Hidden Gems of HBO Max

There's just too many movies. They should stop making movies so everybody can catch up.

Everytime I watch Band of Brothers, I see about 5 really good actors that I forgot were in this great show. I'd completely forgotten Simon Pegg was in it.

In my dreams, Spielberg and Hanks would go back and make a third series following the Patton armored units. Could you imagine the troop level view of all that stuff? Or maybe even take it from the Montgomery side if you want to show the Brits.

EDIT: Just got to the Jimmy Fallon cameo. Forgot about that, too.

Total side note, but there is a podcast called Dead Eyes where an actor who was hired for a small role in Band of Brothers was fired because Tom Hanks (reportedly) thought he had "dead eyes." It is worth a listen. It does lots of naval-gazing at times. But it can also be surprisingly touching.

It has been years since an episode of television destroyed me as much as the series finale of Mare of Easttown tonight.

Same. It was brutal. I can’t really remember the last show that surprised me (and shocked me) with its finale.

I really want to watch Mare based on all the critical response I've seen, but I also understand it's a dead kid show and I just don't know if I'm up for it. Is it more or less depressing than, say, Broadchurch?

I just finished it. It was excellent but dark dark dark. Very dark material. Worth watching, but be ready for darkness.

My wife and I watched The Conjuring 3 (it has a dumb subtitle I don't want to type) last night, and absolutely loved it. We adore the first two movies (and most of the Annabelles), so we were easy marks for this one, even if it was not directed by James Wan. Very enjoyable!

The real-life recordings they played over the first part of the end credits was way creepier than the most of the stuff from the movie.

I was trying to prevent my puppy from peeing on the floor, so I missed those.

My wife and I finished the first season of Hacks last night and loved every single episode. Very funny and very touching.

Over the Garden Wall is streamable in its entirety. I was going to post this in the animation thread but I found this thread first.

It’s less than two hours from start to finish. If you like weird yet high quality stories you must check this out. I’m halfway through the series and I haven’t watched it since it first aired on Cartoon Network.

This is damn near a masterpiece!

I just got confirmation that there will be a Harley Quinn season 3 via twitter because "Batman" was trending. Also "Batman" is trending because they were asked to remove a scene in season 3 that depicted...

Spoiler:

Batman going down on Catwoman

..."because heroes don't do that."

Also because Movies with Mikey made a video about it, I finally watched Birds of Prey : Harley Quinn and really enjoyed it. I had a similar tone to the animated series and was a really fun ride.

I also read an article that there will be comic series based off of the HBO animated show that will fill in what happens between the end of Season 2 and the start of Season 3 (apparently there will be a time jump).

Maybe heroes don’t, but true gentlemen do.

I'm reminded that this is the same DC that nixed a Kate Kane - Maggie Sawyer wedding because they claimed that members of the Bat Family weren't allowed to be happy.

Ummm, there are only two things Batman doesn't do: kill and use guns. He is a man of extreme determination and insane willpower. He WILL bring Catwoman to orgasm and he will use any tool in his utility belt to do so. And if his gadgets fail him his training will take over. He knows how to use all his muscles especially the one in his head.

A hero who doesn't is no hero of mine.

Doesn't every batmobile have guns on it?

The movie Batmobiles tend to. The animated Batmobiles not so much. I'm sure the comic books are all over the place. Batman's dislike of guns has been... inconsistent over the years. Don't look for too many universal rules regarding a character who's been iterated on over nearly a century.

It's not anything new on HBO, but I'm enjoying Silicon Valley, a ridiculous, nerdy, and raunchy comedy about tech billionaires, start-up companies, and software engineers. 30 minute episodes, so easy to binge - I watched season 1 (of 5) this week.

Also, I just happened to notice that Constantine, the 2005 Keanu Reeves movie about a supernatural detective, is on HBO Max, but only for a few more days - it's getting removed on June 30.

Thanks to a thread on Twitter last week, I finally got off my ass and watched The Lost Boys for the first time. a.) I love a movie or TV episode that spends its whole time working towards the final punchline and b.) Those Star Trek comics Corey Haim was covering up at the beginning might be worth more than the Superman comics he was putting in front of them.

One of my former coworkers appears in the background in that movie. It was shot in Santa Cruz.

I found out about them maybe halfway through season 3 and enjoyed the hell out of every episode.

It might not mean much to everyone, but one the consultants on the show is Dan Lyons, known back in the day (over a decade ago) for The Fake Diary of Steve Jobs. I remember it being hilarious, but I can't guarantee it has aged well.

"Murder Capital of the US," which I was blissfully unaware of all those times my family took me there back in the 80s and 90s.

Well that was mostly the string of serial killers from the early ‘70s through the early ‘80s. By the ‘90s, you were probably fine.

Best salt water taffy in the world's made on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

Santa Cruz Beach Board-walk.... in the warm Cal-i-for-nia sun

BOARDWALK!

I spent a chunk of the weekend watching all of the Peter Seller's Pink Panther movies that I vague remember watching chopped up on broadcast TV when I was a teenager. Heck, I don't even remember seeing the first two movies of the series.

Seller's is definitely a genius when it comes to physical comedy as well as portraying absolutely ludicrous characters with a sense of quiet dignity.

The movies mostly held up against the test of time. I say mostly because there was quite a bit of casual racism dropped around Clouseau's manservant Cato in the later movies as well as more than a bit of homophobia.

Double post from the trailer thread because HBO Max:

I want to be excited for this, but that trailer could just be a generic mob movie. I trust all involved to bring some nuance to the thing, it just doesn't showcase what made the show special. I also know that a slow meditation on psychology, violence, trauma, and family doesn't make for a good trailer. I am pumped regardless.
