A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

See you folks on the underside of the bridge.

f*cking social media... That magnetic thing has been making the rounds for a month or longer. It still hurts my brain to think that there are so many people that are this ignorant out there.

Osteopath. Technically a doctor, but mostly bullsh*t

The doctor (of osteopathic medicine) is also besties with Mike Lindell. He's guested on her podcast and she on Lindell's failed social media thingie FrankSpeech.

Scimandan did an episode of Tinfoil Tuesday this week addressing the arguments against vaccines. He tackled the magnetic argument, but the funny part was many of the videos and pictures people are using as evidence were using non-magnetic material like aluminum or a coin.

It's a banner day for stupid people when video of this exchange is beating out video of Rep. Louis Gohmert of Texas asking if the National Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management could do something to change the orbit of the moon or the orbit of the Earth around the Sun to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Good news Gohmert! We can launch you into space. Our calculations indicate that your colossal idiocy will surely influence the orbit of something. At the very least, you won’t be wasting oxygen here on our planet.

Democracies elect the "leaders" they deserve. Especially Texas.

Sounds like the beginning of an apocalypse movie. "In a world where we thought we could fix the planet by changing it's orbit. We were wrong, and now Jupiter is on a collision course with Saturn. Only one person can save us from disaster."

Maybe Gohmert read the Broken Earth series.

Nah, I get the feeling that reading isn't one of his hobbies.

Biden administration to buy 500 million Pfizer coronavirus vaccine doses to donate to the world

Confirming WaPo story: Biden administration bought and is donating 500 million Pfizer coronavirus vaccines to rest of world. Person familiar says 200 million doses will go out this year and 300 million across the first half of next year.

All doses will be distributed through Covax and donated to 92 lower income countries + African Union, according to source familiar with the plans.

WH Covid-19 coordinator Jeff Zients and his team negotiated the deal over the past four weeks.

Good, the Pfizer vaccine has been way more effective against the current variants then we had any right to hope but it's best to try and get it under control globally while that's still true.

Giving him lots of doubt benefits I feel like he's attempting very dry humor in a vain attempt to make the argument that we can't do anything about climate change because the sun and moon are causing it, not people. But yeah it's still stupid.

Yeah, no. That man opens his mouth and stupid comes out. This isn’t a one off or an isolated case. I firmly believe that he is 100% serious.

This is unequivocally good news.

Progressives: This is nice, but 1 billion does would have been better.
Centrists: Oh so Biden is just like Trump?!

So, uh, bad news about the site you took that image meme from.

The image may originally be from there, but Farley got it from imgur, where images originally posted to ifunny get reposted a lot but are generally shunned for having their watermark. Imgur has its own issues though.

I like Jon Stewart and I really wish he hadn't added gas to the conspiracy theories out there. He's certainly entitled to his opinion but seriously... WTF

Can't tell if he's doing a bit or has just been isolated for too long. In any case, educated people are actually questioning whether they were too hasty in dismissing the theory about the role the lab may have played in spreading the virus. A Top Virologist in China, at Center of a Pandemic Storm, Speaks Out. China's lack of transparency isn't helping.

Yeah. That sucked. The detached irony sucks. I’ve had this theory kicking around in my head for a while that the mid 2000s Comedy Central lineup being so irony poisoned (Stewart, Colbert, South Park) contributed to an insincere political discourse that partly led to Trump. This video isn’t helping disabuse me of that notion.

Nah it was a bit. It was actually pretty funny also. But we've gone so full stupid we can't have nice things anymore.

I rather have John Stewarts comedy than tip toe around what might hypothetically enable the right/conspiracies. They will find their confirmation bias and fuel regardless.

Can Stewart do his humor without the detached irony that says, “This is really serious” at the exact same time as it says, “There’s nothing we can do about this”?

That’s what I find unhelpful.

Back when I first found the Daily Show, I started watching through the archives. And it was weird. I would see something from 2003 and love it. I would see something from 1999 and hate the banal show of meanness. Eventually I started trying to find the time point when the whole tone and purpose of the show must have radically changed, and I found it. After 9/11/2001.

I have no idea if John Stewart is helpful right now or not, but I tend to give him lots of benefits of doubt.

This is an interesting take, but I respectfully disagree. I think Lee Atwater created the insincere political discourse in 1988 when he destroyed Gary Hart and Mike Dukakis. This absolute contempt for truth or policy is what led to trump. The withering comedic irony that bordered on Nihilism of the mid 00s was the best the liberals could come up with after 15 years of watching the Overton window surge to the right.

I understand the frustration, but any humor at all is helpful. Can Stewart convince Democrats to fix the filibuster? Or fix public education and critical thinking skills? Or fix the selfishness and cruelty of half of white people?

No one is fixing these problems, no matter what tone his humor takes.

And Israel just reversed course and has reinstated masks indoors as well.

I continue to be amazed that our species is still alive given how short our attention span is and our unwillingness to do simple things (wear a mask, get vaccinated) for the good of all.

Sydney goes into lockdown as well.

I somehow doubt the US has the appetite or ability to get the populous to cooperate in this way.

(CNN)Sydney will enter a hard two-week lockdown on Saturday night local time as authorities try to contain a fast-spreading outbreak of the highly infectious Delta coronavirus variant in Australia's largest city, the state leader said.
