Days Gone Catch-All

He does start off pretty unlikeable and bland, but I did find I warmed to him as the storyline unfolded. And I got pretty invested in the story towards the end when:

Spoiler:

the wife he’s been mourning for most of the game turns up alive and they have to rebuild their relationship and defeat the maniacal Big Bad.

I haven't played the game, but folks have consistently said he's a terrible main character. Just average and pointless outside of his relationship with Boozer.

I really wish these default, generic white guy protags would die in a fire. Thankfully it isn't quite as rife within the industry as it used to be.

And it isn't just because they're white, it's because they're bland with no personality or defining characteristics. At that point give the player the ability to make a character in the beginning and roll with it.

You are correct in that it is literally nothing to do with colour, not sure why you mention that.

It is all to do with how his character is defined and he does have personality/defining characteristics - but they are really annoying and rude/arrogant to almost all NPC's.

If it was an RPG then they would have to do a couple of backstories for different sexes and they made the decision not to do that, but I'm not bothered about that.

I bolded the statements that were meant to be tied together. I'm talking about white being the default skin color of so many lead characters.

The problem isn't just that they're almost always some white guy who probably looks quite a bit like Nathan Drake, it's that they're also generally really bland characters.

I don't know, maybe it's a well known (Western) game design thing to keep the main character kinda generic so folks don't feel too put off by them. I mention Western because Japanese games tend to have fairly wild characters for both main characters and NPCs.

Guess the character being typical (old school?) bland video game tough guy protagonist hasn't bugged me at all. It's certainly nice when the characters have a bit more character but been playing computer and video games since the late 70s. I don't recall characters having much personality until the early 2000's and even then was pretty basic (thinking Lara Croft). So maybe it doesn't phase me at all when the main characters don't break out of the classic mold.

But yeah if Deacon was grumbling or complaining all the time that would have gotten annoying. Glad they removed/toned it down that if that was initially the case.

Had my first real intense moment in the game.

There was a Nero camp on the map that was displayed. Came across a treehouse on the way so parked my bike and went on foot. The treehouse didn't really have anything but a few baseball bats laying around. So hoofed it by foot to the Nero camp. Only two zombies around which I took out. Then disabled the speakers and turned on the generator.

Little did I know there was another speaker at a guard post. So now that place is swarming with zombies. I quickly grabbed/used the health/stamina/focus shot and got out there, Problem was I was surrounded with no clear path back to my bike.

I snuck from cover to cover trying to take out zombies via stealth but kept getting discovered. My bat ended up breaking and had to take out two zombies with my knife. I managed to make it back to the treehouse and grabbed one of the bats I saw earlier which made me feel a bit more safe. Then using cover I got close enough to my bike to make a mad dash. Even though there were zombies around it was raining (thankfully) so was able to make it to the bike without them hearing me and got the hell out there.

That whole thing took me over 20 minutes from the moment I turned on the generator to escape on my bike. Was one of the best gaming moments I had in awhile.

Cool, had a few instances like that but few zombie's turned up so it was easy to clear them.

I'm trying my first horde, been killed several times already, I just cannot seem to get them clogged up in a narrow space so end up using the napalm far too quickly. Think I need to take much longer over this, but it is a story mission and won't allow me to save.

When you're taking on hordes in the early game, it really pays to invest in stamina and skills that let you break and run, especially if you get overwhelmed (dodges and rolls etc). When your weapons are relatively weak, you need to do a lot of kiting to pick them off 3 or 4 at a time. Mines help a lot too. The early molotovs aren't all that good, explosives are far better before you unlock the big guns.

Thanks for the tips, I'm trying to avoid YouTube vid walk thrus. Haven't run into any hordes yet...don't think that I'm ready for that yet.

That makes sense with focusing on the stamina upgrades for a bit. I haven't hit any hordes yet but can already see the need for a fair but of stamina as I'm winding up in melee combats a lot more than I expected. So far I did one of each (health/stamina/focus).

I upgraded nothing but stamina for a good while, didn't help with the hordes. I did get past the first story mission with a horde by checking a youtube video and glad I did. Saved me a lot of time.

Spoiler:

turns out one of the buildings had the entrance collapse behind you so gave you a great position to whittle down the horde. That's all I needed, the rest was straight forward

Finished this now, really enjoyed the story arc and gameplay, ended up doing all 3 horde story missions although they took some time. Everything is tied up now except a load of horde missions, did a couple and they were easier than the mission ones but the thought of spending time looking for growler and polystyrene wasn't enough to keep me in the game.
Very enjoyable though, highly recommended and I will be doing another playthrough in the future.

Just rolled the credits on the main story. Took me about 2 months, started playing on May 18th. Steam is showing 117 hours...I harvested a lot of wolves & deer and collected many plants

I loved the ending credits video.

Just 3 pages on this game?! I just picked it up on PC and am absolutely loving it. It's scratching the itch that State of Decay 2 failed at. State of Decay 1 was great. This one is a blast. Every fight, even on Normal, is tense. I have yet to take on a single horde. I'm just soaking up the post-apocalyptic Oregonian landscape.

The cut scenes are great. The acting is great. Maybe too much mumbling, but...

Man it really is great. I’ve finally upgraded to a PS5 and it is gorgeously smooth and optimised now. Might just fire up a New Game + with the mega napalm molotovs unlocked, natch.

Loved it, will definitely have a replay at some point. Never got on with the hordes though, only did a couple and they were a grind.

I’ve tried to play it three times and while I really enjoyed what I did play, for some reason it just didn’t stick and I wandered into other games at about the same point in the story.

The difficulty curve with the hordes is very steep at the start, but they’re mostly optional so you can unlock better weapons and come back to them. Once you have the big Molotovs and a few high-capacity automatic weapons they become a lot easier. Also pre-planning with traps can heavily even the odds.

IIRC there is a horde that is part of the main quest and you get loads of tips but even with loads of traps and pre-planning I found them tedious. There was a cave one which I thought was bugged as I did it in minutes but the couple in woodyards took me a long, long time and I didn't really enjoy them. Loved the game though.

Days Gone movie is in the works:

I just finished this game. There were definitely some issues with the main character being mostly unlikable, some repetitious quests and too much driving between quests with too little to do but on the whole, I enjoyed my time in the game. I was initially frustrated with not knowing much about what happened to the world but I ended up liking the slow drip of information. The game really grew on me but it took awhile--probably a good 6-8 hours in until it really clicked. I would totally play a sequel if they ever made it. Not necessarily a Day 1 purchase but a solid game in my opinion.

Can they just put the money into a sequel instead?

Really should play this. Free on PS+ a while back

This game has all my attention right now. Loving the freedom, the open world and the characters. Don't understand the mediocre reviews but then I felt the same way about Mad Max. Maybe this type of game just doesn't review well?

The release version was a little buggy and came out right after a bunch of other big open world games and zombie games. I think it was a case of reviewer fatigue. I also enjoyed Mad Max, fwiw.

Anyone have or is having the black screen and no response problem on pc when dying or restarting a checkpoint? Seems like a widespread issue and I haven’t found a fix for it yet. Happens on my pc but not my Steam Deck so must be a NVIDIA graphics card issue or something.

No. Not had that happen to me. I'm playing on laptop.

This is probably a rookie suggestion but in your NVIDIA settings is Days Gone set to use onboard graphics or the NVIDIA card?

Hmm. Let me look at that. Thank you.

Arise thread!

If you haven't played Days Gone, play it! It never made it on my radar when it came out. So far, I'm finding it better than RDR2. Main character is profoundly unlikeable, but I'm loving the rest of it.

Current contender for my GOTY in 2024 is a game released in... 2019.

Solid, solid game. I actually watched some of the cut scenes! Which is unprecedented for me! (Not all of them though... ain't no one got time for that).
