun though, the planets feel more fleshed out with NPC's doing a variety of different tasks in each location but so far they don't feel as well designed as the last game.

I've still a long ways to go & what I've said probably sounds overly negative but it's an easy go to game for fun, mindlessly blast robots, bust crates & suck up those sweet bolts. The gadget's are pretty nifty too, those rocket boots being one of the highlights.

I was playing the other night with headphones and my wife asked why she could still hear lots of bing bong kind of noises. Turned off the controller sounds and she asked again. Turns out the haptics and rumble make all sorts of whimsical noises when you're in a quiet room. Had to turn vibration off and triggers to resistance only.

Finished! Glad I played it but glad it is over. They went to the well of lots of enemies coming out of rifts in waves a few to many times at the end. Occasionally they tried new things - like the flying parts but generally they just went for lots and lots of enemies swarming until you were out of ammo.

Like the story though and was very impressed with the visuals. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
