NFL 2021: The preseasoning

You'd think he made his position clear after his first Final Jeopardy.

I wonder if Option 2 involves firing the GM?

And Rodgers actually signing a new contract. Which supposedly was already considered and he didn't want to.

1. Involves an actual offer from another team worth considering or the GM also gets fired after the fact if it's a joke.

So ya I don't really see mini camps as the D-day of something has to happen.

I think the eventual outcome is either a new contract if this is just posturing for money all in disguise. Or the agreement to move on from each other after this season. I'm actually fine with either.

Jim Fassel died at age 71. Seems young, but he played football so I bet that played a role. As did being a head coach, I'm sure.

Just came across this Tweet which indicates he struggled with recovery from Covid-19. What an awful virus...

He didn't want to because the deal had "no security" (read: no guarantees) beyond 2021.

The offer needs to be a long-term contract that entrenches Rodgers as the starter going forward.

That's why what I had said earlier in the thread that Green Bay should do is, set a fair trade price, and give Rodgers permission to go find it. If he can't find a trade partner willing to offer fair value, then he can't complain.

Don't worry about finding the trade value though. Denver is waiting.

The next installment of FO's Anti-Dynasty rankings are out.

Come for the Mike Ditka-era Aints, stay for the Trent Baalke takedown.

Baalke was fired ... This negative era ended the first season Shanahan got a full season from a starting quarterback, while Baalke is deservedly out of the league, where he can't possibly hurt any more fran—wait, Jacksonville hired him to be general manager?

The pre-Brady Bucs are on here, as are the Chargers (twice!).

I was going to make an "and then Baalke was never heard from again" joke, but then...

And his first draft in town brought in two guys with pre-existing ACL injuries? Oh dear.

That feeling when you read an article and you see what you could swear are your own words being delivered back to you.

Is there a way to un-mobile that site so all the text isn't crammed into two inches?

Have I got a deal for you...

We're going to have a long summer, aren't we?

When's the next thing Rodgers can miss so the media can report on it.

Is there a team dinner? Movie night?

Milwaukee Bucs home game? He might not want to go to that though.

When are the Brewers due to host teams from the NL West? That might be telling.

As soon as they make the Stanley Cup and Giannis wins the Lombardi Trophy.

So the starting QB of my favorite team hasn't been vaxxed yet (he's air-quotes still evaluating the situation, acc to ESPN), has only half a couch in his Charlotte apartment and isn't concerned that former Jets teammate Robby Anderson blew off OTAs.

Carolina was never the smartest team in the league. But I never thought they were the dumbest because, well, Jags, pre-Baker Browns, J-E-T-S, etc. Now, they're in the running!

The Jets got rid of the dumb QB in question, but then spent the #2 overall pick on a QB with an anti-mask Karen of a mom in tow.

Does that represent a net gain or loss of stupidity for the Jets?

I don't know. The Texans and the Eagles are really proving their incompetent ups recently.

Montez Sweat says he isn't getting a vaccine because he hasn't gotten COVID and so he doesn't need to be treated for it yet. That kind of stupidity would be funny if it wasn't so dangerous.

Say what you will about Dan Campbell, but his entire coaching staff is vaccinated.

That credit goes to the NFL, not Campbell.

The NFL told teams that coaches who weren't vaccinated by June 7 would lose access to the practice field and other "restricted" areas.

Urban Meyer said that is what prompted Jaguars assistant coaches to get vaccinated, because apparently everything else in the world was insufficient to spur them to do so.

With Cam Newton absent with a minor hand injury, Patriots first team QB reps are being taken by... Jarrett Stidham. Apparently both Stidham and Brian Hoyer took more 11-on-11 work than Mac.

Pretty funny given how earlier today, people speculated that the Cam injury might "open the door" for Mac.

None of the other 1st round QBs seem to be that far down their team's pecking order.

Zach Wilson obviously taking 1st team reps after the Jets cleared the QB depth chart.

Lawrence is still in limited workouts in recovery from the labrum surgery, but he's QB1 as soon as he steps back on the field.

Both Lance and Fields took all the 2nd team work behind veterans that will likely enter the season as starters. Fields is above Nick Foles in the Bears chart.

Probably much ado about nothing, but I have little else to talk about on a June 10th. I already got my latest round of bashing the Packers over the Rodgers fiasco out of my system a couple days ago.

Maybe there's a thread around here about a video game you could spend time in instead?

If there's one thing clear over the last year, it's a large portion of people don't care about anything unless it impacts them directly.

I would say there's an entire wing of the political spectrum built around that, but that train would take us to Cleveland.

While you're there, I'll trade you that end of the political spectrum for Baker, OBJ, and a 2nd.

I accidentally scrolled too far and started reading comments on an article about this and was not surprised. In the actual article though, Mike Florio suggests something that makes me do a 180 and actually sympathize with Darnold here, who is being a good leader and at least stepping up and being vocal about something at least 15% of players are doing so we can direct the conversation at him.

Mike Florio wrote:

Darnold should start by talking to team doctors. And if that’s not good enough, he should talk to NFL doctors.

I'll definitely give credit where credit is due. These doctors have a pretty consistent track record.

So what you're saying is that team doctors will recommend that Darnold inject himself with bleach? I'd be OK with that.

P.S.: "Evaluating the situation" is the ultimate hold-onto-the-ball-too-long move. No wonder he takes so many sacks.

And speaking of Dopey Darnold, here's something interesting: The worst NFL quarterbacks for every type of throw via Doug Farrar of USA Today.

A taste:

Zero/One-step drop: Carson Wentz, Indianapolis Colts

Wentz’s fall from grace on the field in 2020 was one of the more… well, “remarkable” isn’t the right word, but it’s been a long time since we’ve seen a starting NFL quarterback fall off a cliff from one season to the next as Wentz did last season. There were all kinds of reasons for this — an injury-plagued offensive line and receiver corps among the most prominent — and Wentz didn’t help with his delayed reads and truly mindblowing (in a bad way) throws at times. Shorter throws from short drops are supposed to be easier concepts to get a quarterback into rhythm, but it wasn’t the case for Wentz, who was by far the NFL’s least efficient passer on throws with dropbacks of zero or one step. On such throws (157 dropbacks), Wentz completed 90 of 145 passes for 784 yards, 422 air yards, three touchdowns, five interceptions, and a passer rating of 68.9.

Denver’s Drew Lock was the second-least efficient on such throws, and he wound up with a passer rating of 75.6. Colts head coach Frank Reich is right to believe that he can turn Wentz around to a degree based on his history with the quarterback, but there is a LOT of work to do here.

Wentz shows up on this list a lot. He also was the worst at throws without pre-snap motion and with play action. Eagles QBs in general (Wentz and Hurts combined) were last in without the blitz, without pressure and in the pocket. They were also last in the league on Wednesdays, leap years, months ending in R and the car pool pickup line.

Other names on this list: Drew Lock (several categories), CAM (five-step drop), Matt Ryan (seven-step drop), Danny Dimes, Jared Goff and Darnold.

There's also a best-of list that's heavy on Rodgers and a couple of other guys you've probably heard of.

Did they hire on that team doctor from the Chargers?

Oh, I'm certainly not defending his decision making skills. I do think that when what's sounding like 40% of players are holding out on this, it's good to step up and put some names to the faces. Best case scenario, some of them actually get convinced and there's a downstream effect.

Outside of football that's not the case though, it means you decided ages ago and have closed your ears.
